ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI CATHOLIC CHURCH
WHITESBORO, TEXAS
“THE TIME WILL COME”
by Fr. Jeremy Myers
Mark 13:33-37
The great jazz musician Louis Armstrong is supposed to
have said, “Never mind creativity, man. Just give me a
deadline.” Like many of us, Armstrong understood that a
deadline isn’t necessarily the enemy. It is a friend.
Deadlines force us to focus our energies. With a deadline
we quit weaving all over the place, and instead we pick a
path to the finish. A deadline pulls us out of our
indecisiveness and forces the issue: Make a decision! All of
this is good; otherwise we’d be forever stuck in a multiplechoice world. The “deadline” surely speaks to all of us, from
the mother who knows food has to be on the table at a
certain time to the executive who knows a product has to be
on the market at a certain point in time. I am sure all of us
have experienced the deadline, whether we were the
student who postponed the term paper until the last week
before exams, or the hostess who put off cleaning the
house until the afternoon of the party. Like I said, we’ve all
had an experience of deadline fever—fierce, focused, and
frantic. But the deadline still is a blessing, simply because it
gets the job done. No more excuses; no more dallying; no
more Scarlett saying tomorrow is another day. With this
season of Advent that we begin today, we have another
example of a deadline. It isn’t necessarily the deadline
you’re thinking it might be, that is, Christmas. Instead, the
deadline that Advent is concerned about chiefly is that time
when Christ will come to us at the end of our lives. It is the
ultimate deadline, the one we try to push off as long as
possible, but the one that comes to all of us, great or small.
“The time will come” when Christ returns and asks us to
present to Him our good works. It is a certainty. As Jesus
says to His disciples in the gospel today, “Be watchful! Be
alert! You do not know when the Lord of the house is
coming, whether in the evening, or at midnight, or at
cockcrow, or in the morning. May he not come suddenly
and find you sleeping.” The Church in its wisdom knows
how we need a push in the right direction and how we try to
push to the back burner the things we should be doing now.
Graciously, it gives to us this season of Advent to jump-start
us. The Church reminds us that we have a deadline
looming in front of us, and it is a very important deadline—a
face-to-face encounter with our Maker. During these days
of Advent, we should realize the urgency of getting down to
brass tacks. Now is the time to make our lives what they
should be and not what they are. Now is the time to forgive
and forget, and not later when it looks like a better time.
Now is the time to feed the hungry and clothe the naked,
not later when we are sure of our own creature comforts.
Now is the time for us to decide what is really important in
life, and not later when all our time has run out. So, Louis
Armstrong may have been right. “Just give me a deadline.”
The Church agrees and puts the deadline squarely in front
of us. It says to us, “Don’t procrastinate any longer. Don’t
think up any more excuses. Don’t kid yourself into believing
you’ve got plenty of time to get the work done.” The plain
truth is that the clock is ticking right now and the deadline is
right around the corner.

FIRST SUNDAY
OF ADVENT (B)
An old spiritual
adage
says,
“Remember your
last end, and you
will never sin.” If
we
remember
that God has
prepared
an
eternity of joy for
us, how could we
ever turn our
backs on him?
Whatever
our
problems and crises, let us renew our hope that all
things will work together for good for those who love
the Lord. Let us watch and pray in order to be ready
when he calls us to eternal joy.
PRIMER DOMINGO DE ADVIENTO (B) Un viejo adagio
felicidad.
