La Directora Burbank Friday, Apr. 8 Deadline for SAT Registration (Continued on page 5) 2 March/April 2016 Communicat Spring Testing Information and Bell Schedule: From Instructional Vice Principal Diane Mazzei WHS 11th Grade SBAC Testing Schedule: April 14-April 19, 2016 10th Grade CAASPP- Life Science Exam - April 14 and 15! The Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments are part of the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) System, which replaced the previous Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) Program. The CAASPP System is intended to provide parents and students more accurate and actionable information about what students are learning. Because the Smarter Balanced Assessments, which are administered as part of the CAASPP System, are computer adaptive, these Assessments will also provide better information about the needs and successes of individual students. California's state universities and most community colleges use the eleventh grade results as an early signal of readiness to take college courses. The new Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments are very different from the old STAR tests in several ways: 1. They are aligned with California’s new content standards for ELA and mathematics. 2. They reflect the critical thinking and problem solving skills that students will need to be ready for college and the 21st century job market. 3. They are taken on a computer and are adaptive, which means that during the test, the questions will become more or less difficult on the basis of how the student performs. If the student answers a question correctly, the next question may be a bit more challenging; if the student answers it incorrectly, the next question may be less difficult. 4. They provide many more supports for students who need them, including students learning English and students with disabilities, as described in the section below. (Student choice) All 2016-2017 Woodside High School students are expected to read a minimum of one book (must be appropriate for school) over the summer. WHS students will self-select the book they wish to read over the summer. (150-page minimum) The New Big Read will be held on Monday, August 29, 2016. Students will be given a choice of assignments to complete. (Stay-tuned for more details) Goals: 1. Advance literacy and academic performance by engaging high school students in reading. 2. Foster a love of reading in high school students’ through self-selected summer reading. Rationale: “Summer Slide” It is estimated that school summer breaks will cause the average student to lose up to one month of instruction, with disadvantaged students being disproportionately affected (Cooper, 1996). Woodside’s CAT-ACS team hosted a dozen community agencies at its annual Spring Health Fair at the beginning of February. These community agencies have graciously committed to the possibility of returning next year in the evening to outreach to parents who may be interested in their services for their student or even for themselves. Most of these agencies provide adults support services as well as teens and youth. But why wait until next year to get this information out to you? Here is a short list of the agencies that welcome your inquiries. Unfortunately, the descriptions of all the services they provide would be too lengthy to list, so please visit their websites through the links or feel free to call directly to speak to a person. Most, if not all, have Spanish-language services as well. 22 1. Boys & Girls Club of the Peninsula (http://www.bgcp.org) (650)646-6140 2.
