Affects more than 350,000 people in the United States.
Occurs equally in boys and girls, all races, ethnic groups,
socio-economic classes, and nationalities.
While the age of the mother can be a factor, 80% of
children with Down syndrome are born to parents under
the age of 35.
People with Down syndrome lead happy and fulfilling
lives socially, professionally and interpersonally.
Opportunities today have never been greater. They
include increased integration in schools, health care
systems, the work force, social and recreational activities.
With advances in medical technology individuals are
living longer than ever before. Average life expectancy is
55 years, but many live longer.
Parental love, nurturing, early intervention programs,
educational opportunities and community involvement
directly assist each individual in achieving their potential.
People with Down syndrome are CAPABLE,
VALUABLE, AND UNIQUE.

The Austin Women's Race is only a few weeks away. If you
have not registered, grab a teammate and get ready for the
most fun filled event around. If you have preregistered, look
for the pre-race email the first week of September.
The Women's Race is all about fun and adventure! The
course has been designed for beginners, but will be challenging for all participants with many fun and exciting surprises! The Women's Race is a team-based race.Twowoman teams run/hike and splash together over a course
full of fun special tests that will take between 1 - 2 hours to
complete. This is a great event for mother & daughters, sisters or friends to experience together.
Adult / Child Teams!
Women's Race will continue to grow the Adult & Child
teams. Children must be 16 or under to participate. Boys
are allowed to race with mom this year if they are 10 or under. The children will receive a reduced entry fee of $25.00.
Last year a 3 year old completed the race with her mom, so
grab that little girl and get ready to have some FUN!
Charity: And if that's not enough, the fact that you are helping a great cause - DSACT (Down Syndrome Association
of Central Texas) should double the size of that smile on
your face.
Volume 8, Issue 4
Page 3
There are contests for floats, costumes and the top fund raisers. Fundraise your way to Queen Bee status and perhaps a
top fundraiser award. Fundraiser awards are based on individual monies raised (not a team contest). The top fundraiser has
already raised in excess of $1,250 online for DSACT, so get
busy and join the cause!
The fundraising deadline is September 9, 2010 at 5pm. If you
are bringing personal checks or cash you can send an email
to us at [email protected] on September 9th with the
total and then bring the donations to packet pickup. Be sure to
have your donations in by this date to be counted towards the
fundraiser competition.
Run/Hike Section: The run/hike will be between 1 and 2 total miles. Expect plenty of fun and exciting mystery events
mixed in along the route!
Don't forget there is an awesome Kid's Adventure Zone for the
youngsters to create smiles of their own and we are working
on a rock climbing wall for the kids as well!
Water Section:
The water section is where you and your teammate can
really get creative! All teams must bring their own water
craft and PFDs (life jackets). Use your imagination and build
a really cool float for the contest, or bring something as simple as a kick board. You will only float a short distance
across a small pond...no paddles allowed, so strengthen up
those hands, arms, or legs if you are kicking!
Lastly we need volunteers. If you have family or friends coming out ask them to volunteer. They will get some great
schwag and a big smile of their own knowing they helped
make such a great event happen. Email us if you can volunteer.
The time to act is now! Grab a teammate, start fund raising
and get ready for this fun filled exciting event designed just for
women. Don't forget to start practicing that smile because we
guarantee that you will have one on display on race day.
See you in a few weeks!

12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Reunion Ranch.
What Is The Buddy Walk?
The Buddy Walk is a one-mile walk created by the National Down Syndrome Society in 1995 to
bring together a wide range of concerned individuals to reach out to friends, family and
coworkers to promote awareness and inclusion for people with Down syndrome and to raise
funds for local and national education, research and advocacy programs.
This year marks our 11th annual walk for the Down Syndrome Association of Central Texas
(DSACT). Throughout the month of October, National Down Syndrome Awareness Month, more
than 275 Buddy Walks will occur throughout the United State. It is one of the largest
celebrations for Down syndrome awareness in the nation. Participants help spread the message
of acceptance and inclusion for children and adults with Down syndrome – a message which will
last long after the Buddy Walk. Every step you take and each dollar you raise will help the Down
Syndrome Association of Central Texas provide the important services that enhance the quality
of life for individuals with Down syndrome and their families.
Anyone can participate in the Buddy Walk without special training. As we gather to celebrate the
gifts individuals with Down syndrome have given to our families and friends, we promote
acceptance and raise awareness of their potential, dreams and accomplishments! The day
promises entertainment and fun for everyone.
Form your Family or Corporate Team Today!
Buddy Walk makes “FUNdraising” enjoyable!
Last year, over 80 teams walked to support their loved ones with Down syndrome.
Together, these families and friends raised over $50,000 which was used to create
wonderful new programs for all ages!

explore such topics as using technology tools to “Enseñanza por Diseño;” Utilizando Juegos de Mesa, Juegos de Mesa

Enhance the Quality of life for Individuals with Down syndrome
Your efforts will allow us to increase the activities and programs which will enhance the quality
of life for individuals with Down syndrome throughout Central Texas. Last year, the top four
family teams raised over $ 10,000 and the top corporate teams raised over $ 3,500. This
money is applied directly to local programs and services.
You make a difference!
Why Form a Corporate Team?
Benefits for your Company & Employees
The Buddy Walk draws people together in a healthy activity for a worthy cause. Forming a
Buddy Walk Team is a great way to build morale, team spirit and a sense of camaraderie
among employees, as well as increase your visibility in the community. It sends a strong signal
that you and your employees care about the health and welfare of your neighbors. In short, it’s
good for public and community relations! Team participation costs your company very little
since funds are raised through individual donations gathered by team members from coworkers, families and friends.
Benefits for Individuals with Down syndrome
Corporate teams are often able to generate a far larger amount of money for Down syndrome
services and research than would otherwise be possible through a direct corporate donation. Of
course, the best reason for your team to participate in The Buddy Walk for the Down Syndrome
Association of Central Texas is the satisfaction you and your teammates will have from knowing

Raise Awareness
Down syndrome is a genetic condition that occurs in
approximately one in every 733 live births, affecting
more than 350,000 people in the United States alone.
Recent advances in the understanding of Down
syndrome have resulted in dramatic improvements in
life span, and individuals with Down syndrome are
becoming active participants in our communities.
Forming a Buddy Walk team helps us raise awareness
about Down syndrome and the contributions these
individuals make to our communities!
