NOW A WORD FROM OUR SAINTS
AND A
 MESSAGE FROM THE PASTOR 
“He induced the nobility, wherever he was, and the leisured classes, to hear Mass daily.
He himself had taken three months preparation for his own first Mass.
The practice of frequent Communion had disappeared:
Saint Cajetan restored it wherever he went.”
(Taken from “The Life of Saint Cajetan” by Giuseppe Maria Zinelli)

“I am a sinner and do not think much of myself; I have recourse to the
greatest servants of the Lord, that they may pray for you to the blessed
Christ and his Mother. But do not forget that all the Saints cannot endear
you to Christ as much as you can yourself. It is entirely up to you. If you
want Christ to love you and help you, you must love Him and always make an
effort to please Him. Do not waver in your purpose, because even if all the
Saints and every single creature should abandon you, He will always be near
you, whatever your needs.
You know, of course, that we are pilgrims in this world, on a journey to our
true home in heaven. The man who becomes proud loses his way and
rushes to death. While living here we should strive to gain eternal life. Yet
of ourselves we cannot achieve this since we have lost it through sin; but
Jesus Christ has recovered it for us. For this reason we must always be
grateful to Him and love Him. We must always obey Him, and as far as
possible remain united with Him.
He has offered Himself to be our food. How wretched is the man who knows
nothing of such a gift! To us has been given the opportunity to receive
Christ, Son of the Virgin Mary, and we refuse Him. Woe to the man who does not care enough to receive Him. My
daughter, I want what is good for myself; I beg the same for you. Now there is no other way to bring this about than
to ask the Virgin Mary constantly to come to you with her glorious Son. Be bold! Ask her to give you her Son, Who in
the Blessed Sacrament of the Altar is truly the Food of your soul. Readily will she give Him to you, still more readily
will He come to you, giving you the strength to make your way fearlessly through this dark wood. In it large numbers
of our enemies lie in wait, but they cannot reach us if they see us relying on such powerful help.
Nor, my child, must you receive Jesus Christ simply as a means to further your own plans; I want you to surrender to
Him, that He may welcome you and, as your divine Saviour, do to you and in you whatever He wills. This is what I
want, this is what I beg of you, this, as far as I can, is what I compel you to do.”
(Taken from “A Letter by Saint Cajetan”)

