A. (GEASSA) of Buenos Aires, Argentina, and BCEG International Co. Ltd. (BCEGI) of Beijing, China, signed an EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) contract for the design and construction of a 1.35GW installed capacity wind energy project at a 450 sq.km site at Gastre, Chubut Province, Argentina. The construction cost of the total project is expected to be in the region of US$3.5billion. GEASSA is a project company set up for the purpose of developing the project and BCEGI is a China State-owned super class construction company, in Beijing, China. The project adopts wind turbines manufactured in China with the latest-state-of-the art technology. The project is comprised of the 1.35 GW Wind Farm at Gastre, one 132KV transformer station, one 500KV transformer station and 295km of 500KV EHV transmission line, linking Gastre Wind Farm with the existing switching station at Piedra del Águila. BCEGI is assisting GEASSA in obtaining a project loan from a first Tier Bank of China, for the construction of the project. The Financial Adviser for GEASSA is Corporación Andina de Fomento (CAF). Ground breaking on the project is expected to be in December 2012 and the total construction period is 57 months. The project is divided into 9 phases. When the Phase I (150 MW) -which includes the 500KV transmission line- is completed in 27 months, electricity will commence to be dispatched. After completion, the Wind Farm will grow 300 MW per semester until reaching its final installed capacity of 1.35GW. On June 25, during the visit to Argentina of Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao, the Activation Contract for Phases I and II and the 500 KV transmission line was signed. GEASSA has already obtained approval from the Ente Nacional Regulador de la Electricidad (ENRE) to construct the 295km 500 KV transmission line and connection to the national Grid. 1 The project will spur development in Gastre Town, and due to the long-term presence of the Wind Farm, will bring development and business opportunity to the local residents.
