Veronica Kuehn Office & Facilities Manager St. Charles Parish San Diego / Imperial Beach Page Two FROM THE PASTOR Weeds, wheat, and the last harvest. This is the theme of the gospel for this Sunday. We continue with the 13th chapter of Matthew’s Gospel in which Jesus continues to offer parables that at first glance seem like techniques in gardening but in reality have tremendous importance for our salvation. Last week we heard the parable of the sower who sowed seed on the path, rocky ground, among thorns, and finally in good soil. Today Jesus builds on that parable with another. He tells us that he himself has planted his faithful ones on this earth. These he calls the wheat. There are though, some who choose not be numbered among his faithful. These he calls children of the evil one and weeds. These are evildoers and those who cause others to sin. At the end of time, because of their choices, they are to be bundled up and thrown into everlasting fire at the coming of Christ. Let’s think on that for a moment. Who or what is an “evil-doer”? He is someone who sins without seeking forgiveness or pardon of God. Listed first among this group are those who cause others to sin. In here is some food for thought. Certainly we know that we must confess the sins we commit. But how often do we take responsibility for causing others to sin? Think on this. Have we enraged others on purpose? Have we caused or enabled others to over indulge in food, drink, or illicit drug use? Have we caused, encouraged, or participated with another to commit impure or uncharitable acts? Have we made another to participate in gossip, slander, or character assassination; to miss Mass or abandon the Faith? You see where I’m going with this? It’s important to remember that though we are responsible for our own actions, we can also be responsible in some measure for those of our neighbors. If we cause or encourage another to sin we must own up to that, ask God’s pardon, and try to remedy the damage we’ve caused. I don’t want to leave you feeling guilty and dreary though. So, here’s a good thought. Just as it’s possible to share the guilt of another’s sins, it is much more to our benefit to help another see the Truth and be saved. As we read in the Letter of St. James, “My brethren, if any among you strays from the truth and one turns him back, let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins.” Through the power of God even a little grace is enough to conquer sin and evil. Let us help one another to live lives pleasing to God. The reward for acting in accord with God’s will is to be with him forever in happiness and glory.
