Countdown to Pope Francis arrival to the US: 94 days!

s you remember, the theme of the readings
for the "Cycle B Year" is "struggle." The
struggle in this week's readings is with fear.
In the first reading, Job's fear had been that he would
die not having had a chance to "plead his case" with
God...but God appeared to him, and then his fear became that he wouldn't be able to make sense of it all.
Paul's fear is that his congregation will not respect him
like they respect the "apostles" who had "known and
talked with and ate with and followed Jesus." The disciples in the storm are afraid that Jesus (God) won't
protect them in trouble, or be there "in their perishing."
Those sound like pretty "modern fears." Who of us
hasn't wondered, like those disciples of old, if God
really cares? Or, even, if He really "is?" Who hasn't
feared, like Job, that our lives will be without meaning? Who of us hasn't feared, like Paul, that we won't
find respect and love? What the readings of the weekend tell us is that our fears are normal--we are, after
all, human! But, MOST of our lives, like most of the
lives of the people in these readings, are spent in great
trust and gratitude. So, when the fears come, they
come--don't despair--for they will also ebb away and
be replaced with trust and joy. May our lives be filled
with trust and joy this week.

del Ciclo B es de la “lucha.” Esta semana vemos la lucha del miedo. En la
primera lectura, el miedo de Job es de morir sin primer ir ante Dios para dar cuentas de su vida… de
pronto Dios se le aparece, y ahora tiene miedo de
que no se va a poder expresar claramente. El miedo
de Pablo es de que su congregación no lo fueran a
respetar como a los apóstoles quienes conocían, comían y hablaban con Jesús. El miedo de los discípulos es que Dios no estuviera presente para ayudarles
durante la tormenta. Estos miedos suenan muy modernos. ¿Quiénes de nosotros no se ha preguntado si
en verdad Dios se preocupa? ¿O que si en verdad
está ahí? ¿Quiénes de nosotros no ha tenido miedo
como Pablo de no ser respetados o amados? ¡Las
lecturas nos están diciendo que nuestros miedos son
normales, puesto que somos humanos! Pero, MUCHAS de nuestras vidas, como las vidas de las personas en las lecturas, viven con confianza y con gratitud. Entonces, cuando vengan los miedos, deja que
vengan y no te desesperes, más bien transformarlos
en confianza y alegría. Que nuestras vidas estén llenas de confianza y de alegría esta semana.

offers the opportunity to experience God’s unconditional love and acceptance to all who come into
contact with it.
T
oday's readings speak of the power of
God in visible ways. The reading
from the Book of Job is taken from
the latter part of the book where we see the power
of God and how Job learns who is really "boss".
The other readings also try to teach us that God is
so much more than we can imagine. We as humans need to humble ourselves before our God
and try to live in God's example. God loves us
and does not use God's power to intimidate, but
rather to build our confidence that no matter what
trouble besets us, no matter the storm we find
ourselves in, those who are disciples of Jesus can
have confidence in his power to rescue us.
Let us take comfort in this lesson and live
our lives in imitation of God.

as lecturas del día nos presentan el poder de Dios de una manera que lo podemos ver. En la lectura de Job, vemos al
poder de Dios y cómo se da cuenta Job quién es el
verdadero “patrón.” Las otras lecturas también
nos muestran que Dios es mucho más de lo que
nos imaginamos. Como humanos, debemos de ser
humildes ante nuestro Dios y vivir siguiendo el
ejemplo de Dios. Dios nos ama y su poder no intimida. Más bien nos da la confianza que no importa los problemas que tengamos, no importa en
qué tormenta nos encontremos, quienes son discípulos de Jesús pueden tener la confianza en su poder salvador.
Espero las lecturas les dé ánimo en seguir
adelante imitando a Dios.

distributed to the children
in mid August. Please
save this to refer to when
you go to purchase the
school supplies.
