at an alarming rate; even

risks that obesity brings
to our children. Obesity
may lead to hypertension,
higher cholesterol, and
diabetes. Also, the Centers
for Disease Control and
Prevention says, as children
get older and become teens,
they are more likely to be
obese compared to children
of pre-school age.
Here’s what we can do:
■Get moving! Being physically active for at least an
hour each day can help us
all “lighten up.”
■Too much computer or
TV time? Time to put a
limit on that.
■Fruits and veggies
are your weight-loss
friends! Drink fewer
sodas and other
sweetened beverages.
■Breakfast is your best
friend! You will eat less
later.
■Fly past those fast food
restaurants. Make “Eating Out” an occasional
activity.
■Looking for fun family
time! Have them around
the table with planned
meals and smarter, appropriate portion sizes.

ere’s how Health Care at School works
for students. School-based nursing
services are part of the Atlanta Public
Schools’ School Health Services Program as well
as School Systems in the surrounding counties.
These services operate on a referral system
from parents and guardians in order for students to receive individualized health services.
Services provided by school nurses include
individualized screenings such as for vision,
hearing, and dental. Referrals of those who may
have health problems (or if it is suspected that
they do) can be taken from parents, personnel
at the school, students, and community health
care providers. Referrals are submitted to the
health services professional at the schools or
the Central Health Office.

Checkups and Exams
R
egular physical
checkups not only
ensure overall health
but they are also very
important for detecting
breast and cervical cancer
at their earliest stages. For
Georgia women, breast
cancer is the most common
form of cancer so regular
checkups are even more
critical.
Here’s a recommendation
from the American Cancer
Society: Yearly mammograms starting at the age of
40 for most women along
with clinical breast exams as
part of health assessments
(about every three-years for
women in their 20’s and 30’s
and every year for women
40 and up.)
Another important
reminder for women: Make
an annual Pap smear test
part of your health routine.
The test can detect cervical
cancer during early stages.
Again, the Georgia
Department of Human
Resources says those screenings should start three years
after vaginal intercourse
begins but no later than the
age of 21.

If you meet certain eligibility requirements, you may
be able to take advantage
of the Cancer Screening
Program (formerly the
Georgia Breast and Cervical
Cancer Program - BCCP).
This is a statewide

What Is Hiv/Aids?
HIV is the virus that
causes AIDS (Acquired
Immune Deficiency Syndrome), which affects the
immune system, the part
of the body that fights
diseases. Untreated, AIDS
can be fatal because our
bodies are unable to fight
infections.
How Do People
Become Infected?
HIV is acquired through
the blood stream (sharing needles for drugs, or
tattoos) or through sexual
relationships with people
who are infected. You
cannot tell if a person has
HIV or AIDS (the person
might not know either) but
don’t worry: you won’t be
infected by shaking hands
or working with someone
with HIV/AIDS.

What is Tb?
Tuberculosis (TB) is caused by a bacteria that attacks
your lungs as well as the brain and kidneys. Symptoms
include bad cough, pain in the chest, weakness, fatigue, and fever. If untreated, tuberculosis can be fatal.
How Do You Get Tb?
Tuberculosis is spread through the air when a person
with an active TB disease coughs, sneezes, or talks.
Not everyone that has the TB bacteria becomes sick.
Treatment
Persons diagnosed with TB can be treated by taking
several drugs for six months to a year.

