1. Identifying and Addressing the Effects of Bullying
As early childhood professionals, we recognize typical development of children’s progression
through social skills. Acts of aggression such as taking each other’s toys, physically expressing
emotion and outbursts are still typical behavior in three to five year-olds as they are learning the
art of interacting with peers.
While all bullying is aggression, not all aggression is bullying. To be considered bullying, the bully
must display behavior that is intended to hurt, harm, or injure another person, and done on
numerous occasions.
During preschool, bullying is based more on the here and now, and likely does not include past
events. Additionally, this peer-on-peer harassment tends to be direct and done in front of adults,
revealing the identity of the bully and making intervention by adults easier compared to older
children.
This session is designed to look at the contrast between typical social skill developments verses
bullying, discuss the outcome in development for the victim and bully if left without intervention
and explore gender trends. Then we will review positive solutions to address the concern within
the classroom while supporting all children and families. Laura Conley, Training Specialist,
Lakeshore Learning Materials
8
Session Three/Sesión Tres:
12:30 PM – 2:00 PM
1. His Brain, Her Brain
As girls and boys grow, gender differences become more apparent. Let’s examine brain
development, hormonal influences and behavior patterns that result from these gender
influences. Neil Tift, Father Involvement Program Director, Child Crisis Center.
2. Empower Plus+: What’s it all about?
Learn about Empower PLUS+ and how your center can become involved in this national project
funded by Nemours and the Centers for Diesease Control (CDC). Bonnie Williams, Early Care and
Education Prevention Manager, Arizona Department of Health Services.
3. Introduction to Infant and Toddler Guidelines
The Introduction to the Infant and Toddler Developmental Guidelines is an overview of the
document and tips for navigating through it. The Infant and Toddler Developmental Guidelines
have been developed to provide a framework for all caregivers who may care for children ages
birth to 36 months. The Guidelines are meant to build awareness of the unique developmental
characteristics of infants and toddlers, increase awareness of quality infant and toddler
caregiving and education, and to guide intentional planning for quality learning experiences for
children in this age range. Participants will receive a copy of the Guidelines. Elizabeth Hamilton,
Early Childhood Education Program Specialist, Arizona Department of Education.
4. Transformational Play: Transformational Objects and Nature/Juego Transformacional
