On discipleship. Discipleship is a derivative of the Latin word discipulus,i, which means student. A student is a person who learns a trade or craft
under the tutelage of a master. Learning is guaranteed when the student observes, listens, understands and obeys the master.
Another derived word from the Latin discipulus,i is discipline. Interestingly,
a student must be a person who has developed desirable discipline. With
discipline, a student learns well. Without discipline, a student does not
successfully attain his/her goal.
Another interesting fact is a lesson is also called at times as discipline (e.g.
Science as discipline, Mathematics as discipline, Arts as discipline).
Observing, listening and obeying are important aptitudes required of a student. I think these aptitudes (disciplines) involve the eyes, the ears, the mind
and the heart (also soul). In reality, it involves the whole being of a person. I
equate that with the Jewish practice of learning the Torah. As a young boy, a
Jew is already taught the practice of the Torah (Law and Prophets) by listening to the letters of Torah proclaimed in the synagogue, by observing their
elders live the Torah and by understanding and loving what they learn as they apply the Torah in their lives.
Jesus, a faithful Jew, showed how to live the Torah and challenged many to observe it more deeply
through discipleship. Discipleship, as Jesus modeled, is listening to God’s voice and obeying God’s will.
Listening to God’s voice may be easy. But obeying God’s will is quite challenging because it may
require leaving family, nation and wealth behind. It may also entail renouncing one’s own choices, aspirations
and beliefs.

I believe Mother Teresa, a disciple of mercy, is above all a model of obedience. She was a Loreto nun
and was teaching History to rich girls. She was in the cloister protected by the walls of the convent while there
was another reality outside the cloistered walls of the nuns’ convent. She saw Christ’s face in the sufferings
happening outside the cloister. She felt called to leave the cloister and care for Christ on the streets.
o0o
Mother Teresa is canonized saint today. To inspire us of her model of holiness, here is Mother Teresa’s
creed of love.
People are often unreasonable, illogical and self centered; Forgive them anyway.
If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives; Be kind anyway.
If you are successful, you will win some false friends and some true enemies; Succeed anyway.
If you are honest and frank, people may cheat you; Be honest and frank anyway.
What you spend years building, someone could destroy overnight; Build anyway.
If you find serenity and happiness, they may be jealous; Be happy anyway.
The good you do today, people will often forget tomorrow; Do good anyway.
Give the world the best you have, and it may never be enough; Give the world the best you've got anyway.
You see, in the final analysis, it is between you and your God; It was never between you and them anyway.
renunciemos a nuestras propias decisiones, aspiraciones y creencias.
