Our Lord's Mercy grants forgiveness of all sins and punishment on the Feast of Divine Mercy, for even the most hardened sinners! A plenary indulgence is granted (under the usual conditions of a sacramental confession, Eucharistic communion and a prayer for the intentions of the Supreme Pontiff) to the faithful who, on Divine Mercy Sunday, in a spirit that is completely detached from the affection for any sin, recite the Our Father, the Creed, and also adding a devout prayer, such as the Chaplet of Divine Mercy. There will be a time for confessions (2:00PM – 2:45PM) and a Holy Hour (3:00PM – 4:00PM) with Exposition of the Eucharist in honor of the Divine Mercy. Prayer pamphlets will be provided. Maybe not materially, but I’ve had the opportunity to meet, work, or live with people who have left me with the feeling of being privileged for having crossed paths with them during my life. These are the men and women who have shaped my faith with the depth and generosity of theirs. Two people who stand out in my mind today are Pope John Paul II, who is to be beatified today and Fr. John Mckniff, O.S.A., whose cause for beatification is being promoted by the Augustinians. One week after 9/11, I had a semi private audience with Pope John Paul II and 39 other Augustinian provincials at Castel Gondolfo. Each of us received a personal blessing and a Rosary from him. His sense of service and depth of his prayer life touched and shaped mine. Finally meeting him left me both speechless and humbled. I remembered him today. The other priest was Fr. Mckniff, a missionary. He was ordained in 1936 and immediately went to work in the Philippines during the late 30’s. Due to illness, he left for the US in 1939. Yet when an opportunity opened up to work in Havana, Cuba he volunteered in 1942. He served the poor as a parish priest until 1971, when he was kicked out of Cuba by the government. In 1971 he went to work in our missions in northern Peru until his death in 1994. Our paths crossed through our work from 1977 until 1994. I felt privileged to both live and work with him. I may not have agreed with him on a lot of issues, but I admired his sense of service and depth of his prayer life. His faith also shaped mine. Both of these people showed me a face of Christ’s mercy-the mercy we celebrate today. When I was installed as pastor, I told you that your faith shapes mine. That still holds true. Let’s extend the privilege of sharing our faith with each other this year. Paz, (Peace) Fr. Steve Ochoa, O.S.A.