Much can be learned from the lives of the Saints and so, because those lives are very rarely
presented to us on the big screen, in the classroom, or at the newsstand, the Our Holy
Redeemer Sunday Bulletin – on an almost weekly basis – present readers with “Now a
Word from Our Saints”. It is my hope that readers will be inspired by what they read and
in turn, put it into practice on the Way to becoming Saints themselves. (Be sure to turn the
pages and discover words from two of our most recently Canonized Saints: Pope Saint John
XXIII and Pope Saint John Paul II).
NOW A WORD FROM OUR SAINTS
BY: POPE SAINT JOHN PAUL II
ENCYCLICAL LETTER
VERITATIS SPLENDOR
ADDRESSED BY THE SUPREME PONTIFF
POPE JOHN PAUL II TO ALL THE BISHOPS OF THE
CATHOLIC CHURCH REGARDING CERTAIN FUNDAMENTAL
QUESTIONS OF THE CHURCH'S MORAL TEACHING
(Continued from the 3 August Sunday Bulletin)
"There is only one who is good" (Mt 19:17)
9. Jesus says: "Why do you ask Me about what is good? There is only One Who is good. If you wish to enter into life,
keep the commandments" (Mt 19:17). In the versions of the Evangelists Mark and Luke the question is phrased in this
way: "Why do you call Me good? No one is good but God alone" (Mk 10:18; cf. Lk 18:19).
Before answering the question, Jesus wishes the young man to have a clear idea of why he asked his question. The
"Good Teacher" points out to him–and to all of us–that the answer to the question, "What good must I do to have
eternal life?" can only be found by turning one's mind and heart to the "One" Who is good: "No one is good but God
alone" (Mk 10:18; cf. Lk 18:19). Only God can answer the question about what is good, because He is the Good itself.
To ask about the good, in fact, ultimately means to turn towards God, the fullness of goodness. Jesus shows that the
young man's question is really a religious question, and that the goodness that attracts and at the same time obliges
man has its source in God, and indeed is God Himself. God alone is worthy of being loved "with all one's heart, and with
all one's soul, and with all one's mind" (Mt 22:37). He is the source of man's happiness. Jesus brings the question about
morally good action back to its religious foundations, to the acknowledgment of God, Who alone is goodness, fullness of
life, the final end of human activity, and perfect happiness.
10. The Church, instructed by the Teacher's words, believes that man, made in the image of the Creator, redeemed by
the Blood of Christ and made holy by the presence of the Holy Spirit, has as the ultimate purpose of his life to live "for
the praise of God's glory" (cf. Eph 1:12), striving to make each of his actions reflect the splendour of that glory. "Know,
then, O beautiful soul, that you are the image of God", writes Saint Ambrose. "Know that you are the glory of God (1 Cor
11:7). Hear how you are His glory. The Prophet says: Your knowledge has become too wonderful for me (cf. Ps. 138:6,
Vulg.). That is to say, in my work your majesty has become more wonderful; in the counsels of men your wisdom is
exalted. When I consider myself, such as I am known to you in my secret thoughts and deepest emotions, the mysteries
of your knowledge are disclosed to me. Know then, O man, your greatness, and be vigilant".
What man is and what he must do becomes clear as soon as God reveals Himself. The Decalogue is based on these
words: "I am the Lord your God, Who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of …" (Ex 20:2-3). In the
"ten words" of the Covenant with Israel, and in the whole Law, God makes Himself known and acknowledged as the One
Who "alone is good"; the One Who despite man's sin remains the "model" for moral action, in accordance with His
command, "You shall be holy; for I the Lord your God am holy" (Lev 19:2); as the One Who, faithful to His love for man,
gives him his Law (cf. Ex 19:9-24 and 20:18-21) in order to restore man's original and peaceful harmony with the Creator
and with all creation, and, what is more, to draw him into His divine love: "I will walk among you, and will be your God,
and you shall be My people" (Lev 26:12).
The moral life presents itself as the response due to the many gratuitous initiatives taken by God out of love for man. It
is a response of love, according to the statement made in Deuteronomy about the fundamental commandment: "Hear,
O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord; and you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul,
and with all your might. And these words which I command you this day shall be upon your heart; and you shall teach
them diligently to your children" (Dt 6:4-7). Thus the moral life, caught up in the gratuitousness of God's love, is called
to reflect His glory: "For the one who loves God it is enough to be pleasing to the One Whom e loves: for no greater
reward should be sought than that love itself; charity in fact is of God in such a way that God Himself is charity".

NOW A WORD FROM OUR SAINTS
BY: POPE SAINT JOHN XXIII
AD PETRI CATHEDRAM
ENCYCLICAL OF POPE JOHN XXIII
ON TRUTH, UNITY AND PEACE, IN A SPIRIT OF CHARITY
29 June 1959
(The full text of Ad Petri Cathedram can be found at:

(Continued from the 3 August Sunday Bulletin)
Christian Charity
49. But all will come out well if the social teaching of the Catholic Church is applied as it should be to the problem.
Everyone then must "strive to preserve in himself and to arouse in others, be they of high or low degree, the queen
and mistress of all the virtues, charity. The salvation we hope for is to be expected primarily from a great outpouring
of charity. We refer to that Christian charity which is a principle synthesizing the entire gospel. That charity is always
ready to spend itself in the interest of others and is the surest remedy against worldly pride and immoderate selfesteem. Saint Paul the Apostle described the characteristics of this virtue when he said: 'Charity is patient, is kind; is
not self-seeking; bears with all things, endures all things; (1 Cor. 13.4-7).”
Unity within the Family
50. We have called nations, their rulers, and all classes of society to harmonious unity. Now we sincerely urge families
to achieve and strengthen this unity within themselves.
51. For unless peace, unity, and concord are present in domestic society, how can they exist in civil society?
52. This harmonious unity which should exist within the family circle rises from the holiness and indissolubility of
Christian marriage. It is the basis of much of the order, progress, and prosperity of civil society.
53. Within the family, the father stands in God's place. He must lead and guide the rest by his authority and the
example of his good life.
54. The mother, on the other hand, should form her children firmly and graciously by the mildness of her manner and
by her virtue.
55. Together the parents should carefully rear their children, God's most precious gift, to an upright and religious life.
56. Children must honor, obey, and love their parents. They must give their parents not only solace but also concrete
assistance if it is needed.
57. The charity which burned in the household at Nazareth should be an inspiration for every family. All the Christian
virtues should flourish in the family, unity should thrive, and the example of its virtuous living should shine brightly.
58. We earnestly pray God to prevent any damage to this valuable, beneficial, and necessary union. The Christian
family is a sacred institution. If it totters, if the norms which the divine Redeemer laid down for it are rejected or
ignored, then the very foundations of the state tremble; civil society stands betrayed and in peril. Everyone suffers.

