ST. LEO THE GREAT CHURCH
FAIRFAX, VIRGINIA
www.stleofairfax.com
Dear Friends,
We celebrate this weekend the Feast of the Triumph of
the Cross. I have reprinted a portion of a homily given
by Pope St. John Paul II on the occasion of this feast in
1988.
This is the meaning of the Cross of
Christ. This is its power. “God sent his
Son into the world not to condemn the
world, but so that through him the world
might be saved” (Io. 3, 17).
The feast that we celebrate today speaks
of a marvelous and ceaseless action of
God in human history, in the history of
every man, woman and child. The Cross
of Christ on Golgotha has become for all
time the centre of this saving work of
God. Christ is the Savior of the world,
because in him and through him the love
with which God so loved the world is
continuously revealed: “God loved the
world so much that he gave his only
Son” (Ibid. 3, 16).
– The Father gave him so that this Son,
who is one in substance with him, would
become man by being conceived of the
Virgin Mary.
– The Father gave him so that as the Son
of Man he would proclaim the Gospel,
the Good News of salvation.
– The Father gave him so that this Son,
by responding with his own infinite love
to the love of the Father, might offer
himself on the Cross.
From a human point of view,
Christ’s offering of himself on the Cross
was a sign of contradiction, an
unthinkable disgrace. It was, in fact, the
most profound humiliation possible.
Through his self-emptying on Golgotha,
in the disgrace of the Cross and the
September 14, 2014
crucifixion (at least in the human way of
understanding these events) Christ
receives the highest exaltation. In God’s
eyes, the Cross is the greatest triumph.
The way of human judgment is very
different from God’s. God’s judgment far
surpasses ours. What seems to us to be
failure is, in God’s eyes, the victory of
sacrificial love.
In Christ,
Rev. David A. Whitestone, Pastor

A VOCATION VIEW
“Whoever believes in the Son of Man will have
eternal life.” Are you called to bring faith in
Christ and eternal life to others as a priest,
deacon or in the consecrated life? Call Father
J.D. Jaffe at 703-841-2514 or write:
[email protected].
Music Liturgy at St. Leo the Great
Joining a choir gives us a chance to minister to others through
music – to serve the church. What a privilege to be used by God for
this purpose! Ultimately the best reason to join a church choir is that
you get to praise God through song. Our choirs will soon return
(after a brief summer vacation) to leading the congregation in song.
Is God calling you to join one of our choirs and serve the church in
this way? If so, the best time to join is NOW. Please contact our
music director, Lorraine Neill: [email protected] or 703273-4682 if you would like to join any of our choirs.
Our YOUTH CHOIR is accepting boys and girls entering 3rd—6th
grade & rehearses weekly Tuesdays from 3–4 PM. If your child
attends St. Leo School, they will be picked up at dismissal. The
choir sings twice a month – at 5 PM Mass on Saturday or 9 AM
Mass on Sunday. The first rehearsal was on Tuesday, Sept 9th.
The TEEN CHOIR is accepting new teens entering 7th grade
through high school. We are looking for singers & instrumentalists!
The group rehearses Tuesdays from 7–8 PM and sings twice
monthly at Mass alternating between 5 PM Saturday, 5 PM Sunday
& 9 AM Sunday. The first rehearsal was September 9th!
The ADULT CHOIR sings at the 11 AM Mass on Sunday and
rehearses Wednesdays from 7:30–9 PM. This traditional choir sings
4-part music. It is helpful if you have had some experience singing in
a choir. They also prepare the music for Holy Days, Confirmation,
Christmas Midnight Mass, Holy Week, & various other celebrations
where music is needed. The first rehearsal was August 27th!
The CONTEMPORARY CHOIR sings at the 9:00 AM Mass under
the direction of Ann LaBarge, and rehearses Thursdays in the St.
Cecilia music room at 7:30 PM. If you would like to sing in this choir,
contact Ann at [email protected]
Our HANDBELL CHOIR is looking for new members. They will
meet this year on Wednesday from 6:30–7:30 PM. It is necessary to
have a basic knowledge of note reading to be a successful ringer.
Contact Lorraine Neill if you are interested.
We are in need of CANTORS to lead the singing once or twice a
month at our Masses. If you are a professionally trained singer,
perhaps you are being called to serve the church in this way.
Contact Lorraine Neill if you are interested.

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a
process for bringing into the Catholic Church both those who
have never been baptized and those who were baptized in a
non-Catholic church. RCIA is also the best way for adult
Catholics who have never been confirmed to prepare for the
final Sacrament of Initiation.
Every September, a new RCIA class begins at St. Leo the
Great and we invite any adult who would like to join the
Catholic Church, be confirmed, or who is simply interested in
learning about the teachings and customs of Catholic
Christianity to come and join us. While classroom work is part
of the process, RCIA is more than a class; it is a gradual
introduction to the customs, beliefs, practices, and devotions
of Catholicism. There is no obligation, only an opportunity to
learn!
RCIA meets on Tuesdays from 7:30pm-9:00pm in the
Guadalupe Room beginning on September 16.
For additional information, please contact Carolyn Smith:
[email protected] or 703-273-5369.
