We recall another letter in which Paul describes his imprisonments and beatings: “Five times at the hands of the Jews I received forty lashes minus one. Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was stoned, three times I was shipwrecked, I passed a night and a day on the deep” (2 Corinthians 11:24–25). Far from being bitter about all this abuse, Paul “boasts” in the cross that Jesus has allowed him to share. Those of us who have a scar usually have a memorable story about what caused the injury. Paul’s scars remind him of his life in Christ. With the marks of Jesus on his body and the love of Christ in his heart, Paul is never alone. Clarification of S.C.A.P. There seems to be some confusion regarding the weekends on which a SCAP service will be conducted in the place of the usual Mass. The weekend schedule of Masses is not changing with the SCAP service; what is being changed is that on the weekends when one of the parish priests is away on his annual vacation, a Sunday Celebration in the Absence of a Priest will be held at the designated times since there will not be a priest available to celebrate Mass. Mass will be celebrated as usual at the other times on the weekend. The designated Sundays on which the SCAP service will be conducted are indicated below. The times / church in which they will take place is stated also. Please read through the Catechesis carefully so that you will understand fully the necessity for the SCAP service. A full version of the catechesis is available at www.gscparish.org. “From the day of Pentecost, after the coming of the Holy Spirit, the Church of Christ has always faithfully come together to celebrate the paschal mystery on the day called “the Lord’s Day,” in memory of the Lord’s resurrection. In the Sunday assembly the Church reads in all the Scriptures those things that concern Christ1 and celebrates the Eucharist as the memorial of the death and resurrection of the Lord until he comes. But, a complete celebration of the Lord’s Day is not always possible. There have been and still are many of the faithful for whom “because of the lack of a priest or some other serious reason, participation in the Eucharistic celebration is not possible.”2 PARISH OFFICES CLOSED FOR INDEPENDENCE DAY Just a reminder that the parish offices will be closed on Monday, July 4, and that Masses will be celebrated as per the holiday schedule. We thank God for the freedoms that we enjoy in this great country and pray that God will continue to watch over us and protect us. We also pray that our Blessed Mother who is the Patroness of the United States under the title of her Immaculate Conception, will continually advocate for our needs. Please pray for all those in the military, especially those actively serving. For many years, the diocese of Fresno has experienced a declining priesthood with the retirement / death ratio of priests to ordination often much greater. Many parishes share a priest who has duties at the diocesan level as well – vocations office, Tribunal, mission office, etc. Some parishes that need two active priests often have only one who may need to celebrate 5 or 6 Masses on a Sunday. The Code of Canon Law specifically states in Can. 905 §1 “A priest is not permitted to celebrate the Eucharist more than once a day except in cases where the law permits him to celebrate or concelebrate more than once on the same day.” §2. If there is a shortage of priests, the local ordinary can allow priests to celebrate twice a day for a just cause or if pastoral necessity requires it, even three times on Sundays and holy days of obligation. One of the reasons for specifically limiting the number of Masses that a priest may celebrate each day is about quality, not quantity. The question should be: “How many Masses can a priest celebrate daily well?” To celebrate even two Masses a day makes serious demands on the celebrant – physically, emotionally and spiritually. The issue is just too sacred to become routine. The shortage of priests here also makes it difficult or impossible for a priest to take a day off let alone any kind of vacation because he cannot get help. Many retired priests in our diocese who are still healthy and active, do assist in parishes – some of them year round. However, they are small in number and often committed to one or two parishes. The burden of continued work takes its toll on retired priests as well who have earned and should be enjoying a time of relaxation and leisure. At the present time, our diocese is also experiencing a lack of available priests during the summer to supply for vacation or in an emergency. In light of this predicament in our diocese and now being experienced first-hand at Good Shepherd Catholic Parish, Bishop Armando X. Ochoa has given permission for this parish to conduct a SCAP Service – Sunday Celebration in the Absence of a Priest – on weekends when one of our priests is away for vacation this summer. Due to the schedule of Masses on Sunday at Good Shepherd Catholic Parish, we must have three active priests to cover it, so conducting the SCAP service is more desirable than cancelling certain Masses on a Sunday. -Read the Rest at www.gscparish.orgGood Shepherd Catholic Parish is truly blessed through the vocation of the permanent diaconate and our five active deacons are well-prepared to be entrusted with the Celebration of Sunday Service in the Absence of a Priest as needed. In order to avoid confusion and to accommodate the schedule in the best way, the SCAP services will always be conducted at the following times / places: 10:00 a.m. - St. Charles 1:00 p.m. – St. Mary’s 7:00 p.m. – St. Mary’s These services will be conducted on the following Sundays July 3rd July 10th July 17th August 14th August 28th September 4th We should also be motivated by this dilemma to understand better the need for a larger church building in Visalia. When we are able to accommodate more people at one gathering, it will eliminate the need for 15 Masses on the weekend (which simply won’t be sustainable in the future) and allay the need for communion services even when one priest may be away on a weekend. More importantly, this also brings us together in a unified worship – one that exemplifies the true spirit of community. The plan for the new church is available on the parish website; we encourage parishioners to go to it so that they may see the progress that has been made as we approach the final version that will hopefully be a reality in the near future. 1 See Luke 24:17. 2 Codex Iuris Canonici, 1983, can. 1248§2. 3 See Directory for Sunday Celebrations in the Absence of a Priest, no. 12 Upcoming & Ongoing Events Catholic Center PARISH OFFICE 506 N. For more information please feel free to contact: Carmen Mata at 909-2589 or Maria De La Torre at 331 OUR BELOVED DEPARTED In the kindness of your prayers, please remember our most recently deceased: JOSEPH CORTEZ father of Joseph Cortez VIRGINIA SAUCEDO mother of Tony Saucedo MARIA AVILA mother of Maria de Fatima Silva RODOLFO MACIAS husband of Veronica Macias Sadly, Msgr. Raul Sanchez is the fifth priest in our Fresno diocese who has died in the past several months - four actively-serving pastors (Fr. Raul, St. Philip the Apostle, Bakersfield, Fr. Enrique Fierros, St. Mary’s in Delano, Fr. Tom Timmings, St. Anthony in Atwater, Fr. Robert Vanoncini at Sacred Heart in Dos Palos) and one retired priest (Msgr. E. James Peterson). Please pray for all priests that God may keep them healthy as they serve his Church. We put our trust in God but we, the people who are the Church, must continue to pray for vocations and to encourage young men to seek a vocation to the priesthood. It is within our families, especially, that the seed is planted and may grow to fruition. Now, more than ever, we are experiencing a dire need for priests to serve in our diocese. Our diocesan Office of Vocations is sponsoring a “Come and See” Retreat at St. Anthony Retreat Center in Three Rivers - July 29-31. Young men between the ages of 17-45 who are seriously discerning a vocation to the priesthood are welcome to come to the retreat. Registration / information forms are in the church vestibules and at the parish office. “And when he saw the crowds he felt sorry for them because they were harassed and dejected, like sheep without a shepherd.
