55 The Old Soldier Action Acción. The close fit between image and code within the narrative bubble engenders the collective autism of television news. Meanings are not negotiated; they are imposed. Escape from the bubble is not to ‘reality,’ but to another image-realm. The promiscuity of the image allows for leaks. The image that refuses to stay put in the context of this narration is disruptive. The image-world is the surface of globalization. It is our shared world. Impoverished, dim, superficial, this image surface is all we have of shared experience. Otherwise we do not share a world. The task is not to get behind the image surface but to stretch it, enrich it, give it definition, give it time. A new culture opens here upon the line. Susan Buck Morss Beatriz Lecuona and Óscar Hernández belong to a generation of Canaries artists who, halfway between centuries, found in painting a suitable process to express their cultural concerns. As this decision regarding process fell within the context of the generalised condemnation of painting as a “little advanced” medium, this retinal characteristic (not so much because of the painting they did as for how it was perceived) tended to overshadow the fact that (the decision of) its practice fell within a more complex context, and a good part of the critics focused on this obvious characteristic and were satisfied with condemning or welcoming their anachronism. It would be untrue to state that painting for these artists was a medium, just like any other, to approach the problems they were interested in; in their case, it was not just a means but a theme, a problem and even a sign of distinction (to avoid saying a sign of identity). Nonetheless, their true interest was elsewhere: a group of artists who (no longer) felt forced to take on local tradition but had no need to welcome metropolitan modes, felt individually and personally involved in the task of creating images which were no longer a temporary consequence of history nor were they a product of geographical space, but the result of personal decisions to which rather than identifying themselves with, felt these decissions identified them. In a world where coherence had lost its sociocultural consideration in favour of difference (and identity) they felt they had 118 chosen a formally breaking profession, though classical at the same time, in the Perhaps their main difference with (the genre of) painting could have to do sense that it forced them to understand biography in narrative terms; that is, with the little willingness these artists have to work around the commonplace to include their actions, productions and discriminations in a story that would of the supposed weakness of the image (of the artistic image, that is, to give them sense. They dealt with this personal concern –certainly anachronistic make it clear, of painting as metonymy of the artistic image “per excellence”). in a world increasingly in demand of flexible, variable and adaptable Though, as we have pointed out, they share with their generation a taste for personalities- politically, that is to say, as a collective problem which did not anachronism and even a considerable morbid disposition to take on defeat stem from the classical intellectual decision of making up a group of shared beforehand; their own project prevents them from deceiving themselves in sensitivities but from the perception of a de facto relationship- generally this regard. However fashionable it is to state rhetorically –that is, strategically- based on the mutual interest in the way each of them managed to get out of their jam- originating in a shared juncture. This juncture was marked by the maximum expansion of the empire of nihilism: creating images fell within a lack of values which was perceived without any nostalgia at all and as the logical consequence of the necessary dismantling of cultural dogmas (hence socio-political) to which art had served for years. Painting was that: the cultural remains of a voluntary shipwreck which reminded us of incontrovertible and untenable certainties in sharp contrast with a world where the image had attained its widest scope (human lives are shaped and modelled by them as never before) alongside minimum depth (our imagery is as determining as the opposite, the aspiration to be memorable is in the very nature of the artistic image. Phrases such as “ephemeral art”, “conceptual art”, “immaterial art” or “relational art” are but oxymoron which, like every language trope, want viewers to solve these contradictions in terms by discovering which cultural value is to be deduced from the use of ephemeral, conceptual, immaterial or relational processes to generate images which are not only pregnant but memorable and “re-memorable”, recurring, revisitable, and referential, materially landmarks, in general, apart from being pictorial (whether these “paintings” are made with a photo camera, notes on a piece of contingent, as influential as fatuous, untranscendible as insignificant). With paper, registering, recording or installation of tracks or literary constructions these remains, youths who had made the picturesque decision of becoming of the mental image of an event, which even end up, in the case of video, artists –that is, of working in the sphere of the image and against its historical summed up in a bi-dimensional framed icon, that is, temporarily removed from dynamics, at the core of the problem but from the periphery of the usual the perceptive continuum). way to approach it- were trying to build something similar to an intellectual Art may not be produced but, if it is, it will be through flirting with