Objective: To assess pain characteristics in patients of the National Edgardo Rebagliati Martins Hospital. Materials and methods: In a sample of 566 patients, we evaluated the pain intensity according to the levels of the Visual Analogue Scale (0-10), where zero (0) indicates “no pain” and ten (10) the “maximum pain intensity” by using it before and after the treatment. We used a prospective cross sectional survey with 10 questions. The patients who answered “yes” for pain continued the survey in order to obtain the different characteristics of pain: duration, constancy or intermittence, how to start, type of pain, pain location, if interfered with normal activity, sleep and what was the condition of the patient. Results: We found the highest percentage of patients with pain (90%) in the surgery department, the highest percentage of patients without pain was found in the Internal Medicine Services (27%). Conclusion: In the Internal Medicine Services we found the lowest incidence of patients without pain because of the nature of pathology. It was also noted that pain interferes with normal activity of the patient as well as sleep quality; besides it influence on the mood of the patients being most frequent the depression.
