ST. MATTHEW CATHOLIC CHURCH Faith, Love, Community, Service ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Fi eenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 12, 2015 ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Monsignor John Talesfore, Pastor One Notre Dame Avenue San Mateo, CA 94402 (650) 344-7622 Phone (650) 344-4830 Fax www.stmatthew-parish.org MASSES/MISAS Daily Masses/Misas Diarias: 6:30am (except Saturday), 12:05pm Saturday/Sábado: 5:00pm, 7:00pm (Español) Sunday/Domingo: 7:00am, 8:45am (Español), 10:45am, 12:30pm, 3:00pm (Chinese in the small Chapel), 5:30pm (Español) Confession/Confesiones: Monday-Friday Lunes a Viernes 5:00pm-5:30pm in the Chapel Saturday/Sábado 11:30am-12:00noon & 4:30pm-5:00pm The Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Sacrament of the Eucharist: Basic Questions and Answers Furthermore, in the Eucharistic re-presentation of Christ's eternal sacrifice before the Father, we are not simply spectators. The priest and the worshiping community are in different ways active in the Eucharistic sacrifice. The ordained priest standing at the altar represents Christ as head of the Church. All the baptized, as members of Christ's Body, share in his priesthood, as both priest and victim. The Eucharist is also the sacrifice of the Church. The Church, which is the Body and Bride of Christ, participates in the sacrificial offering of her Head and Spouse. In the Eucharist, the sacrifice of Christ becomes the sacrifice of the members of his Body who united to Christ form one sacrificial offering (cf. Catechism, no. 1368). As Christ's sacrifice is made sacramentally present, united with Christ, we offer ourselves as a sacrifice to the Father. "The whole Church exercises the role of priest and victim along with Christ, offering the Sacrifice of the Mass and itself completely offered in it" ( Mysterium Fidei, no. 31; cf. Lumen Gentium, no. 11). When the bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Christ, why do they still look and taste like bread and wine? In the celebration of the Eucharist, the glorified Christ becomes present under the appearances of bread and wine in a way that is unique, a way that is uniquely suited to the Eucharist. (Continued on page 2) St. Matthew Catholic Church 2 July 12, 2015 ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ The Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Sacrament of the Eucharist: Basic Questions and Answers (cont’d) In the Church's traditional theological language, in the act of consecration during the Eucharist the "substance" of the bread and wine is changed by the power of the Holy Spirit into the "substance" of the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. At the same time, the "accidents" or appearances of bread and wine remain. "Substance" and "accident" are here used as philosophical terms that have been adapted by great medieval theologians such as St. Thomas Aquinas in their efforts to understand and explain the faith. Such terms are used to convey the fact that what appears to be bread and wine in every way (at the level of "accidents" or physical attributes that is, what can be seen, touched, tasted, or measured) in fact is now the Body and Blood of Christ (at the level of "substance" or deepest reality). This change at the level of substance from bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ is called "transubstantiation." According to Catholic faith, we can speak of the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist because this transubstantiation has occurred (cf. Catechism, no. 1376). This is a great mystery of our faith—we can only know it from Christ's teaching given us in the Scriptures and in the Tradition of the Church. Every other change that occurs in the world involves a change in accidents or characteristics. Sometimes the accidents change while the substance remains the same. For example, when a child reaches adulthood, the characteristics of the human person change in many ways, but the adult remains the same person—the same substance. At other times, the substance and the accidents both change. For example, when a person eats an apple, the apple is incorporated into the body of that person—is changed into the body of that person. When this change of substance occurs, however, the accidents or characteristics of the apple do not remain. As the apple is changed into the body of the person, it takes on the accidents or characteristics of the body of that person. The next meeting will be on Thursday, September 3, 2015, at 7:30 p.m. in the Upstairs Conference Room in the Parish Center. All interested people are welcome to attend. Help Needed! Our St. Vincent de Paul Conference picks up food at the Lucky Supermarket at Edgewater Center in Foster City every Monday and Wednesday morning (between 9 and 11:00 a.m.). We get about 10 to 12 boxes of baked goods, prepared foods, cheeses and mixed goods, and the boxes usually do not weigh over 20 pounds. Then we weigh and record the donations in our Food Locker on the church campus. It takes about an hour and a half for the picking up, weighing and putting the food away. Training will be provided. If you are interested in helping, even if one day per month, please contact Kathryn Cross at [email protected] or (650) 291-9417. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ St. Matthew Summer Choir Returns During the Summer join the 10:45am. Those who study Sacred Scripture find this letter different from most of Paul's letters, as rather than addressing particular problems which may have arisen in a Christian community established by Paul, it develops a theology, an explanation of what it means to be a Christian. At the end of this particular reading, Paul makes reference to two important aspects of our faith and of our beliefs. St. Paul tells us that we have "believed in him (Jesus)" and that we are "sealed" with the promised Holy Spirit. Believing in Jesus, in His promises, in His redemption of us, is at the core of everything we do. This trust, this belief, is what allows us to take the steps needed to follow Him, to be His disciple, and to practice a stewardship way of living. Note that we believe first, however, and then we are sealed. Yes, we are sealed at Baptism and at Confirmation, as those represent our promises to the Lord. We do not need some assurance from God as to His good graces. By believing, by having faith and trust, we are able to be Christ's representative. It is worth recalling and repeating that well-known quote from St. Thomas Aquinas: "To one who has faith, no explanation is necessary; to one with no faith, no explanation is possible."
