Mikulka Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 2, 2015 Page 4 The Pastor’s Desk Dear Friends, May the Lord give you peace! Pope Francis wrapped up a beautiful pastoral visit to South America a couple of weeks ago and soon he will be visiting the United States with stops in Washington, DC, Philadelphia and New York City. Wherever the Holy Father goes, he pleads for a Church “of the poor and for the poor.” He asks all of us to live more simply so we can share more with the poor. Many people will ask “how do I become poor, how do I scale back and live more simply?” In the July 2015 issue of St. Anthony Messenger, Sue Erschen offers some tips. I invite you to read these, pray about them and see how they might fit your own life. 5 Tips for ‘Becoming Poorer’ 1. A void being tempted by unsolicited advertising. The sole purpose of this advertising is to make us think we need things we do not. 2. Cancel subscriptions to magazines that breed envy and discontent by constantly encouraging us to update our wardrobe, remodel the house or try the latest electronics. 3. Delete or unsubscribe to emails that offer limited tie bargains for things we were never planning to buy. 4. When tempted to buy more, stop and think, “How blessed I am that I do not need any of this!” 5. Seek out some of the many inspiring books and articles of voluntary simplicity. St. Mary’s Prayer for Discipleship Blessed are You, Lord God of all creation, In Your goodness You have created us In Your mercy, You have redeemed us And in Your ever loving Wisdom You sustain us with Your Spirit. You have given us the gift of faith, the gift of the St. Mary’s community and the gift of Your call to be Your disciples. We beg you now for the gifts of: Enlightenment that through our PRAYER we may know your holy and true command; Discipleship that we may SERVE the needs of the community and not simply our own, and Gratitude that we may GIVE of ourselves for the good of all. May we discover what is ours to do and may we do good works each day for the sake of Your Kingdom. Amen. 5 Tips for ‘Giving More’ 1. Make a committed effort to expand your giving. 2. Take a look at how much you currently give. What percentage of your income are you giving to charity? 3. Keep in mind that scripture challenges us to give away 10% of our income. If you’re not there, or can’t realistically get there, how much can you increase your charitable giving? 4. Plan your giving. Pick out 5 to 10 organizations that truly touch your heart. These organizations will not only benefit from your money, they will also greatly benefit from your time—volunteer! 5. Try making a direct sacrifice by giving up some specific luxury and donating the cost of that luxury to a specific cause. All of this will make us better stewards and better disciples. Perhaps as you ponder these tips, you can pray the St. Mary’s Prayer for Discipleship found in the next column. Thanks for a great week and best wishes for a great one to come! HELP OUR SISTERS AND BROTHERS IN PERU E ach year in parishes throughout the United States people have the opportunity to hear about the world missions. On the weekend of August 15-16, Sister Doreen Glynn will speak at all the masses in behalf of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet who work with people who live in poverty and the margins of society in Peru. The Sisters of St. Joseph minister in schools, parishes, prisons and in poverty-stricken neighborhood communities in Peru. Sister Doreen served as a missionary in Peru and is currently the Justice Coordinator for the Sisters of St. Joseph in the Albany Province. She has been a longtime advocate for justice and the poor and knows well the needs of the people in Peru. Your prayers are requested for the Sisters of St. Joseph in Peru and your generosity will be greatly appreciated. Make a difference for Peru’s poor—More than 53 years ago, in response to Pope John XXIII’s call to religious communities of women to serve in Latin America, 15 Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet went to Peru where they established missions throughout the country. For all these years, young Peruvian women have joined the Sisters of St. Joseph and now serve in schools, parishes, prisons and in poverty-stricken neighborhood communities. Our parish will be offering child care for the members of our Christian Caregiving training classes. RICA El Rito de Iniciación Cristiana para Adultos (RICA) es el proceso en el cual los adultos se preparan para recibir los Sacramentos de Iniciación (Bautismo, Confirmación y 1ra Santa Comunión). RICA consiste de cuatro periodos de formación: Periodo del PreCatecumenado; Periodo del Catecumenado; Periodo de Purificación e Iluminación y el Periodo Post-bautismal de catequesis / Mistagogia.
