27TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
October 5, 2014
"Come, let us kill him and acquire his
inheritance." The tenants in today's parable
murdered because of their greed. They had no
respect for either the servants or the son of
their landlord. Motivated only by their desire to own the
property they cultivated, they did whatever was necessary to
further their cause. But they were fools. They only thing they
inherited was a death sentence in return for their wickedness.
Greed can act like poison to an otherwise healthy mind. Instead
of allowing one to think clearly, an obsession with having
"more" can cloud a person's judgment. Certainly it won't always
lead to murder, but more often than not it leads to using people
for our own ends or dismissing those who cannot help us get
what we want. Treating others this way is never acceptable. It is
an offense to human dignity and to God who made us in his own
image. Greed can also have a blinding influence, preventing us
from seeing the blessings that surround us. When our focus is on
what we want instead of what we have, the tendency is to forget
that we have anything at all. The only thing we can see is that
which we don't yet possess.
Ultimately, greed makes us miserable. It fosters discontent for
our life and disrespect for the lives of others. It is certainly not a
fruit of the kingdom of God. Belonging to this heavenly realm
means living a life of generosity instead of greediness. It means
looking for ways to share what we have to improve the lives of
others instead of hoarding more to "improve" our own lives.
Jesus tells us that his kingdom belongs to those who produce its
fruit. May we root out the weed of greed and instead cultivate
generosity in the vineyard of our hearts.

CME BOWLING EVENT
Centro Mujeres de la Esperanza is sponsoring a bowling
event on Sunday, October 12, 2014, at Fiesta Lanes,
5850 Onix. Registration starts at 1:30 p.m.; the
tournament starts at 2:00 p.m. You can help CME by
forming a team of 5 players. All proceeds go to the
center which helps disadvantaged women move from
dependency to self-sufficiency, many are domestic
violence victims. There will be lots of door prizes and

la 1:30 p.m.; el torneo comienza a las 2:00 p.m. Usted
puede ayudar a CME formando un equipo de 5
jugadores. Todos los ingresos van al centro que ayuda a
las mujeres desfavorecidas a moverse de la
dependencia a la autosuficiencia, muchos son víctimas
de violencia doméstica. Habrá muchos premios y

¡Dios actúa y sigue actuando en nuestra historia;
desde siempre su presencia ha habitado entre
nosotros! Durante los cuatro domingos de
octubre estaremos reuniéndonos en torno a la
Eucaristía para escuchar el cómo Jesús pregona
la historia de la salvación. El Reino de Dios es el interrogante
que Jesús siempre plantea a los sumos sacerdotes de su tiempo y
nos lo sigue insinuando a nosotros con insistencia; su palabra es
siempre como arma de dos filos que nos obliga a elegir para
nuestro cambio de actitud.
En este caso, Dios es el dueño de la viña y se ven claramente dos
dimensiones en el Evangelio. La primera es ver cómo es nuestra
relación con Dios y la segunda el cómo actuamos en esta
sociedad con nosotros mismos y con los que nos rodean. ¿Qué
hará el dueño del viñedo? Con los mal agradecidos y prepotentes
que no confían en su amor. Con los que convierten a su esposa o
esposo en mero objeto de placer. Con los que arrinconamos a
nuestros ancianos porqué ya nos estorban. Con los enfermos en
casa que dejamos solos. Y por último, con los que hemos
matado a su Hijo. Gracias a Dios tenemos la Eucaristía que es la
ayuda que nos da el mismo Dios. Al recibir el cuerpo y la sangre
de Cristo poco a poco nos va transformando interiormente. Al
comulgar nos vamos Cristificando. Nos vamos transformando en
personas de bien. ¿Habías reflexionado en esto? ¿Qué podemos
hacer? Bueno, san Pablo nos dice que "No se inquieten por
nada; más bien, presenten en toda ocasión sus peticiones a
Dios". La inquietud debe ser siempre el no alejarnos de Dios.
¡Así permaneceremos en su vina!

PAX CHRISTI FILM SERIES
This month's film, Into the Abyss: A Tale of Death, a
Tale of Life. Through conversations with Texas
death-row inmate Michael Perry and with persons
affected by his crime, filmmaker Werner Herzog
explores the question of why people kill and why a state
kills. He describes the result as “a gaze into the abyss of
the human soul.” The film will be shown on Sunday,
October 12, at 3:00 p.m., at the Mother Teresa Center,
2400 East Yandell Drive. A discussion follows.

OCTOBER IS RESPECT LIFE MONTH
Thoughts from Our Pope: We are reminded this
“Respect Life Month” of the dignity of all life. Our
Pope Francis sums it up with clarity: “I have a dogmatic
certainty. God is in every person’s life. God is in
everyone’s life. Even if the life of a person has been a
disaster, even if it is destroyed by vices, drugs or
anything else – God is in this person’s life. You canyou must – try to seek God in every human life.” Pope
Francis Interview America Magazine, September, 2013.
We ought not to take the life of another human being.
Let us pray for an end to the death penalty.

OCTUBRE ES MES DE RESPETO POR LA VIDA
Pensamientos de nuestro Papa: Recordemos que este es
el “Mes de Respeto a la Vida”, y debemos respetar la
dignidad de toda la vida. El Papa Francisco nos habla
claramente así: “Tengo la certeza dogmática que Dios
está en la vida de cada persona. Dios está en la vida de
todos y todas, aunque esa vida sea un desastre, aunque
haya sido destruida por vicios, drogas o cualquier otra
razón. Dios está en la vida de esa persona. Hay que
tratar de encontrar a Dios en toda la vida Humana.”

la vida a otro ser humano. Oremos para que se ponga fin
a la pena de muerte.