W
hen you are
expecting, everything you eat and
drink could have an effect
on your baby.
Drinking during your
pregnancy is especially dangerous to your baby with the
most serious risk being Fetal
Alcohol Syndrome (FAS).
That’s the name for a
group of birth defects and
developmental disabilities
such as abnormalities of
the face, problems with
growth, mental retardation, and even learning and
behavioral problems.
There is also FAE (Fetal
Alcohol Effect). This describes newborns with less
severe birth defects and
disabilities.
Remember, babies born
with fetal alcohol-related
damage have disabilities
that last for the rest of
their lives.
And here is an important
note: The Georgia Department of Community Health
says there is “no known
safe level of alcohol use
during pregnancy.” So, even
if you drink just a little,
you still might affect your
baby’s health.
What to do:
■■If you’re pregnant, don’t
drink.
■■If you are drinking during your pregnancy...stop
now. That can reduce the
chances of your baby being born with problems.
■■If you are thinking of
becoming pregnant, stop
drinking now. Drinking
during the earliest stages
of your pregnancy (when
you may not even know
you are expecting) can
be harmful to your child.
■■If you are breastfeeding,
don’ drink. The March of
Dimes says some alcohol
can reach the baby
through breast milk.
■■If you know someone who
is pregnant, share this
information with them.
■■If you are a services provider to pregnant women
and women of reproductive
age...screen them for alcohol
and substance abuse.
■■Increase your chances of a
healthy baby. Staying away
from alcohol before and
during pregnancy can go
a long way in making sure
that happens.

de la obesidad, tenemos que
esforzarnos en aprender
nuevos conceptos de salud, al tiempo
que servimos alimentos nutritivos
para nuestros hijos. Las estadísticas
indican que este es un problema que
está aumentando en proporciones
alarmantes, de hecho, los casos de
obesidad infantil se han triplicado
desde la década de los años sesenta.
Todavía estamos a tiempo para
hacer algo al respecto. Particularmente cuando tomamos en consideración los riesgos que la obesidad
tiene para nuestros hijos, como es el
alto riesgo de hipertensión, mayores
índices de colesterol e, incluso, la
diabetes. Los Centros para el Control
y la Prevención de Enfermedades
indican que hoy día, a medida que los
niños crecen y alcanzan la adolescencia tienen mayor probabilidad de
padecer de obesidad cuando se compara con niños de edad preescolar.
A continuación enumeramos las
cosas que podemos hacer:
■■¡Muévase! Mantenemos físicamente activos por lo menos una
hora al día nos ayuda a mantenernos saludables.
■■¿Demasiado tiempo en el computador o frente al televisor? Ya
es hora de reducir el tiempo que
les dedicamos a estas actividades.
■■Las frutas y las verduras son
los amigos que le(a) ayudan a
adelgazar.
■■Consuma menos gaseosas y otras
bebidas azucaradas.
■■El desayuno es su mejor amigo.
Comerá menos durante el día.
■■Pase volando por esos restaurantes de comida rápida. Sólo coma
fuera de casa de vez en cuando.
■■Haga que la hora de comer sea enretenida para su familia. Llámeles
para que ocupen su lugar en la
mesa y ofrézcales platos planificados y con porciones adecuadas.

sistemas escolares en los condados circundantes.
Estos servicios funcionan con un sistema de remisiones o referidos para que los padres o tutores puedan

¿Qué Es El Vih/Sida?
El VIH es el virus que
causa el SIDA (Síndrome
de Inmunodeficiencia
Adquirida), el cual afecta
al sistema inmunológico,
esa parte del organismo
que combate las enfermedades. Si no se brinda
tratamiento, el SIDA
puede ser mortal porque
nuestros organismos no
pueden combatir las infecciones.
¿Cómo Se Contagia?
El VIH se adquiere a
través del flujo sanguíneo
(compartiendo agujas
hipodérmicas para drogas
o tatuajes) o a través de
relaciones sexuales con
personas que estén contagiadas. Usted no puede
saber si una persona tiene
VIH o SIDA (es posible
que la persona tampoco
lo sepa), pero no se
preocupe: no se contagiará
estrechando las manos ni
trabajando con alguien que
tenga VIH/SIDA.
El SIDA se puede
evitar, de modo que es
importante protegerse,
usar condones y hacerse
la prueba para evitar el
contagio y contagiar a
otras personas. Todavía
no existe una cura para
el Virus de la Inmunodeficiencia Humana (VIH),