NEWS FROM THE DE LA SALLE SCHOOL
(516) 379-8660
During the summer months we have the opportunity to address some projects that a
building full of students would make a bit more difficult.
Among the work being undertaken during these months is the installation and calibration of four more SMARTBoards. A
generous donation from Columbia Grammar & Preparatory School provided us with these interactive and engaging
educational tools. The same source also gifted us with a classroom set of Chromebooks which will facilitate the expansion
of the implementation of Google Apps for Education software which we introduced last year.
Another improvement that is taking place involves the floor and the wall of the exterior vestibule at our entrance. Thanks
to Father Arcoleo for being a good landlord and tending to this need.
Our cleaning company will be on site to do a thorough job dusting, scrubbing, washing, and tidying up our bathrooms,
classrooms, corridors, and office space. Finally, the floor cleaners will be in to strip, wash, wax, and polish all the floors.
We will be ready to welcome the students back at the end of the month!

“After the fire there was a tiny
whispering sound” (See 1 Kings 19:9-13).
Someone has said that the language
God can best be heard is silence and
this is so true. God speaks to us often in
the silence of our hearts, but we have
to be attentive to His Voice, because as
it was the case with the prophet Elijah,
that Voice comes as a “tiny whispering
sound.”
Remember
the
movie
Pinocchio? Pinocchio is surrounded by so many sounds and so
many temptations that he cannot hear the soft voice of tiny
Jiminy Cricket. As a result he gets in plenty of trouble that
could have been avoided. It happens also to us. That’s why
we all need to learn the way of silence. We need to turn off
all the worldly noise that is constantly surrounding us. We
need to pay attention to our hearts. What is God telling us
there? We must listen and then act accordingly. Sometimes
God may talk strongly, but most of the times it is that tiny
whispering sound. May we never fail to pay heed to the Voice
of God! In this we can follow the example of Mary who kept
her heart opened to the Voice of God.

FAITH AND THE ROMAN MISSAL
NOW A WORD FROM VENERABLE ARCHBISHOP FULTON J. SHEEN
“In this doctrine of the Assumption, the Church meets the despair of the world in a second way. She affirms the
beauty of life as against death. When wars, sex, and sin multiply the discords of men, and death threatens on
every side, the Church bids us lift up our hearts to the life that has the immortality of the Life that nourished it.
Feuerbach said that a man is what he eats. He was more right than he knew. Eat the food of the earth, and one
dies; eat the Eucharist, and one lives eternally. She, who is the mother of the Eucharist, escapes the
decomposition of death.”
(Taken from The World’s First Love, pp. 137-138)
THE ASSUMPTION OF
THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY
15 AUGUST
COLLECT
Almighty ever-living God,
Who assumed the Immaculate Virgin Mary,
the Mother of Your Son,
body and soul into heavenly glory,
grant, we pray,
that, always attentive to the things that are above,
we may merit to the sharers of her glory.
Through our Lord, Jesus Christ, Your Son,
Who lives and reigns with You,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever. Amen
“Mary was not a rose in which Divinity reposed for a
time; she was the canal through which God came to us.
Mary could no longer live without the Dream she
brought forth, nor could the Dream live without her,
body and soul. Her love of God bore her upward; His
love of His Mother lifted her upward. Our Lord could
not forget the cradle in which He lay. In the
Annunciation, the angel said: “The Lord is with Thee.”
In the Assumption: “Mary is with the Lord.” Her
Assumption is the guarantee that one’s prayers to her
will be answered. The Son is on the right hand of the
Father; she is on the right hand of the Son.”

Necesitamos prestar atención a nuestros corazones.
¿Qué nos está Dios diciendo ahí? Tenemos que escuchar y entonces obrar en armonía con lo que hemos oído. A veces

KEEPING
THE
FAITH
During the fourth watch
of the night, Jesus came
toward the disciples
walking on the sea. When
the disciples saw Him
walking on the sea they
were terrified. “It is a
ghost,” they said, and
they cried out in fear.
At once Jesus spoke to
them, “Take courage, it
is I; do not be afraid.”
Saint Matthew XIV: 25-27
