St. Clare Parish 19606 Calla Way • Santa Clarita, CA 91351 REV. OLIN MAYFIELD, PASTOR Rev. Malcolm Ambrose, Associate June 21, 2015 Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time THE WIND AND THE SEA Living along the shores of Lake Superior—the “big lake,” as the locals call it—you can often hear the advice, “Respect the lake; don’t take it for granted.” People who know Lake Superior respect its power and watch out for its many moods. Sunken ships and boats crushed into kindling are testimonies to what the lake can do. The readings of this Sunday evoke our memories of the lake, of the mighty Mississippi River, or of the ocean itself. Who but God can control these mighty waters and set limits to their advance? The lake described in today’s Gospel was a body of water subject to sudden storms and churned into dangerous waves by terrible winds. But these mighty agents are subject to God. The sailor and the fisher all respect the water. Even more, they respect the awesome power of the Maker of wind and sea. Copyright © J. S. ¿QUIEN ES ESTE, A QUIEN HASTA EL VIENTO Y EL VIENTO Y EL MAR EL MAR OBEDECEN ? Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. Mailing Address: 27341 Camp Plenty Rd. M H Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time SAINT CLARE PARISH Page 3 Physician-Assisted Suicide? There Are Better Alternatives! Two weeks ago the California State Senate passed a bill permitting physician assisted suicide. This legislation is now before the State Assembly. Its provisions do violence to the sacredness of life. Because of this the bishops of California along with many other groups, especially those assisting disabled persons, strongly oppose it. The three Santa Clarita parishes are blessed to have Doctor Glenn Komatsu, a preeminent expert on palliative care and dying with grace and dignity, speaking to us about the constructive and moral alternatives to this legislation. Doctor Komatsu did post-doctoral training at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute of Harvard University, specializing in palliative care (which focuses on relieving pain and making patients comfortable). He has taught at several medical schools including the University of Hawaii, the University of California, Irvine, UCLA, and Harvard. His presentation is on Thursday, June 25, at 7:00 p.m. at the St. Kateri Tekawitha Parish hall. We urge parishioners to take advantage of his wisdom and come and hear Doctor Komatsu in order to form our own consciences and exercise our citizenship faithfully. THIS IS JUST TODAY! AND THE REST OF THE WEEK (See the rest of the pages for even more!) FOOD DRIVE If you have forgotten groceries for the Food Pantry, they will accept monetary donations. Hear us as we present our prayers to You through Christ our Lord. Amen “God’s Time Will Come” Are you suffering because someone dear to you has stopped practicing the faith or has left the Church altogether? If so, St. Clare’s has a prayer group which meets in the Church every Friday at 7:30 pm. We begin with the celebration of the Mass and complete with devotions specifically for the intentions of bringing our loved ones back into the active participation of the faith. Please join us in lifting our voices in prayer. There is an A.A. Men’s Stag group meeting on Thursday night at 6:30pm in the St. Clare Center. The meetings are taking place at the Camp Plenty entrance. (when you pull in the driveway off Camp Plenty, the St. Clare Room of the St. Clare Center is the first door on the right. ) Pornography Addiction? Most men who struggle with pornography suffer silently while it destroys their life. They think, "There is no way I can tell anyone about this - especially in church." and so they sit in church week after week withering away in secret shame. Porn use is addictive and progressive, and it destroys men and their families. The sad part is that most wait until they get caught and the consequences catch up to them before reaching out for help. In the battle against lust, isolation is death! Keeping the problem inside only keeps the man in bondage. We need others to help us in this battle. If you struggle with this problem, we have a safe place for you to meet with other men who struggle with the same issues. For more information, please call Chris at 661-993-1322. (For reasons of confidentiality, information about this group will only be given to those men who seek to join) Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time SAINT CLARE PARISH Page 9 PRAY FOR THE SICK OF OUR PARISH Sharon Bender; Aurora Gaor; Mary Ann Griffin; Dora Grandolfo; Nancy Giacomi; Justin Stradley; Rosie Ambrose; Brian Grogan; Maura Tevere; Michael Tevere; Jim Reick; Josh Hoover; Nikita Puyat; Desmond Anderson; Shriley Fromberg; Mario Giacomi; Alex Aguino; Rose Sordetto; Juliana Serrano; Rene Espinoza; Nicci Amendola; Chris Nard; Humberto Ambriz; Cecile Ceurvorst; Dorothy Simon; Emily Hernandez; George Samolis; Daisy Cofsky; Kevin Schallert; Judy Mc Cray; Jocelyn Barbara Amatong; Roger Blackwell; Evelyn Marsh; James Magnuson; Jorge Lara; Oscar Mariano; John Rissler; Kathleen O’Carroll; Bethany Kerr; Courtney Moe; Michael Brothers; Gabriel Evan Mowery; Guillermo Mascorro; Denise Cockrell; Maria Lozada; Glenda Yakel; Pedro Solorio; Carmel Brockman; Hector Loera; Pauline Varner; Mary Tersigni; Rick Malinowsky; Roy Stradley; Ken Wheeler; John Springer; Maria Gaeta; Ernest W.
