KEEP PRAYING
St. Monica, whose feast we celebrate in August, is often known as “the persistent mother.” She watched her oldest son, Augustine, turn his back on his
Christian faith.
Monica was exasperated. For years she gave up talking directly to her son
on the advice of a local bishop, who told her that it was better to talk to God
about Augustine then to Augustine about God.
The mother never gave up praying for her son. Eventually Augustine gave
up his wild ways, was baptized, and later ordained and named bishop of Hippo. St. Augustine went on to become one of the Church’s greatest scholars.
Today’s readings address the importance of persistent prayer. Abraham, in
spite of trepidation that he is bothering the Lord, continues to ask about the
fate of Sodom and Gomorrah. Jesus, in Luke’s Gospel, tells his disciples to
“ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be
opened to you” (Luke 11:9). This is our charge: keep praying.
TODAY’S READINGS
READINGS FOR THE WEEK
First Reading — Abraham bargains
with God to spare the city (Genesis
18:20-32).

for help, you answered me (Psalm

Second Reading — Buried with
Christ in baptism, we were also
raised with him; all our transgressions are forgiven (Colossians 2:1214).
Gospel — Jesus speaks of God’s
sure response to those who pray
(Luke 11:1-13).

AND ON:
SUNDAY AUG 21ST AND 28TH
REGISTRATON WILL BE HELD IN
ST. MICHAEL’S HALL FROM
9:00AM – 3:00PM
Why do Catholics call God “Father”?
We call God “Father” for two reasons: first,
because he is our Creator and our origin,
and second because he loves and cares for
us as a father does for his children.
Upcoming Events
A COPY OF YOUR CHILDS BAPTISMAL CERTIFICATE IS DUE AT
TIME OF REGISTRATION IF THEY ARE ELIGIBLE TO RECEIVE A
SACRAMENT THIS YEAR.
FAITH FORMATION SESSIONS BEGIN
SUN. SEPT. 11TH session Ɵmes are: 10:1511:45AM
Why be a Catechist?
+ The BEST way to learn is to teach.
+ Your own faith will come alive.
+ You become an active participant in one of the
essential responsibilities of a Church commu‐
nity.
+ You assist in bringing Christ to others.
+ You practice stewardship.
+ You show your own family that you value the
Faith.
+ You become a role model.
We are called to be witnesses to the Gospel in
our families and among our friends and neighbors
– but sometimes we hear a deeper call, feel a
greater desire to convey our beliefs in a more for‐
mal, structured way. It is then that we realize that
we are being asked to proclaim the Gospel as
“irreplaceable evangelizers”. In short we are
called to be catechists. If you feel the spirit is call‐
ing you to do something special for God, for the
church, and for your fellow Catholics, you’ll never
regret saying ‘YES’ to that call. And in responding
you may find you are doing something special for
yourself. Please call Philomena if you are being
called. We need you!! 813‐884‐3624

and his twenty years of ministry in our diocese.
During this time of transition, we trust in Your love,
confident that You will once again give to the Diocese of St.
Petersburg

Christ’s heart of mercy,
His voice of hope and hands of justice.
Guide our new bishop to enlighten
our hearts and minds with the truth of the Gospel,
the power of the sacraments,
and the desire to serve you in all things.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Decimoséptimo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario
SIGUE REZANDO