La Tuberculosis
¿Qué Es La Tuberculosis?
La tuberculosis (TB, en inglés) la causa una bacteria que ataca los pulmones, así como al cerebro y los riñones. Algunos de sus síntomas son tos
persistente, dolor en el pecho, debilidad, cansancio y fiebre. La tuberculosis puede ser mortal si no se cura.
¿Cómo Se Contagia?
La tuberculosis se propaga por el aire cuando tose, estornuda o habla una
persona que tenga activa la enfermedad de la tuberculosis. No todas las
personas que tengan latente la bacteria de TB se enferman.
Tratamiento
Las personas que han sido diagnosticadas con TB pueden recibir un
tratamiento que consiste en varios fármacos que se toman durante seis
(6) meses a un año.

El Embarazo y Las
Bebidas Alcohólicas
No Son Mezclan
C
uando esté encinta,
todo lo que coma o
beba podría afectar
a su bebé.
El consumo de bebidas
alcohólicas durante el
embarazo es particularmente peligroso para su
bebé ya que éste podría
correr el riesgo de sufrir del
Síndrome de Alcoholismo
Fetal (FAS, por sus siglas en
inglés).
Este es el nombre que se
le da a un grupo de defectos congénitos y discapacidades del desarrollo, como
anormalidades en el rostro,
problemas con el crecimiento, atrasos mentales
e, incluso, problemas del
aprendizaje y comportamiento.
También existe la
posibilidad del Efecto del
Alcoholismo Fetal (FAE, por
sus siglas en inglés). Esta
condición describe a recién
nacidos con defectos congénitos y discapacidades
menos graves.
Tenga presente que
los bebés que nazcan con
lesiones fetales relacionadas con el alcohol presentan discapacidades que
persisten por el resto de
sus vidas.
El Departamento de
Salud Comunitario de Georgia indica que “no existe un
nivel inocuo de consumo de
bebidas alcohólicas durante
el embarazo”. De modo
que si solamente bebe muy
poco, aún así podría afectar
la salud de su bebé.
Qué Hacer:
■■Si está embarazada, no
beba.
■■Si ha estado bebiendo
durante su embarazo. .
. deje de hacerlo ahora
mismo. Esto puede reducir las probabilidades
de que su bebé nazca con
problemas.
■■Si tiene pensado quedar
encinta, deje de beber
ahora mismo. Tomar
alcohol durante las primeras fases de su embarazo (cuando es posible que
ni siquiera sepa que está
embarazada) puede ser
perjudicial para su bebé.
■■Si le da el pecho a
su bebé, no consuma
bebidas alcohólicas. La
March of Dimes indica
que el alcohol puede
llegarle al bebé a través
de la leche materna.
■■Si conoce a alguien que
esté embarazada, comparta esta información
con ella.
■■Si usted es un proveedor
de servicios que atiende
a mujeres embarazadas
y a mujeres en edad de
reproducirse. . . hágales
la prueba de alcoholismo
y de toxicomanía.
■■Aumente sus proba-
bilidades de dar a luz
un bebé saludable. Si no
ingiere bebidas alcohólicas antes y durante
su embarazo ayudará
muchísimo a la salud de
su bebé.

omparten ideas y sentimientos con una persona que
esté interesada en escuchar
y que haya sido capacitada para
ayudar es un consuelo para quien
lo necesita.
A continuación enumeramos
algunos síntomas que le ayudarán
a determinar si usted o un ser
querido necesitan hablar con
alguien:
■■Estado anímico deprimido que
dura mucho tiempo
■■Una sensación de desesperanza
■■Desesperación
■■Ansiedad y (o) tensión
■■Problemas para conciliar el
sueño
■■Retraimiento
■■Un aumento en el consumo de
bebidas alcohólicas y (o) drogas
■■Amenazas de suicidio o conversaciones donde se manifieste un
intenso deseo de morir
■■Rabia o enojo imprevistos
■■Siempre hay ayuda disponible
en cualquier momento en que
la necesite. Solicite ayuda. Allí
encontrará a alguien que podrá
ayudarle(a).
