Walk to School Day/ Día de Caminar a la Escuela- In order to
promote health, safety, physical activity and concern for the
environment, children and parents all over the world observe
International Walk a Child to School Day. This year Walk to School
Day is Wednesday, October 3, 2012. Con el fin de promover la
salud, la seguridad, la actividad física y la preocupación por el
medio ambiente, los niños/as y padres de todo el mundo observan
“Día Internacional de Caminar a la Escuela con su Hijo/a”. Este
año se llevara a cabo el miércoles, 3 de octubre del 2012.
Tips for Walking Safely
Make sure your children:
Know the safest and most direct route home. Walk on the sidewalk. If there is
no sidewalk and you have to walk on the road, face the traffic so that you can
see cars coming and keep as far from the roadway (as far away from the traffic)
as possible. Cross only at corners or marked crosswalks. (If there is a
crosswalk button, press the button and wait for the walk sign to indicate that it
is safe to cross.) Stop at the curb or edge of the road, look left, then right, and
then left again (left- right-left) before you step into the street. Keep looking for
cars while you are crossing. Walk, don’t run. This gives time for drivers to see
you before you enter the roadway. Wear bright colors at night.
Consejos de Seguridad al Caminar
Este seguro que su hijo:
Conozca la ruta más segura y directa para ir a casa. Camine en la
banqueta. Si no hay banqueta y tiene que caminar en la calle, hágalo
de frente al tráfico para que así pueda ver cuando viene algún carro y
se mantenga lo más lejos posible del tráfico. Cruce las calles
únicamente en las esquinas o en los cruceros peatonales. Si hay un
botón en el semáforo, presione el botón y espere a que le indique el
semáforo cuando sea seguro cruzar. Pare en las curvas o en la orilla
de la calle, voltee hacia el lado izquierdo, al derecho y después hacia
el lado izquierdo nuevamente (izquierdo-derecho-izquierdo) antes de
bajarse de la banqueta, y que mientras este cruzando se siga fijando
que no vengan carros. Camine, no corra, esto da tiempo para que los
conductores lo vean antes de bajarse de la banqueta. Vístanse con
colores brillantes en la noche.
Great California Shake Out- October 18, 2012/ Gran “Shake Out” de California- 8 de octubre del 2012All schools will be participating in The “Great California Shake Out”. Students and teachers will be
practicing procedures for earthquakes. The drill is part of a statewide event called the "Great California
Shake Out," which will be the largest earthquake drill to ever take place in the United States. Parents, it
is a good idea to practice with your children at home as well. Todas las escuelas van a participar en el
“Great California Shake Out”. Alumnos y maestros van a practicar como preparase en caso de un
terremoto. Esta práctica es parte de un evento llamado “Great California Shake Out”, el cual es la
práctica en preparación en caso de un terremoto mas grande de los Estados Unidos. También es
importante que practiquen con sus hijos en la casa .
SSC/ Concilio Escolar - School Site Council members meet on a monthly basis. The parents that are on
the School Site Council are Javier Alcantar, Eduardo Reyes, Rossy Diaz, Claudia Covarrubias and
Martha Carrasco.. The school personnel on School Site Council are Mrs. Duran Smith, Mrs. Perez, Mrs.
Reyes, Ms. Alexander and Mr. Acosta. El comité del Concilio Escolar tiene juntas mensuales. Los

Mid-Trimester Progress Report/ Reporte de Progreso de Medio Trimestre- Your child’s MidTrimester Progress Report will be going out the week of October 8. Please make sure to check your
child's folder or backpack. EI reporte de progreso del medio trimestre se mandará a casa la
semana del 8 de octubre. Revise el folder o la mochila de su hijo/a.
Monthly Parent Meetings/ Juntas de Padres Mensuales - On Tuesday, October 9, 9:00 a.m. we
will be having a Parent Meeting in the MPR. A free dress pass will be given to those students
who have a parent attend the meeting. The free dress pass will ONLY be valid on the date
specified on the pass. La junta de padres será el 9 de octubre a las 9:00 a.m. en el salón MultiUsos. Se les dará un pase de no usar uniforme a los alumnos que traigan a sus padres a la junta.

