PASTOR’S Reflection
B
reaking Open the Word of
God
Dear brothers and sisters, we are now
in the last week of Advent and the
readings move from hope to fact; from
promises to fulfillment. Just a few days
away from the big celebration, today’s
Gospel announces: “This is how the
birth of Jesus came about.” The main
characters in this scene: primarily,
Mary, the Mother; but also Joseph, her
spouse, who found that, before they
lived together, Mary had conceived
“through the Holy Spirit.”
The mention of the Holy Spirit makes
it clear: God is present here. It is not a
demanding presence, for it happens in
the everyday, and at the same time
extraordinary, reality of a pregnant
woman, in whose womb life blossoms.
Despite the mundanity and humbleness
of this presence, God’s presence in our
lives is always awe-inspiring. Our
restlessness when faced with the
unexpected and mysterious, and which,
moreover, wipes away all our plans, the
“fear of God” we feel, takes on a
different meaning. The Word of God
shows this very clearly today when it
contrasts the attitude of Ahaz in
Isaiah’s prophesy, with that of Joseph,
in the Gospel reading where Matthew
presents the fulfillment of the same
prophesy.
The first kind of fear is displayed by
Ahaz, with plain dread. God wishes to
manifest Himself, but we, like Ahaz
did, seek and find excuses to avoid
Him, excuses that might even sound
righteous like “I will not tempt the
Lord”, but deep down the hide a
rejection to the closeness of God-withus. Rejection and excuses these which
are merely excuses to try and prevent
God’s plan, which moves forward in
spite of everything.
Jesus is about to be born. It is not just
a remembrance of what happened more
than two thousand years ago. Jesus
want to continue being born, becoming
God-with-us”, becoming close to many
who know nothing about Him. The
signs of His presence are everyday
things, yet extraordinary: life blooming,
water cleansing us, bread shared,
friendships were there were only
strangers before. Joseph models today a
preacher of justice for us. An example
of the way we need to respond to God’s
will of being born among us. First of
all, we should avoid acting like Ahaz,
finding excuses and placing obstacles,
ignoring the signs and preventing the
close presence of God. In the second
place, we need to be able, like Joseph,
of discovering the presence of God in
ordinary,
everyday
things
and
understand those dreams which speak
to us about trust, welcoming and
acceptance. This means being open to
hearing God, and willing to obey Him.
W
alking together like
brothers and sisters:
We continue this path in Advent,
coming closer to Christmas with a
clearer conscience of what Jesus’ birth
means to us. Some of us have already
made resolutions to change some life
attitudes, that we may free the way for
Baby Jesus to be born in our hearts.
We just lived two wonderful
celebrations: Our Lady of Guadalupe
last Monday and Simbang Gabi this
weekend.
Tomorrow Monday we host the
Advent Reconciliation Service, another
opportunity to reconcile with God, who
is always waiting for us in merciful
love, ready to forgive our sins and give
us His light so we can live lives of
service to others in fullness.
Brothers and sisters, let us continue
helping each other, and as a
community, to prepare a welcoming
place for Baby Jesus who comes to give
us life. This week we will celebrate
three Masses in preparation for
Christmas on Wednesday, Thursday
and Friday at 7pm. Please join us. Look
on page 9 for the schedule for
Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, And the
Solemnity of Mary next week.
Come Lord Jesus,
maranatha!

Perfect Happiness
—————Fr. Mario Rodriguez, MSpS—————
Fr. Felix was a man of inexhaustible hope, great priestly zeal and profound happiness. I think these three
qualities define who he was very clearly. I particularly like the last one: a man of happiness. It is very difficult to be
profoundly happy man or woman. We know how to live happiness as a façade, but to live it profoundly is very
difficult. I long to live it day after day, but it is not easy.
I think Fr. Felix was able to live his life that way because his happiness was deeply related to the cross and
prayer. The cross meant for him an opportunity to live intimately united to Jesus Christ and he was able to find the joy
of living all moments of suffering for Jesus; his life was a constant offering of love to his beloved. It seems to me that
Fr. Felix learned this on his knees, in prayer and contemplation of the crucified Christ he was able to find the value of
Happiness.
Today’s world shows many different paths to obtain happiness, but Felix understood that his path was his own
FAITH. The happiness of living IN, FOR and WITH GOD. Living in God each moment of his life. Living for God
through the total surrender of his life. Living with God each moment of his life helped him to find the SECRET OF
PERFECT HAPPINESS.
I would very much like to invite you to
live life more happily. Don’t ever grow tired of
being happy, and don’t look for reasons to be
sad. Don’t wish to live in depression, but in the
deep happiness that stems from realizing that
JESUS gives meaning to your life. LIVE
HAPPILY FOR YOUR SAKE AND THAT OF
OTHERS. Allow Jesus to be born in you.
hombre o una mujer profundamente alegre;

M
nos hablan de confianza, acogida y aceptación. Esto significa
estar abiertos a la escucha y dispuestos a la obediencia a Dios.
editando la Palabra
de Dios:
Queridos hermanos y hermanas,
ya estamos en la última semana
de Adviento y las Escrituras
pasan de las esperanzas a los
hechos, de las promesas, a los
cumplimientos.
7pm. Te esperamos.

diferentes a lo que estamos acostumbrados.

