My Family is Holy Because...
Dear Friends,
My favorite family Christmas tradition is driving with the whole family and
looking at all the decorations people have put out. My family is holy because
we go to church and try not to miss it. If we are in an area we don’t know, we
still find a church. – Annika B.
Merry Christmas! Please continue to celebrate
the great season of Christmas. The season, although the
retailers would have you think it goes from Halloween
until 11:59pm on the twenty fifth of December, really
just began on Thursday. Depending on whom you ask,
the feast of Christmas continues until Epiphany (The
Twelve Days Of Christmas) or the Baptism of the Lord
(for the liturgical purists). Some even celebrate Christmas until Candlemas
Day (the Feast of the presentation of the Lord), which falls on February
second. I like to stick with the liturgical purists. However you look at it, we
have many more days to celebrate the birth of Christ and the presence of
Jesus in our lives.
My favorite family Christmas tradition is going to my grandpa’s house and
spending time with my family. My family is holy because we try to go to
Church every Sunday and we pray before meals. – Lawrence M.
My favorite family tradition is opening gifts at midnight on Christmas Eve.
My family is holy because before Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner we say
grace and what we are thankful for. – Trinity S.
My favorite family Christmas tradition is waking up in the middle of the
night to open presents. My family is holy because we go to church every
Sunday at 6:30pm and every time we go on the highway my dad makes the

As we commemorate the birth of Jesus, today we mark the Solemnity
of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. As we do so we have to thank
God for our families and the traditions we have around this great season.
Also we need to remember our own families’ call to holiness. Before their
break, I met with the junior high students of our school and asked them of
their family Christmas traditions, and the reason they think their families are
holy. Here are some of their answers… My favorite family Christmas tradition is when we all get together and sit in
a circle while my grandpa dresses up like Santa and we open presents. My
family is holy because we pray every day before eating and we thank God for
everything that we have. – Jessyka B.
My favorite family Christmas tradition is after being with my dad’s family, we
drive to Indiana the day after. My family is holy because we believe in God
and go to church. – Marcus M.
My favorite family Christmas tradition is waiting until midnight Christmas
morning to open presents with my dad then going to my mom’s and celebrating
Christmas with the rest of my family. I think my family is holy because we
all believe in God, and we try to attend church as much as we can. - CarlosV.

and tell what we are thankful for. My family is holy because we go to church,

ONE WORD AT A TIME...
EPIPHANY
CRY
Next week we will celebrate the Epiphany, also known as “Three Kings
Day.” Please be sure to take an envelope when you leave Church next
Sunday with the Epiphany Blessing. It is a tradition in the Catholic Church
to bless chalk at the Masses for the Epiphany and then use the blessed chalk
as a part of the blessing in one’s home in the New Year. Each envelope
contains a small piece of blessed chalk and instructions as to how to bless
the doorways in your home.
Infants cry.We all know it. In their vulnerability, they let us know
that they need nourishment or need to be held.We know that this
is true of the newborn Jesus. The Eternal Word made flesh shares
the human vulnerability of every other infant on earth. And this
infant vulnerability—their need and their smallness— draws us
close to them. We may grow up, but we never leave behind our
fundamental vulnerability. In different ways, we continue to
cry for sustenance, for mercy, for strength, for healing, and for
connection and communion. In our vulnerability, God draws
close to us, as Scripture says, with bands of love.When our deepest
needs and vulnerabilities prompt us to cry, the Lord draws us to
himself through sacramental signs and rituals. He hears our every
cry, and the sacraments of the Church tell us that this is true.

HOLY FAMILY SOCIETY BANNER HISTORY
Some time ago, the Holy Family Society banner was installed at the left of the
altar of St. John Berchmans after spending many years in the basement of the
convent.The banner was donated by the Holy Family Society in 1936.The society
was founded a couple of years before by Belgian priest, Father Philippe, who
was briefly associated with St. John Berchmans church as an assistant pastor. In
the mid-Thirties, the society had 300 members. The membership of the society
was made up exclusively of Belgian women in Chicago. The banner is a Flemish
tapestry handmade in Belgium and shipped here. At the top of the banner are the
words “H. Familie” which is Flemish and the abbreviation of “Heilige Familie.” In
English it means Holy Family. The words of Gent and Brugge are the names of
two major Flemish cities in Belgium. They were the hometowns of many of the
Belgian immigrants in Chicago before World War II. The society was officially
disbanded in 1959.
SAVE THE DATE! On Saturday, January 10th, after the
5pm Mass, you can head down to the Church Hall with the
whole family for salad, pasta, and meatballs! Tickets may
be purchased in the rectory during office hours, or after
any of the weekend Masses. Tickets are $8 for adults and
$6 for children, and beer, wine, and pop may be purchased
throughout the evening. Don’t miss this chance to get to
know the members of our parish at one of our most popular
events of the year!
New Year’s Masses
The Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God will
be celebrated beginning with the 5:00pm on
Wednesday, December 31st. Masses on Thursday,
January 1st will be in English at 9:45am and at
11:30am in Spanish.

