Bradford Avenue, Placentia, CA 92870 (714)528-1487 Fax (714)579-3791 WWW.STJOSEPHPLACENTIA.ORG Facebook: St. Joseph Catholic Church - Placentia, Ca Thirty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time November 8, 2015 PASTOR’S COLUMN “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptize them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, and teach them all that I have given you.” (Matthew 28:20) In 2013, the National Catholic Educational Association established the first week in November as National Parish Religious Education Week. During this week we at St. Joseph Placentia have reflected on the ministry of parish based efforts to form people from childhood through adulthood in our Catholic faith and service. As our parish mission statement reminds us at each Sunday Mass, we "provide and support strong faith formation" as we fulfill Christ's Great Commission to teach all the nations. The parish is the center of lifelong faith formation. Beginning on Sundays we have Children's Liturgy of the Word and Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults in the morning to high school Lifeteen in the evening. Monday through Friday every evening is taken up with elementary school faith and sacramental preparation, junior high EDGE, and high school Confirmation formation. During the day Sunday through Friday there are Bible Studies, Vatican II and Church Teaching ministries, Welcome Home to Returning Catholic opportunities, and other seasonal reflections on our Catholic journey. Each week over 700 people of all ages will grow as disciples through baptism and through the teaching that our dedicated parish ministers and our volunteers provide to St. Joseph Parish. This year the national theme is Encountering Christ Every Day. My own vocation to be a practicing Catholic, and my early formation to be a priest, came from religious education programs throughout my childhood and growing up years. I attended CCD classes every year, prepared for First Eucharist and Confirmation, and served at Mass. I am deeply grateful to those men and women who taught me the mystery of Encountering Christ Every Day. I offer my deepest thanks to those who continue to teach Christ today at St. Joseph Parish. If you are interested in participating in any of our parish faith formation opportunities, or would like to volunteer to assist in any of them, please contact me or one of our parish faith formation ministers. ~Fr. ~Padre Jack Page Two November 8, 2015 Magnificat Prayer Breakfast proudly welcomes Sr. Ines Sandoval, OCD, of the Carmelite Sisters of the Most Sacred Heart of Los Angeles. Page Three November 8, 2015 Thirty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time WIDOW’S MITE Historically, widows have been at a financial disadvantage. When her husband died, a woman’s source of income most likely went with him. That was why the generosity of a widow was striking in Biblical times. Elijah met a poor widow who prepared to use the last of her flour to bake one more cake for herself and her son. Elijah started out by asking her for a drink of water, but quickly added his request for something to eat. She informed him of her situation, but Elijah promised that her store would not empty. With no more than Elijah’s words, she trusted that God would provide for her. God’s promise was good and she did not go hungry during the drought. Another widow caught Jesus’ eye in the reading from Mark. As she put her two small coins into the collection that supplied the treasury that helped those in need, Jesus taught the disciples a lesson about true giving from the heart. Unlike the officials who demonstratively gave their offerings, this woman quietly dropped the coins of her sustenance into the collection. The monetary value of her gift was far smaller than that of the officials, but her gift was far more valuable. GIVING FROM THE HEART Much of our giving is from our surplus. This is true not only of what we give financially, but also of our service. We are very busy people and generally when we offer our time, it is of direct benefit to us or someone we love. We may volunteer to help with a field trip at school, coach a soccer team, or help in a nursing home; but generally it is we or our family members who benefit from our generosity. We may find, however, that as it did for the widow of the first reading, our generosity may be greeted with more generosity. The prayer of St. Francis reminds us of this when we pray, “It is in giving that we receive.” Today’s Readings: 1 Kings 17:10–16; Psalm 146: 7–10; Hebrews 9:24–28; Mark 12:38–44 Copyright © 2005, World Library Publications.