Vocation Awareness
Are you involved in your parish?
One of the ways you can help your
discernment process is to be actively
involved in your Parish and learn to love
the Sacred Liturgy.
“The Catholic Liturgy is extraordinarily
beautiful, and when it is reverently and
authentically celebrated, it cultivates
priestly vocations. Every priestly vocation
is centered on the Holy Eucharist, so when
young men are involved in the liturgical life
of the church, they experience a deeper
appreciation for the gift of the Eucharist.
Quite naturally, they begin to envision
themselves actually celebrating the sacred

seminary. They served as altar servers,
lectors, Eucharistic Ministers, sacristans
and youth directors. Some taught Sunday
school or RCIA and others visited the sick
or imprisoned. A man called to diocesan
priesthood normally finds himself attracted
to parish life. If you are not currently
involved in your parish, the liturgy is a
great place to start!”

Freed through Reconciliation
When we look at the door with the chains on
it, there is no way for us to enter. It seems
almost impossible. The ironic thing is that we’re
the ones responsible for the chains. Even
though we have put the chains on, we do not
know how to take them off again.
Lucky for us God doesn’t leave us here, out
in the cold. He has made a way for us to get rid
of the chains and get into the party.
It is called the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
What it is: The Lord calls us to Himself and
invites us to have a share in His grace, which
we receive through our Baptism. The grace
that we receive helps us to do the good and to
avoid evil. Though Christ won for us eternal
life, we still live with the inclination to sin
(known as concupiscence). This struggle is
part of the life of every Christian. St. Peter
shows us an example of this re-conversion.
During the Lord’s Passion. Members of the
crowd identified Peter as Jesus’ follower and
friend. After witnessing the torture of Jesus and
fearing for his own life, Peter denies his
affiliation with Jesus—denying his belief in
Christ. After the Resurrection, Jesus returns to
the twelve apostles and privately speaks with
Peter. Jesus asks Peter if he loves Him three
times. Peter affirms his love for the Lord and
Christ instructs Peter on how he is to then lead
his life—by tending the flock that Christ has
called to Himself. This call from the Lord holds
the implication of a repaired relationship and a
renewed commitment to the will of the Lord.
When we act without regard to the laws and
statutes of the Natural Law, which governs us
all, we are acting contrary to the will of the
Father, the decrees of Christ, and
consequently against the rest of the mystical
Body of Christ.
Typology
LifeTeen
We call this sin. Sin is essentially “an
offense against God, a rupture of
communion with Him. At the same time
it damages communion with the
Church.” Because of this dual offense,
it is fitting that Christ provides, through
the Church, a sacramental method of
reparation for sin. God alone forgives
the sin of man.
How it’s done: The Sacrament of
Reconciliation, like all other
sacraments, requires several things to take
place in order for the effects of the sacrament
to take place. It has also gone through many
stylistic changes throughout the centuries, as
have all of the sacraments. For the sacrament
to take place, the sinner must willingly come
forward and desire to make amends with the
Lord and with the community—the mystical
Body of Christ. He must truly be sorry for his
sin and orally confess his sins. Contrition is
needed. The soul must experience sorrow for
the offense against the Lord and desire to
resolve not to sin again. This renewed love for
God and the despising of the sin specifically
because it offends the Lord, is known as
“perfect” contrition.
The two types of particular sin (the
individual’s own sins as opposed to Original
Sin) are mortal and venial. Aquinas speaks of
sin as a “sickness of the soul.” A venial sin is a
sickness that does not directly threaten the life
of the individual—the ultimate end of the soul.
A person that dies with a venial sin on their
soul is able to attain salvation.
The second type of sin is called mortal. It is
the sickness of the soul that leads directly to
the “death” of the individual’s soul. It separates
the soul from the promise of eternal life. The
Sacrament of Reconciliation is particularly
important in the forgiveness of mortal sins;
Therefore, during the sacrament, words and
the intent are the matter of the sacrament—
that thing that needs to be present as the
substance of the sacrament. In the case of
Confession, the substance is the words and
the remorse—the confession. The confession
of mortal sins must be confessed in both kind
and number. After mortal sins are confessed to
the priest, the representative of Christ and the
Church who holds the same apostolic authority
given to the apostles, the sinner’s venial sins
are to be confessed.
Once all of the sins the individual can recall
are confessed, the priest then may offer some
pastoral guidance before assigning a penance
and giving the absolution. A penance is what
we do to make amends for the spiritual wrong
that we have committed. The priest then gives
the absolution by saying the words “I absolve
you in the name of the Father, and of the Son,
and of the Holy Spirit” (ego te absolvo). The
Sacrament of Reconciliation does exactly what
it implies—it reconciles us with the Lord; it
heals our relationship with God and with His
Church.

Faith Formation opportunities for Adults:
Women’s Fellowship is on Christmas Break! We
would like to wish our fellow parishioners a Merry
Christmas and Happy New Year. We will be back on
Tuesday January 10th 2017 at 10:00 am in the Fellowship
Hall with The “Book of Revelation chapters 6 and 7!”
Bible Study
We are on Christmas break for the rest of
December. Merry Christmas! We return January
3rd with the Walking Towards Eternity series.
Come pray the Rosary for Life with fellow parishioners
every Tuesday at noon. All are welcome. We meet by the
image of the Immaculate Conception.
Your Home Visitation/Grief Ministry Team now has the
lending library ready to go! We have been telling you
about this project for some time, and we are happy to
announce that you can now check out books on how to deal
with grief and loss and help your family cope with difficult
transitions in their lives. To check out a book, fill out the
card inside the front cover of the book you want, and put the
card in the holder provided.
We will continue to add to the library and provide this much
needed resource for you and your family. Be patient as the
project gets underway please. Of course, we will accept
donations of books on the topics of grief, loss, bereavement.
Please check out this new resource located in the
Fellowship Hall.
As always, we are here to serve you and your family
during times or grief/loss as well as homebound and
suffering.
(Joan Kluck/coordinator)
