LIFE, DEATH, AND CATHOLIC
MEDICAL QUESTIONS
(by Kevin O’Neil, CSsR & Peter Black, STD)
Question: I feel guilty about putting my mother
in a nursing home. Have I abandoned her?
Although many people today might encourage us
to live guilt-free lives, guilt is actually a morally
healthy response. Genuine guilt should arise
when we do not do what we ought to do or when
we have done something that is clearly wrong.
Caring for one’s aging and fragile parents is a
responsibility that is increasing as people live
longer and are assisted in doing so by advances
in medical technology. Accompanying longer
lives, however, is often poorer health. Frequently
family members judge that they do not believe
that they have the wherewithal to care
responsibly for their parents. As a result, they
seek a nursing facility where their parents may be
properly cared for in terms of their health in its
physical, psychological, and even spiritual
aspects. For example, nursing homes with a
trained staff that understand the needs of the
elderly may be of great assistance to a loved one.
The issue can be more complicated in cases
where parents (and others) will ask their children
to promise “never put me into a nursing home.”
As difficult as it is to refuse this request, neither
you nor your parent knows how much care will
be needed, and a promise in not fair to the family.
The best response would be to say, “We will look
after you as long as we possibly can, and we
would only consider a nursing home if your care
needs were greater than what we could handle or
if it were the only place where you could be
safely cared for.”
Sometimes guilt arises in situations raised in this
question because we have not had the best
relationship with a parent and perhaps regret and
feel guilt about things from our past. The best
way to respond in moments like these is to learn
from the past and move forward. We would fail
in our love for our parents only by entrusting
them to the care of others and then depriving
them of our love and affection. That would be
the worst form of abandonment.
THANK YOU
Dear Father Nick and Members,
We wish to thank you for the beautiful flowers
that you sent to my dear sister, Louise Nahra.
The flowers are beautiful and everyone that has
visited Louise today (Feb. 5th, her birthday) has
mentioned how beautiful they are. Thank you
again for the flowers; you made Louise’s day!

OUR CHOIR
I think we can all agree that our St. Paul’s
English Mass choir is truly excellent. They are
great singers and musicians! Last weekend we
met Lou Pannapinto, who recently moved to
Alma from Wheeling, W. Va., and he is an
organist!! Let us welcome him and go out of our
way to express appreciation to all members of
our fine choir. They give of their time and talent
to help us in our worship of God; we are blessed.
WITH SYMPATHY
We offer our prayers and condolences to the
family and friends of Joyce Swaynos,
St. William’s parishioner, who died last week.
May the angels lead you into Paradise;
may the martyrs come to welcome you.
Vida, Muerte, Y Preguntas Católicas, Medicas
Pregunta: Me siento culpable por poner a mi
madre en un asilo de ancianos. ¿La he
abandonado?
