While the readings this week come from the same three books, which are the Acts of the Apostles, the Book of Revelation, and the Gospel of John, they move to different chapters. In the first reading from the Acts of the Apostles, we go back to Chapter 15, for the theme of who is called to salvation in Christ Jesus. The main thought from these readings is the very difficult issue for the early church of who is called to salvation. Simply put, there were two sides. One group said that the message of Jesus Christ was only to the Jews, and only those who were law abiding Jews could become Christians. The other side said that God was calling all people to salvation, meaning that the Gentiles did not need to become Jews first. Eventually this dispute had to be decided by the apostles at what is called the Council of Jerusalem in chapter 15 of Acts, and they chose inclusion of the Gentiles. The reading from the Book of Revelation is the magnificent vision of the New Jerusalem, almost the very end of the book. It is an extremely important vision, especially with the line, “I saw no temple in the city for its temple is the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb.” The splendor of Jerusalem had always been the temple, but the temple had been destroyed by the Romans just a few years before the book of Revelation was written. The author is saying that the time of needing a temple is over. Jesus is the new temple. That is why the Church has never worked to rebuild the temple. The Gospel is from Chapter 14 of John. This is one of those passages not mentioned in the other three Gospels. Because John was written many years after the other three, the author left out things they mentioned and included things they did not mention. The things he chose to mention include this story of Jesus preparing the apostles for his Ascension. But it also included a very strong admonition to “do not let your hearts be troubled.” Jesus knows that there will be very difficult times for the early Church, and he wants them to strong and not afraid. Again all thee readings are filled with joy. The Gentiles are called to salvation, the new Jerusalem does not need a temple, and our hearts never need to be troubled. This is also the Sunday which is Easter for the Orthodox and Eastern Catholic Churches. Because they use a different way of figuring out when Easter is, our Easter is usually not on the same day. Easter is indeed a season of good and joyful news. Su amigo y servidor ~ Padre Jesús Camacho G. It is not easy to live in unity when we are so many and so different. We can easily fall into sectarianism, discrimination, intolerance and rejection. How can we live united with freedom and love in the midst of a plural environment? Jesus' disciples must be recognized, therefore, not for the absence of conflict, but of how they solve it with a desire for dialogue and mutual, docile welcoming of the Spirit, who remind all of us what our Master has taught us. Jesus Camacho Page 3 6th Sunday of Easter May 1, 2016 PICTURE DIRECTORY UPDATE Thanks to the parishioners who responded to have photographs taken for St. Mary’s pictorial directory.
