now found west of Broadway in Washington

students per year and greatly improve the way
they learn.
“I think this building will be transformative,”
he remarked. “It incorporates all the modern
aspects of medical education and takes them
to the next step.”

P. Roy Vagelos, a graduate of the university’s
College of Physicians and Surgeons, and
his wife Diana, who made an initial lead
contribution toward construction of the

On July 27, CUMC provided an advance
look at the building and provided demos of
various simulation rooms.
One included an open-heart surgery
simulator that allows medical students to
mimic a cardiopulmonary bypass procedure.
Equipment included an extracorporeal
membrane oxygenation (ECMO) machine,
which can drain patient blood, add oxygen
and remove carbon dioxide, then return the
blood to the artery and pump it through the

it because they’ve seen it before in their
training,” remarked Dr. Audrey Merriam,
Postdoctoral Clinical Fellow in CUMC’s
Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

“We needed a space that could be adaptable
to how we teach, and how students learn,” said

of Columbia’s College of Physicians and
Surgeons. “We never had a facility just for
these students.”

and they’re sprawling,” said Elizabeth Diller,

“This is distinctly different. It’s vertical, with
a very small footprint.”
Diller said that the focal point of the
building’s design is known as the Study
Cascade, a series of study and social spaces
H[WHQGLQJDFURVVQXPHURXVÀRRUVDQGOLQNHG
by an exposed, interconnected vertical
staircase that stretches the entire height of the
building.
The alcove interiors of the Study Cascade
are designed for collaborative learning, said
Diller, and open onto south-facing outdoor
spaces and terraces. Sheer walls of windows
provide views of the Hudson River and the
rest of Manhattan.

“It was important that we could be on the
cutting edge of technology,” said Burke. “A
building like this probably could not even
have been built 15 years ago.”
Diller said Columbia students were
extensively interviewed as part of the design
process to ensure their needs were met.
“We aspired to make a building that
students wouldn’t want to escape from,” said
Diller.
“This is a building that people might be
in for 12 to 14 hours a day, so it’s important
that they feel comfortable and relaxed here,”
commented Burke. “We tried to give it a very
sculpted, very warm feel and incorporate the
views as much as possible.”
The site features 18,000 square feet of
simulation and learning space, including six
multipurpose simulation rooms that allow
students to practice skills on computerized,
whole-body mannequins.
They also practice on real cadavers in the
clinical gross anatomy lab, which features
video cameras at each table along with bright,
state-of-the art lighting.

the public.
“We’ve opened up some space, and
opened up more of the river view,” said
Goldman. “From a community perspective,
I think this is a really good addition to the
neighborhood.”
The Vagelos Education Center is part of
an extensive revitalization campaign for
CUMC’s Washington Heights campus, which
also includes a new headquarters for the
School of Nursing, slated to be completed
in spring 2017, and renovations to several
existing buildings.
In addition, CUMC will open two new
buildings in West Harlem — the Jerome L.
Greene Science Center and Lenfest Center
for the Arts — during the coming 2016-17
