Please contact your student’s campus administrative
office, and they can assist with any questions on
requesting HISD transportation services should your
student meet eligibility requirements.
CAUTION WHEN CONSIDERING PRIVATE
BUSING OPTIONS
HISD is not affiliated with any private bus services, nor
does the district review or regulate them.
As such, parents who choose to use a private bus service
should thoroughly research any company they consider.
DO YOUR RESEARCH
WHEN CHOOSING PRIVATE BUSING
The U.S. Department of Transportation offers an easy
way to review company information, safety record,
inspection summary, and crash records.
Visit http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov and plug in the
company’s Department of Transportation number or
Company Name into the search field. The DOT number
should be located on the side of the bus. If parents have
trouble locating the number, they should ask the
company to provide it.
ü Keep in mind that some companies may do business
under a different name. The DOT number is the
most reliable way to research.
ü Beware, some companies may change their names to
hide lawsuits or accident records.
ü When in doubt about a company, be safe.
ü Any reluctance on the part of the company to
provide the DOT number, the Vehicle Identification
number, insurance information or driver history
should be a red flag.
LOOK FOR POTENTIAL PROBLEMS
Some private bus companies buy older buses that school
districts have taken off the road. Do a visual inspection
of the bus. You do not need to be a bus mechanic to spot
some potential problems.
ü Does it look well maintained?
ü Are all the safety mirrors, lights and stop sign
arm functional?
ü Are the tires properly inflated and have
visible tread?
ü Walk the inside of the bus. Are the seats frayed,
torn or coming loose from their bolts on the floor?
ü Are the emergency exits functional?
ü Is there a fire extinguisher located near the front
of the vehicle?

HISD no está afiliado a ningún servicio de transporte
privado, y no los evalúa ni los regula.

transporte en autobús de una compañía privada, deben
investigar detenidamente a todas las compañías que
consideren usar.
ANTES DE ELEGIR UNA COMPAÑÍA DE
TRANSPORTE, INVESTIGUE.

recurso de fácil acceso que permite informarse sobre la
compañía y ver su historial de seguridad, un resumen de
las inspecciones y datos sobre choques.
Visite http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov e ingrese en la barra
de búsqueda el nombre de la compañía o el número
asignado por DOT a la compañía, que debe estar pintado
en el exterior del autobús. Si no puede localizar el
número, pídaselo a la compañía.
ü Tenga presente que algunas compañías operan bajo
un nombre diferente. La mejor manera de hallar
información fiable es usando el número de DOT.
ü Cuidado; algunas compañías cambian de nombre para
ocultar demandas judiciales o informes de choques.
ü Si tiene dudas sobre una compañía, sea precavido.
ü Toda muestra de renuencia de la compañía a darle el
número de DOT, el número de identificación del
vehículo, información sobre la póliza de seguro o el
historial del conductor debe considerarse una señal
de advertencia.
DETERMINE SI HAY PROBLEMAS POTENCIALES
Algunas compañías de transporte privadas compran

de circulación. Inspeccione visualmente el autobús. No
es necesario ser mecánico de autobuses para identificar
problemas potenciales.
ü ¿Da la impresión de que se le hace mantenimiento?
ü ¿Funcionan correctamente los espejos de seguridad,
