Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time
THE WIND AND THE SEA
Living along the shores of Lake Superior—the “big lake,” as the locals call it—you can often hear the advice,
“Respect the lake; don’t take it for granted.” People who know Lake Superior respect its power and watch out for its
many moods. Sunken ships and boats crushed into kindling are testimonies to what the lake can do.
The readings of this Sunday evoke our memories of the lake, of the mighty Mississippi River, or of the ocean
itself. Who but God can control these mighty waters and set limits to their advance? The lake
described in today’s Gospel was a body of water subject to sudden storms and churned into
dangerous waves by terrible winds.
But these mighty agents are subject to God. The sailor and the fisher all respect the water. Even more, they respect the awesome power of the Maker of wind and sea. Copyright © J. S.
¿QUIEN

Physician-Assisted Suicide? There Are Better Alternatives!
Two weeks ago the California State Senate passed a bill permitting physician assisted suicide. This
legislation is now before the State Assembly. Its provisions do violence to the sacredness of life.
Because of this the bishops of California along with many other groups, especially those assisting
disabled persons, strongly oppose it.
The three Santa Clarita parishes are blessed to have Doctor Glenn Komatsu, a preeminent expert on
palliative care and dying with grace and dignity, speaking to us about the constructive and moral alternatives to this legislation. Doctor Komatsu did post-doctoral training at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute
of Harvard University, specializing in palliative care (which focuses on relieving pain and making
patients comfortable). He has taught at several medical schools including the University of Hawaii,
the University of California, Irvine, UCLA, and Harvard.
His presentation is on Thursday, June 25, at 7:00 p.m. at the St. Kateri Tekawitha Parish hall. We
urge parishioners to take advantage of his wisdom and come and hear Doctor Komatsu in order to
form our own consciences and exercise our citizenship faithfully.

Religious Education News
12 Sunday of Ordinary Time – Gospel of Mark 4: 35-41
th
The disciples are in awe of Christ’s ability to control nature. In which ways are
we in awe of the work our earthly fathers do? How can we learn to put faith in
our dads as the disciples placed their trust in Christ?
VIRTUS- SAFEGUARD THE CHILDREN TRAINING IS TOMORROW. MONDAY, JUNE 22 FOR TWO
SESSIONS: 9AM AND 6PM. If you plan to participate in church ministries (liturgical, education, youth and/or Boy
Scouts) you must be certified. This is 3-hour mandatory class. Certification is good for 4 years. Participants should
arrive 10 minutes before class time. Classes are held in Renehan Hall.
Vacation Bible School is July 6th-10th! Don’t miss the opportunity to
have your children join in on the fun! Cost is $30 and includes daily
snack and a t-shirt. Register at the R.E. office. This is a fantastic
way for children to learn more about the Gospels.
Registration for 2015-2016 classes is NOW OPEN!
Enrollment Period Ends on July 24th
The Office of Religious Education offers classes for children in preschool-8th grade.
The Sacramental Program is two years and prepares students for receiving the sacraments of Reconciliation and Holy
Eucharist. Students who have completed the sacraments are encouraged to continue in their faith formation. The
upper grades instruct children in scripture readings, sacred Catholic traditions and doctrine. Junior High classes focus
on morality in today’s society, Catholic Social Justice and scripture readings. Additionally, junior high students participate in community service projects.
Knowledge and understanding of one’s faith is key to living a fulfilling spiritual life.
New Families: You need to bring your child/children original baptismal certificate and be registered at St. Clare’s
Parish for priority enrollment.
Returning Families: Make sure your family’s account is up-to-date in order to process the registration. Extra
registration packets are available in the office.
Join the Ministry of Religious Education!
We are looking for a few good people who are looking to step out of their comfort zone (in a church pew) and
step in front of a classroom of eager children. Children teach us, as much as we teach them. Share the Good
News with an open audience which is ready to explore their prayer life, learn about Jesus through scripture
readings and be creative in expressing their love for God and family.
Becoming a catechist requires: An appointment with D.R.E., Nancy Medina, call 661.252.6950 or email
[email protected] / Enroll in a Virtus Safeguard the Children class this summer / Fingerprinting / Availability to attend special classes and/or trainings during the year / Open-mind & heart so the Holy
Spirit can teach the children through you / Desire to get involved at a deeper level in our community of faith /
Like children & possess a good sense of humor!

From the Prayer of the Archdiocese of the Military
Almighty God and Father, look with love upon our men and women in uniform and protect them in their time of
need. Give them health and stability and allow them to return to their loved ones whole and unshaken. Be with
their families and sustain them in these uncertain times. Hear us as we present our prayers to You through Christ
our Lord. Amen
“God’s Time Will Come”
Are you suffering because someone dear to you
has stopped practicing the faith or has left the
Church altogether? If so, St. Clare’s has a prayer
group which meets in the Church every Friday at
7:30 pm. We begin with the celebration of the
Mass and complete with devotions specifically for
the intentions of bringing our loved ones back into
the active participation of the faith.
Please join us in lifting our voices in prayer.
There is an A.A. Men’s Stag group meeting on
Thursday night at 6:30pm in the St. Clare Center. The
meetings are taking place at the Camp Plenty entrance.
(when you pull in the driveway off Camp Plenty, the
St. Clare Room of the St. Clare Center is the first door
on the right. )
Pornography Addiction?
Most men who struggle with pornography suffer silently while
it destroys their life. They think, "There is no way I can tell
anyone about this - especially in church." and so they sit in
church week after week withering away in secret shame. Porn
use is addictive and progressive, and it destroys men and their
families. The sad part is that most wait until they get caught
and the consequences catch up to them before reaching out for
help.
In the battle against lust, isolation is death! Keeping the problem inside only keeps the man in bondage. We need others to
help us in this battle. If you struggle with this problem, we
have a safe place for you to meet with other men who struggle
with the same issues.
For more information, please call Chris at 661-993-1322.
(For reasons of confidentiality, information about this group
will only be given to those men who seek to join)
