I Corinthians 1:18-31
El mensaje de la muerte de Cristo en la cruz parece una tontería a los

The message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing,
but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written,
“I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the discernment of the
discerning I will thwart.” Where is the one who is wise? Where is the
scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the
wisdom of the world? For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did
not know God through wisdom, God decided, through the foolishness
of our proclamation, to save those who believe. For Jews demand signs
and Greeks desire wisdom, but we proclaim Christ crucified, a
stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those who
are the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the
wisdom of God. For God’s foolishness is wiser than human wisdom,
and God’s weakness is stronger than human strength. Consider your
own call, brothers and sisters: not many of you were wise by human
standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. But
God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose
what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low
and despised in the world, things that are not, to reduce to nothing
things that are, so that no one might boast in the presence of God. He is
the source of your life in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from
God, and righteousness and sanctification and redemption, in order
that, as it is written, “Let the one who boasts, boast in the LORD.”

and its mission. Supply the things that are wanting in it, and strengthen

call, that we who preach Christ crucified may show forth the power and

in mind the needs of those less fortunate than ourselves, that we who

We thank you for your faithful servant Murray whose time as Bishop
of the Pacifica Synod is coming to an end. Grant him new opportunities
for service and enjoyment:

in your Church on earth who now rest from their labors, especially
Bishop Samir Kafity and those most dear to us, whom we name in our

It is right and good that we should come together as brothers and

Son, Jesus Christ our Savior. In him we are called into his ministry.
Through him we are given the example of your great love for the world.
By his Spirit we are given the strength and courage to serve and love as
he taught us to do.
And so we join the saints and angels in proclaiming your glory,
as we sing,

The Bishop continues, saying
Glory and honor and praise to you, holy and living God. To redeem
your creation you favored Mary, a daughter of your chosen people
Israel, to become the holy mother of Jesus, your Christ for all people.
He humbled himself in every way, living and dining with people who
were outcast as well as with those who were fortunate, touching the
sick and unclean to heal them, welcoming sinners and forgiving all who
turned from their sin. He withheld nothing, accepting death upon a
cross.
Yet you broke through the powers of the world and raised him to new
and unending life. By his resurrection you open the way for us to live
in the new creation. By your gift of the Holy Comforter you unite us in
love, equipping us to do what he has done, empowering us to love one
another as he loved us.
And so, Father, we bring you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy

On the night he was betrayed he took bread, said the blessing, broke the
bread, and gave it to his friends, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body,
which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”
After supper, he took the cup of wine, gave thanks, and said, “Drink
this, all of you. This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed
for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink
it, do this for the remembrance of me.”
In him, we offer our affirmation of thanks and praise,

Father, we now celebrate the memorial of your Son. By means of this
holy bread and cup, we show forth the sacrifice of his death, and

Almighty Father,

THE BLESSING OF THE OILS
Facing the people, the Bishop addresses them in these words:
Dear friends in Christ: In the beginning, the Spirit of God
hovered over the creation; and throughout history, God, by the
gift of the Holy Spirit, has empowered his people to serve him.
As a sign of that gift, the priests and kings of Israel were
anointed with oil; and our Lord Jesus was himself anointed
with the Holy Spirit at his Baptism as the Christ, God’s own
Messiah. At baptism Christians are likewise anointed by that
same Spirit to empower them for God’s service. Let us now set
apart this oil to be the sign of that anointing. Let us pray.

The Bishop places a hand on the vessels of Oil of Chrism for Baptism and prays:
Eternal Father, whose blessed Son was anointed by the Holy
Spirit to be the Savior and servant of all, we pray you to
consecrate this oil, that those who are sealed with it may share
in the royal priesthood of Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns
with you and the Holy Spirit, for ever and ever. Amen.
The Bishop then places a hand on the vessels of Oil for the Anointing of the Sick and
prays:
O Lord, Holy Father, giver of health and salvation; send your
Holy Spirit to sanctify this oil; that as your holy apostles
anointed many that were sick and healed them, so may those
who in faith and repentance receive this holy unction be made
whole; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns
with you and the Holy Spirit one God, for ever and ever.
Amen.

Almighty God, we pray you graciously to behold this your family
