2016March13 - St. Mary Catholic Church
Fifth Sunday of Lent
March 13, 2016
To the exiles in Babylon, Isaiah foretells a new
exodus, when the Lord will lead His people from
captivity to freedom. True freedom is rooted in
the person of Jesus, not in observance of the Law.
It is He who challenges us to examine our own
hearts before self-righteously judging others.

Joseph the Just
March 19: St. Joseph, Husband
of the Blessed Virgin Mary
He is never quoted in the scripture. He is always in the
background – where he seems quite content to remain –
and only comes center stage when there is trouble. Then
he suddenly disappears from the story altogether.
All we know about him is found in the one line from
Matthew’s Gospel: because Joseph was a “righteous man,”
he decided to divorce Mary discreetly so as not to shame
her.
Yet that one morsel of information tells us everything we
need to know. Joseph was a “righteous” man: a carpenter,
he knew what hard work was, he knew what it meant to
support a family, he knew how to keep a small business
going. He conducted his affairs with “righteousness” – that
is, with justice, integrity, and humility.
Joseph was a man of compassion and decency. When
Mary was discovered to be pregnant, he refused to expose
her to the full fury of the Law – which could have meant her
death. Instead, he put aside whatever anger and hurt he felt
and planned to “divorce her quietly.” Joseph was a man of
compassion.
As the story continues, Joseph was the loving provider
and fearless protector of his wife and child.
Although the traditional language of church dogma
qualifies his relationship with Jesus as that of “foster father,”
make no mistake: Jesus must have learned a great deal
about integrity and compassion from his dad. It is not hard
to imagine that many of Jesus’ teachings and stories in his
adult years were inspired in part by the lessons and
example of his carpenter father.
May we embrace the “righteousness” of Joseph the Just:
to be men and women of integrity and justice, of faithfulness
and trust. And may we be inspired by the example of his
compassion and decency, imitating his humility in putting
aside our own hurts and doubts, our fears and anxieties to
be loving spouses, protective parents, and rocks of stability
for our families.

Update
Last November, a long-time parishioner of St. Mary, Terry
Ianora, suffered a serious spinal cord injury in a fall. Terry
has dedicated her life to the pro-life movement, serving as
Director for over forty years of First Way, a crisis pregnancy
center in our community. She has been hospitalized for 3
months in Portland and will return home in mid March. Her
continuing recovery will be long, arduous, and expensive.
The family has many needs. We are seeking people to help
in Terry’s care. The needs are numerous and range from the
medical to the mundane, skilled and unskilled, paid and
volunteer. To offer assistance or seek more information,
please email: [email protected] or call Jan at 541-2285727. Financial contributions can be made to the Terry Ianora
Medical Donation Fund in person or by mail to any branch of
Umpqua Bank. Please join us in helping Terry who has given
so much to her church, her community, and the protection of
the unborn.

Juan 8:1-11
considerar nuestras propias faltas.