Mi Familia es Sagrada Porque...
Queridos amigos,
la medianoche para abrir los regalos juntos. Creo que mi familia es sagrada porque
vamos a la iglesia todos los domingos. - Enrique R.
¡Feliz Navidad! Por favor, continúe celebrando
la gran temporada de Navidad. Esta temporada, aunque
los comerciantes les hacen pensar que comienza
desde Halloween hasta las 11:59pm, del veinticinco
de diciembre, realmente acaba de comenzar el jueves.
Dependiendo a quién le pregunte, la fiesta de Navidad
continúa hasta la Epifanía (Los doce días de Navidad) o
el Bautismo del Señor (para los casticistas litúrgicos). Algunos incluso celebran
la Navidad hasta el Día de la Candelaria (la fiesta de la Presentación del Señor),
que cae en el 2 de febrero. Estoy de acuerdo con los casticistas litúrgicos. Sin
embargo si usted se da cuenta, tenemos muchos días más para celebrar el
nacimiento de Cristo y la presencia de Jesús en nuestras vidas.

Al conmemorar el nacimiento de Jesús, marcamos hoy la Solemnidad
de la Sagrada Familia de Jesús, María y José. Mientras lo hacemos debemos
agradecer a Dios por nuestras familias y las tradiciones que tenemos en torno
a esta gran temporada. También necesitamos recordar nuestro propio llamado
familiar a la santidad. Antes del comienzo de vacaciones de Navidad, me reuní

LA EPIFANÍA DEL SEÑOR
LLORAR
La próxima semana celebraremos la Epifanía del Señor, también conocido
como el “Día de los Reyes.” Por favor, asegúrese de tomar un sobre al salir
de la Iglesia el próximo domingo con la Bendición de la Epifanía. Es una
tradición en la Iglesia Católica de bendecir la tiza en las Misas de la Epifanía
del Señor y después utilizar la tiza bendecida como parte de la bendición
en su hogar en el Año Nuevo. Cada sobre contiene un pedazo pequeño de
tiza bendecida e instrucciones en cuanto a cómo bendecir los umbrales en
su hogar.
Todos lo sabemos. Los niños lloran. En su vulnerabilidad, nos hacen
saber que necesitan comer o desean que los abracemos. Sabemos que
esto es verdad también para el Jesús recién nacido. La Palabra Eterna
hecha carne comparte la vulnerabilidad humana de cualquier otro
niño de la tierra. Y esta vulnerabilidad infantil —su dependencia
y su pequeñez— nos acerca a ellos. Podemos crecer pero nunca
dejamos atrás nuestra vulnerabilidad esencial. De modos diferentes,
continuamos llorando en busca de sustento, misericordia, fortaleza,
sanación, conexión y comunión. En nuestra vulnerabilidad, Dios se
acerca a nosotros, como dicen las Escrituras, con vendas de amor.
Cuando nuestras necesidades y vulnerabilidades más profundas
nos hacen llorar, el Señor nos acerca a él a través de signos y rituales
sacramentales. Él escucha todos nuestros llantos, y los sacramentos de
la Iglesia nos dicen que esto es verdad.

HISTORIA DEL ESTANDARTE DE LA SOCIEDAD DE
LA SAGRADA FAMILIA
Hace algún tiempo, el estandarte de la Sociedad de la Santa Familia fue
instalado a la izquierda del altar de San Juan Berchmans después de pasar
muchos años en el sótano del convento. El estandarte fue donado por la
Sociedad de la Sagrada Familia en 1936. La sociedad fue fundada un par
de años antes por un sacerdote belga, el padre Philippe, que fue asociado
brevemente con la iglesia de San Juan Berchmans como pastor auxiliar.
A mediados de los años treinta, la sociedad contaba con 300 miembros.

Another great year! We have
accomplished a great deal
during this year, with our biggest
accomplishments being the new
bathrooms in the parish hall and the
new floor in the Altgeld Gym. It has
taken a coordinated effort of our
entire community to accomplish
this much-needed work, but
we still need your support. In
order continue building on
this momentum of these
completed projects, we
must continue working
together. We have big
hopes and dreams for
2015 and we want each of
you to be part of our success.
As we continue to leave a legacy at
this great parish, we are grateful to
all who are helping us to accomplish
our goals with their generosity, their

The Feast of the Holy Family celebrates the human family unit,
as well as the ultimate family unit: Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. The
feast is usually celebrated on the Sunday after Christmas. The
Holy Family is the name given to the family unit of Jesus: The
Divine Son of God Jesus, his mother the Virgin Mary, and his
foster-father Joseph. We know very little about the life of the
Holy Family, but while the exact details of their day-to-day life
may be unknown, we can still learn a lot from the stories we do
have.
The Feast of the Holy Family is not just about the Holy Family, but
about our own families too. The main purpose of the Feast is to
present the Holy Family as the model for all Christian families, and
for domestic life in general. This feast has been promoted as a way
to counter the breakdown of the family unit.
Our family life becomes sanctified when we live the life of the
Church within our homes. This is called the “domestic church” or
the “church in miniature.” Just how does one live out the Church
in the family? The best way is by making Christ the center of family
and individual life.

Kolbe House, the Jail Ministry for the Archdiocese of Chicago,
invites you to a bilingual (Spanish and English) Mass at 3 p.m. on
Sunday, January 4, 2015, at Assumption B.V.M. Parish, 2434 South

anyone who is personally affected by incarceration, a victim of

DOMINGO, EL 4 DE ENERO
Kolbe House, el ministerio a las personas encarceladas de la
Arquidiócesis de Chicago, te invita a que participes en una misa
bilingüe (inglés--español) el domingo (el 4 de enero) a las 3:00
p.m. en la parroquia de La Asunción en 2434 sur de la California en
Chicago. Queremos contar con la participación de aquellas personas
que han sido afectadas de manera personal por la encarcelación,
que han sido víctimas de un crimen o a quien quiera participar
con nosotros en la oración. Si has estado en prisión o uno de tus
seres queridos está en la prisión, te pedimos que nos acompañes.
