Citizen Kane, Daddy Warbucks, and King Midas are only a few of the familiar fictional characters who thought enormous wealth could buy happiness and fulfillment. Daddy Warbucks admitted stepping on a few people in his climb to the top. Kane tried to buy the printed word and stardom for his young wife, while King Midas conjured immense wealth and tragedy by his very touch. We learn clearly in today’s readings that none of this is really possible. True happiness comes from caring for someone other than ourselves. It comes from the pursuit of the virtues Paul described to Timothy: faith, love, gentleness, godliness, righteousness, and endurance. The Gospel reminds us that we dare not ignore the needs of others, acting as though we don’t notice their suffering. God’s call to us is much too clear to disregard for even one more day. —Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. ANNUAL MISSION COOPERATIVE MISSION APPEL - Diocese of Mandeville, Jamaica When we think of Jamaica, we think of Ocho Rios, beautiful beaches, vacations and wonderful scenery. But, Jamaica is among the poorest countries in our hemisphere and the Diocese of Mandeville is the poorest of the three dioceses in Jamaica where 68% of the people have no running water. 25% of youth are “functionally illiterate;” there is an alarming number of destitute elderly and abandoned children; and, the average Sunday collection is 10% of the operating cost. The Diocese of Mandeville is VERY POOR! Each year, a missionary is assigned to our parish from the Diocesan Mission Office for an appeal asking our assistance for the very poor. This weekend we welcome Fr. Gary Wiesmann for our annual mission appeal—this year, on behalf of the Diocese of Mandeville, Jamaica. Please consider supporting the evangelization programs and outreach to the extremely poor people of this diocese in our second collection next weekend. DIOCESAN DISCERNMENT MEETING The Vocations Office cordially invites you to the next “Priesthood Discernment” evening. The purpose is to familiarize interested men with the life, prayer, and possible call to Priesthood in the Diocese of Orange. There is no commitment, other than the expression of interest to participate. The next “Priesthood Discernment” evening will be held on Wednesday, October 12th, 2016 at 6:00p.m. ~ Diocese of Orange Pastoral Center, First Floor, Room 1D, Christ Cathedral Campus. Please give serious thought to this invitation. "“The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest." (Mt 9:37-38). If you have any questions regarding the “Priesthood Discernment” evening, please contact the Director of Vocations, Rev. John Moneypenny at (714) 282-3036, or via email [email protected].
