ESD 113 Sound to Harbor Head Start/ECEAP Procedure 908 Page 1 of 2 Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease Exposure Letter Date: Dear Parent, Your child has been exposed to Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease at the Head Start/ECEAP Center. This is a common illness caused by a virus. Complications are quite rare. The signs or symptoms of this virus are sores or ulcer-like canker sores in the mouth, on the gums and on the sides of the tongue. Along with this will be a blistery-type rash on the palms of the hands and the soles of the feet. Sometimes there is a rash on the buttocks, too. A fever, headache or sore throat may also be present. The illness usually appears 3-5 days after exposure and lasts 7-10 days. If your child has these symptoms, please call your medical provider. Viruses are not treatable, but there may be some medication available that would make your child feels more comfortable. As with all viruses, frequent hand washing is essential to controlling the spread of disease. Your child may attend school if he/she does not have a sore throat or fever, and feels well enough to participate fully in all classroom activities. Please notify us if your child will be absent. If you have questions, please contact me at the center, or contact the Health Services Staff at (360) 4646800 for Mason/Thurston Counties or at (360) 532-5001 for Grays Harbor County. Thank you.
