Thank You
Ardis Neilsen
In December 2015, our long-time visionary leader, friend,
educator, and much beloved dean Ardis Neilsen will transition
into what some call, retirement. But for Ardis, who for 29 years
has been a tireless champion and advocate for accessible
education throughout the community, ‘retirement’ is a word
more than an action. In fact, her motto as dean of Community
Education has always been to “better serve the needs of our
community.” And we can be assured that she will continue to do
exactly that.
Ardis began her career at Allan Hancock College in 1977 as a public communication specialist
for the Community Education department. After moving out of the Santa Maria area for a
time, she returned in 1987, and rejoined the department that she loves to steadily build a
successful, community needs-oriented program. She went from an entry-level position to
Community Education coordinator to director of Economic Development, then to associate
dean, and finally to her current position as dean. For the last six years, she has served
simultaneously as dean of Community Education and of credit departments including the
Children’s Center.
If you were to look behind the scenes of the noncredit program, you would see Ardis
steadfastly and meticulously working, always keeping the Community Education mission
at the heart of what she does—designing a great program that helps people obtain jobs,
transition into credit classes, or gain new skills for personal growth.
Through her persistence and diligence, she developed and managed multiple federal and
state grants with funding from NASA, National Science Foundation, Department of Labor,
and Housing and Urban Development totaling over $1.4 million, to bring positive change
to students. She has always been intimately involved and forward thinking in developing
new classes and programs for the community over the years, and was instrumental in
helping to bring the Atkinson Lifelong Learning Center to the community and the new
Community Education building that was completed in 2007 to create a “home” for noncredit
students on the main AHC campus.
Many popular programs and events over the last three decades also bear her footprint,
including College for Kids, and later the Youth Dance program. She also created Arts &
Lectures events for all ages such as the Faculty Lecture Series, Writer’s Night, Film Series and
Festivals, and Magical Moments. She worked with many community partners to present
forums and conferences on social issues like gang prevention, suicide awareness, and the
local Japanese-American World War II internment oral history project. Her accomplishments are beyond measure, and her commitment to enriching the lives of community
residents resonates with all of us who have been beneficiaries of her efforts.
For those of us who have had the pleasure to work closely with Ardis, her departure is
bittersweet. We, in Community Education, treasure her for her fighting spirit as she has
been a passionate advocate for students and has worked hard to ensure that Community
Education created opportunities for those who wish to improve and enrich their lives in a
lifelong learning environment.
When you see Ardis in the community, thank her. If you are enjoying one of many noncredit
classes, she likely had something to do with it. Ardis, you will always be a part of Allan
Hancock College. We wish you the best in your new pursuits and grand adventures.

Faculty Spotlight
Andria Keiser
ESL Noncredit Assistant Professor/Coordinator
B.A. Linguistics • UC Santa Barbara
M.A. Linguistics / ESL • Cal State Fresno
Andria is Community Education’s first full-time noncredit ESL faculty member
and an alumna of Allan Hancock College.
She has been an educator for 13 years, part as ESL (credit and noncredit)
instructor for AHC and also for the Lompoc Unified School District’s Adult
Education program, where she was the full-time lead ESL instructor for seven
years. While attending CSU Fresno, she focused on curriculum development
and discourse analysis. Part of her job here will be working with ESL credit
faculty in supporting student transfer success.
Andria has a passion for languages, and as a linguist, she speaks Spanish and
has studied the cultures and languages of Japan and France. She studied Japanese
for a year and was impressed with the effective techniques used to teach the
language, and that led her to become involved in ESL.
“I have always been fascinated with languages,” she said. “I enjoy learning
languages and experiencing the diverse cultures that are part of that learning
process. “
Andria is equally thrilled to be joining the noncredit ESL team and said she
looks forward to the challenge of working at Community Education and
continuing to learn and grow both professionally and personally. “I have been
blessed to learn from and work with great leaders and teachers over the years,
and I am excited to apply what I’ve learned.”
She especially loves teaching adults. “I love this population of students! They
come to learn and are thirsty for knowledge,” she said. “Each student has his or
her own unique set of life experiences and educational background that lends
itself to the classroom dynamic.”
“I want to inspire and help my students gain confidence in their ability to
learn English and to see all the opportunities that they have to practice what
they learn in my class and to set goals in their English language acquisition,”
she said. “My desire is that they leave my class with personal improvements
in reading, writing, listening, and speaking, and with the ability to apply what
they have learned—as well as the techniques they used learning it—to their
future studies.”

Student Success
Edwin Mazariegos overcame many life challenges that led him to a life of
learning and success! At age 13, when he and his family left Guatemala
for California, he faced challenges of not speaking English, then dealing
with his father’s death shortly after the family’s arrival. He left school
to work and help support his family. Years later, he returned to school,
enrolled in Allan Hancock College’s Community Education English as a
Second Language and basic math skills classes, then transferred to credit.
Eventually he embarked on an automotive technology educational
pathway and found a passion, as well as academic success, achieving a high GPA and
completing all requirements to earn his Certificate of Achievement in automotive technology.
Today, Edwin is realizing his dream as mechanical repairs manager at the renowned Alisal
Guest Ranch and Resort, a 10,000-acre cattle (dude) ranch in Solvang, which quietly attracts
the rich and famous. He supervises a staff of four to eight and oversees maintenance and
repairs for two fleets of golf carts (totaling 250) used on the property’s two championship
golf courses, multiple ranch vehicles, and other motorized equipment.
He credits Allan Hancock College with paving the way for his current job success. But it was
his strong determination that kept him enrolled in classes, and he still continues to further
expand his education and has instilled those values in his children.

General Information
What is the difference between
noncredit and community
service (fee-based) classes?
Community Education offers two types of
classes: noncredit and Community Service
(fee-based). Most noncredit classes are free
of charge because districts are not permitted
to charge fees for noncredit classes eligible
for state apportionment (Education Code
84757). However, some noncredit classes
have optional materials fees consistent with
Title 5 regulations. Community Service
(fee-based) classes do not receive public
funding. These classes charge an enrollment
fee to remain self-supporting, as required
by state law.
Community Education
student identification card
To obtain a non-photo ID card free of charge
or a photo ID card for $2, visit Community
Education (bldg. S). If the card is lost, a $2
replacement fee is charged for photo ID cards.
Parking
Parking permits are required when classes
are in session for all vehicles parked on the
Santa Maria campus and at the Lompoc
Valley Center between the hours of 8 a.m.
and 10 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and
8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday. Students and
visitors may park in white-lined stalls
only. Purchasing a parking permit does not
imply or guarantee a parking space.

A WORD ABOUT OUR MAILING: Mailing
Spectrum to the public may seem costly.
However, we have explored numerous methods
of distribution and this one (using the US Postal
Service bulk mail process) is still the most efficient
for the money. It costs approximately .07 cents
to mail you this schedule (because it is addressed
to residential customer) versus $1.10 or more if
you phoned to request a Spectrum be sent to
you. In addition, printing costs per Spectrum
are relatively low at about $0.07 each. Because
Allan Hancock College serves tens of thousands of
people in our community, we feel it is important to
keep you informed about our programs. As costs
increase, we will continue to examine distribution
methods to ensure cost effectiveness. If you
should receive a duplicate copy of this Spectrum,
or if you cannot use this schedule, please pass it
