BLESSED SACRAMENT CATHOLIC SCHOOL And, the 2016-2017 school year begins! Although the first day of school was on Monday, August 15th, the students' opportunity to meet their teachers was on Sunday, August 14th. There was so much energy and excite- ment with seeing familiar faces - although most of the students had seen each other many times at summer activities! The 8th graders sense that they are now in their last hurrah here as many have been at BSCS since K4! The new kindergarten families - especially the parents of the K3 students - smiled (with a few tears) as the look of "my little one is in K3" was evident on their faces. Regardless of the age of the children, parents ask, "Where has the time gone?" It is such an honor for BSCS to be part of the development - academic and spiritual - of these children. These children are truly blessed by the opportunity that is provided to them! This year, school began with the celebration of our first school Mass commemorating the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This year includes changes to the carline route. The new route does not allow left turns onto Morton Drive or Brennon Street; thus, the route from Savannah Highway is at Moore Drive (by John Wesley United Methodist Church) and around the loop to Saint Teresa Drive. Cars exit to the right when leaving BSCS carline (yet another no left turn). Please keep this in mind for arrival and dismissal. This year we have more little ones and extra time has been needed to help them out of the cars. To accommodate this, the morning carline now begins at 7:20 a.m. This extra 10 minutes should help! Our new school lunch program will begin on September 6th. Until then, students need to bring a lunch and drink from home. The school website (www.scbss.org) is updated daily, so that's a good way to keep informed. Our school Facebook page is www.facebook.com/ blessedsacramentschoolsc. Of course, you may always call (843-766-2128) or email ([email protected]). CHILD PROTECTION SERVICES Diocesan Office of Child Protection (843) 261-0430 Diocesan Victim Assistance Coordinator (843) 856-0748 RESPECT LIFE TODAY'S READINGS: Being pro-life is really all about the humility of which today's first reading and Gospel speak. Humility allows us to see each other and ourselves honestly, as neither more nor less than what we are. Because we see the worth of our own lives and those of our neighbors, we are not led by pride to either oppress or ignore those lives. Rather, humility leads us to serve those lives. Humility keeps us from being fooled by appearances, and led to pay more attention to those who are more rich, famous, or powerful. Instead, we respect and serve the small and lowly. We don't determine their value, and neither does the law. "When you have a reception, invite beggars and the crippled, the lame and the blind. You should be pleased that they cannot repay you, for you will be repaid in the resurrection of the just." Here, Jesus urges us to have "eschatological realism." We are to evaluate today's choices in the light of what will happen on the last day. This applies perfectly to our service of the unborn. Of anyone we can serve, they are the least able to repay us, or even to know of our efforts on their behalf. Doing the work of the pro-life movement is the most selfless of all kinds of love, for we are loving those who cannot love us back. Moreover, we are loving those whom today's psalm calls the forsaken. We are imitating God, "the father of orphans," who "gives a home to the forsaken and leads forth prisoners to prosperity."
