Grotesco
A pesar de ser una de las escritoras más populares
de Japón, el estilo de Natsuo Kirino no es apto
para todos los públicos. Lo más habitual es localizar sus novelas en el apartado de novela negra.
No obstante, los lectores que decidan adentrarse
en el mundo de Kirino deben estar avisados de
que encontrarán mucho más. Y no todo agradable. Grotesco, una de sus últimas obras editadas
en Japón, es la narración en primera persona de
una joven que rememora la relación con su hermana menor, una prostituta de Tokio asesinada
por un psicópata. Una violenta novela negra en la

Although she is one of the most popular writers in Japan, Natsuo Kirino’s
style is not to everyone’s taste. Her books are usually classified as detective
novels, but readers entering Kirino’s world should be warned they will find
a great deal more there, and not all of it is pleasant. Grotesque, one of her
most recent books to be published in Japan, is a first-person narrative about
a girl who recalls her relationship with her younger sister, a Tokyo prostitute
murdered by a psychopath. Especially important in this violent crime novel

Los matices de los vinos de Jerez
Dice el refrán popular: “Vino de Jerez para antes de comer, comiendo y
después de comer”. Esto se explica por el amplio abanico de variedades, que
va desde los generosos secos (como el fino, la manzanilla, el amontillado, el
oloroso y el palo cortado) hasta el más cercano a un licor, Pedro Ximénez.
Gracias a su delicado aroma y a las notas de hierbas y almendras, el fino
es ideal para el aperitivo. La manzanilla, con un matiz mucho más salino
gracias al cultivo de la uva palomino cerca del mar, acompaña a mariscos y
pescados. El oloroso y el amontillado son perfectos para el momento central
de una cena o almuerzo; el primero va muy bien con guisos de carne y caza,
y el segundo, con pescados como el atún. Con la carne también armoniza
el palo cortado. Pedro Ximénez es perfecto para cerrar con postres, helados,
chocolate e incluso quesos.
The nuances of sherry
As a popular saying goes, “sherry wine is for before
lunch, during lunch and after lunch.” The explanation
lies in the wide range of sherry varieties, which go from
dry fortified wines like fino, manzanilla, amontillado,
oloroso and palo cortado to the liqueur-like Pedro
Ximénez. Thanks to its delicate bouquet with notes
of herbs and almonds, fino sherry makes an ideal
aperitif. Manzanilla, more saline in quality because
the Palomino grapes are grown close to the sea,
accompanies fish and seafood to perfection. Oloroso
and amontillado go extremely well with the main
course of a lunch or dinner. The first is particularly suited
to meat and game dishes, and the second to fish like
tuna. Palo cortado harmonises with meat too. Pedro
Ximénez is perfect for ending a meal along with
desserts, ice-cream, chocolate and even cheese.

El chef Blumenthal y su nuevo Dinner
Inspirado en la tradición gastronómica
británica, el cocinero inglés Heston Blumenthal ha abierto recientemente un
nuevo restaurante en el Mandarín Oriental de Londres. Se trata de Dinner (www.