Red Ribbon Week/ Semana del Liston Rojo
The week of October 22th through the 26th students will be celebrating Red Ribbon Week. Students will learn
about making good decisions and saying NO to Drugs!!!/ La semana del 22 a 26 de octubre estaremos
celebrando la Semana del Listón Rojo. Alumnos aprenderán como tomar buenas decisiones y
como decir NO a Las drogas!!!
Perfect Attendance/ Asistencia Perfecta
Remember that Mrs. Duran Smith is giving out a monthly reward to one student who has perfect
attendance. Cada mes La Sra. Duran Smith le dará un premio a un estudiante que tenga asistencia
perfecta.
September Perfect Attendance Winner/ Ganador de Asistencia Perfecta Para el Mes de
Septiembre- Congratulations to Andrew Ugalde for being the perfect attendance winner for the
month of September. Felicidades a Andrew Ugalde por se el ganador de asistencia perfecta para el
mes de septiembre.
Absences/Ausencias- If your child is absent, please call the absence line number (714) 568-9617 to
notify the school of the absence. Remember it is important to get to school on time every day. Si su
niño/a va a faltar a la escuela usted deberá llamar a la escuela al teléfono (714) 568-9617 para
notificar a la línea de ausencias. Recuerden que es muy importante que lleguen a la escuela a
tiempo todos los días.
Being Respectful/ Ser Respetuoso- We would like to remind all students and parents to respect the
homes and properties in our neighborhood. Please do not walk on neighbors’ lawns or litter The school
wants all students and family members to be cautious. Queremos recordarles a todos los padres y
alumnos que por favor respeten las cosas y propiedades del vecindario. La escuela quiere que todos los
alumnos y miembros de la familia sean precavidos.
CELDT Test/ Exámenes de CELDT- Students will be taking the CELDT tests during the month

Accelerated Reader Class Winners/Clases Ganadoras del Programa Lectura Acelerada-We
would like to congratulate to the following classes for having the most points by grade level and
obtaining the grade level trophy 2 – Ms. Medina, 3– Ms. Jimenez, 4- Mrs. Pennett, 5– Ms. Jimeno.

Accelerated Reader/Reading Logs- In order to meet our School Goal on
the Academic Performance Index, we are asking our students to read at
home every day. We are using a program called Accelerated Reader to
help motivate our students. It is very important that students read every day
because:
 It helps students to value and love reading
 It helps student to develop a rich vocabulary.
 It helps student to read more fluently and with
automaticity.
The Accelerated Reader program is a computerized program that tests reading comprehension.
Students select books on their reading level, read independently or with a buddy, and take an
independent comprehension test on the computer. Each book is worth a certain number of
points based on its length and reading level. Students get a percentage of these points based on
how many of the test questions they get right. The program tracks their progress over the
course of the school year. About every 6 weeks the classes with the most points will display
the AR trophy & the names of the classes will be announced in the monthly newsletter.
Lectura Acelerada- Para que lleguemos a nuestra meta en el índice de aprovechamiento
académico del estado de California, necesitamos que nuestros alumnos lean todos los días. Los
estudiantes usan un programa llamado Lectura Acelerada. Es muy importante que lean todos
los días porque:
 Les ayuda a apreciar la lectura
 Les ayuda a desarrollar su vocabulario
 Les ayuda a leer con más fluidez y a leer
automáticamente.
Con el programa de Lectura Acelerada, todos los alumnos toman un
examen para identificar su nivel. Los alumnos leen libros a su nivel y
después toman un examen de comprensión en la computadora. Cada libro
tiene un cierto número de puntos basado en el nivel de lectura que sea el
libro. Los alumnos obtienen un porcentaje de estos puntos basado en
cuantas respuestas correctas obtengan en el examen. El programa registra
el progreso durante todo el año. Aproximadamente cada 6 semanas las
clases que obtengan mas puntos se les prestará un trofeo y el nombre de
las clases serán anunciadas en el boletín mensual de padres.