eternity. habitat that would allow them to lodge –not to settled down, though- in their And contemporaneous art may not be produced but, if it is, this flirting decisions. will have anachronistic tinges for the nature of art will be in contrast with Lecuona and Hernández were nearly the only artists of their generation who, the perfect adaptation of the contemporary image to the present and its sharing almost completely this intellectual field did not, oddly enough, practise transience nature, with its natural readiness to turn into chewing-gum to the (in the most literal sense of the word) painting. Nonetheless, paradoxically too, eye, rather more interested in producing practical returns than in “leaving their they perhaps are the ones who have most insistently kept inquiring about the song in the memory of man” (returns which, at all events, are also linked with problems posed by this practice. Whilst most of their generation who are still the power of the image, even though this is now pursued through showiness painting have progressively become more interested in the iconological sense rather than eternity or timelessness). Hence the works by Lecuona and of what they depict rather than in the manner in which they do it, in Lecuona Hernández ‘love subtle, weightless and gentile worlds like soap bubbles” while and Hernández the concern for the almost intrinsic nature of image and the at the same time honestly acknowledge –ever more commendable taking into carnality of their manner of depiction has increased progressively. account the precarious means they usually work with- that the image must be ― powerful (in the common and philosophical sense of the word) or it will not be. 119 In short, Lecuona and Hernández perceive in inverting authoring –according there is something transcendental in the resistence posed by the material to which they interpret themselves more like a product of their work than the substratum of image to total elucidation. And they are aware that settling other way round- an intellectual field where they can approach the (problem down in a territory marked out with positions in constant need of being of) living as the result of (with clear aesthetic connotations) the effort made explained, forces to, paradoxically, nomadism. Simultaneously, their actions to inhabit their own decisions and discriminations in the scenery of a sense also faced the alleged “organicity” and naturalness of preformative practices furnished with contingent images which are capable of transcending, by virtue (in contrast with a greater conceptuality of image), supposedly closer to life of a narrative-based coherence, mere occurrence (in a historical context which than to representation, in order to show that form always has less to do with has turned the fortuitous and the adaptative into a favourite mechanism of formalism than with formality. economic and social production and reproduction). ― Between 2000-03 the work of Lecuona and Hernández fell within that which could be regarded as the continuation of the simultaneous critical process to Modernism and its alleged postmodern overcoming. Modernism was the last attempt to define and defend a differential space for quality art apart from the spurious interests alien to its autonomous logic (radically linked with [P. 44] The decline of model and monument, of the common reference points that gathered the community at the foot of the pedestal determining social circulation in the public square, is followed by the decline of the artist of genius whose exceptional personality guided subjectivities which were alternative to normative models. But simultaneously, the traditional uselessness of art). This abstract drive reached its peak with it tells us about the void in the pedestal and the ensuing desolation of public space. Minimalism, which, at the same time marked its turning point by stressing that Lecuona and Hernández’s work constantly makes the critique of a specific state of the perception of the work of art always depended on a specific viewpoint things (in this case, through self-parody, at the study –and in study- in the private space (understood, in this case, almost exclusively in the spatial sense of the term). and in the privacy of doubt- of the artist’s self-perception) co-exist with the evidence of The first post-Minimalist criticism did not go far beyond this, confining itself the challenge posed by the newly conquered void. to highlighting the connotative dimension of the material (often linked to the quasi-mystical pre-conceptual contents of power before becoming shape) and the process dimension of their making and significance. The works by [P. 45] Lecuona and Hernández parodied both the alleged formalism of “pure forms” Poor materials –which we could call “intonation in marine plywood”- denounce the and the supposed lack of conceptuality of organic materials, both the poor indifference with which late Modernism referred to the artist’s alleged neutrality; but interpretation of perspectivism and the limited conception of process. Despite acknowledging it is inappropriate, they cannot withdraw from the Modernist expectation of finding a (temporarily) autonomous space for the artistic image and differentiated protocols for its registry and reception. Nor can they disavow the nihilism laicism leads to while at the same time they sense 120 determine behaviour, but allegedly neutral forms which define, often through fear or intellectual intimidation –linked to the desire for public approval-, positions and set the boundaries between viewers (formerly regarded as active subjects) and those who make themselves be admired (formerly considered passive objects). The relationship between appearance and the conscience which perceives it is far from being solipsistic, it is not solved psychologically but [P. 49] cartographically: it either places us as present (at the banquet? at decision making?) or The Raft of the Medusa is the painting with which Géricault planned his launch to under the table (picking up the scraps?, or just outside the game being played there?) stardom. It tells of the troubles the poor (in both senses) crew of a frigate –aboard or next to the speaker or to the listener. And it is all done through a simple scenography which the French army was to take possession of a colonial territory, ceded by the which is as effective as contingent, dramatic and hermetic. Perhaps because the trick in the pleasure of power relies on keeping out of sight its exercise. As there was not enough room in the lifeboats, a raft was improvised which at first, was to be towed by the boats but which was finally left adrift as the privileged boat crew decided to get rid of the useless load, thus turning it [P. 47] into the scene of the shipwrecked men who, in the 13 days they were left at their own devices, were forced to commit acts against humanity. The painting gave international But surely enough Lecuona and Hernández shared with the sensitivities they parodied fame to its author and at the same time helped to, after a two-year censorship- clear –both Minimalist and postMinimalist-, the conviction that the most disciplinary element up a matter involving incompetence, nepotism and classism in the newly restored is meaning itself, human readiness to representation. From 2004 selfrepresentation is (more) frequent in the work of Lecuona and Hernández: from “I say” [P. 48] they go on to “I say I”, an “I” which delegates its condition as subject into object of saying and which, therefore, rather than doing or saying (characteristic of performance) Lecuona and Hernández’s work always brings together the aesthetics of suspicion it appears to be inquiring, searching, waiting, unsure, uncertain or fearful. [P. 60, 61] [P. 53, 54] In Futuro anterior the hypothesis of working with the remains of the shipwreck seems to take shape in order to turn ruins into a place for reunion, work, study or provision. Most of Lecuona and Hernández’s performances start with a clumsy juggler turned into If in Cómo hacer de una silla un banco they had adapted subjects to a situation of the alter ego of the artist. Henceforth, the actions of Lecuona and Hernández underline the passage from formalism to formality, often repeating a social habit to the point of absurdity. If in Impasse painting was very loud sounds now become inaudible. It evokes the impossibility of image trying to be able to depict that which remains and at the same time it is natural instinct to try to do so; the variability of the equal seems to bring drumming to life which, oddly enough, is only detached from identity to its course: the decline of image is irrevocable, there is no room to call again the possibility of finding a privileged link between that which we picture to ourselves and the truth beyond the contingent, doxa, historical interests, human, far too human; and, nonetheless, irony reappears in these “descents”, not so much as nostalgia for the resurrection of flesh as a reminder of the need the spirit has of finding something below the cold and shining surface of nothingness. through calling a collectivity which is also patently absent. The dumb talking to the deaf, imitating gestures is all we have left. [P. 88] As in some sort of epilogue, in Cleaning table baroque painting turns into the dissection [P. 72 - 75] Another recurring theme in the work of Lecuona and Hernández is limit. If their ‘photoperformances‘ frequently refer to the limits of the movements which define us, their “pieces” look like pictures which fall off the wall to underline how the scenic effect of the image hierarchically arranges an in front of, behind, inside, outside. It quite often happens that the figure is not a convex (id)entity that can comfortably fit in a welcoming concave background but it is some sort of itching which fights to stretch the limits to occupy a space in a surface (of the image) which plays simultaneously the roles of background and figure (the image is theme and context). The processes of definition, the temporary autonomous isolation which allows for a mental territory and a vital space to be shaped involve the building of a skin which looks defensive but, on the contrary, seems to have inner tensions (the sea in Isla-Cáscara is gently placed inside bags but its light projects unsettling shadows in the back yard of what seemed to be the kindest area: that of the definition of inwardness. Likewise, Confín makes the wall permeable only to allow us to evoke the blurred image of the remaining natural courting which is now beyond the tensions of the home dream). table of its own corpse, as if mourning (which repeats through a thousand different rituals the funerals for the death of the artistic as the only likely possibility of extending its agony in a zombie existence) was followed by the forensic exam and, paradoxically, morbid, of the circumstances of the crime or of the etiology of our suffering. Against that which seems to have turned into an academy, the deconstructive drive does not pursue, in Lecuona and Hernández, to make the image explode, on the contrary, it aims to analyse its ailments to then perhaps, remove the corpse. Lest we are celebrating the decay of heroes without realising that it is fighting that has disappeared. Indeed, the Minimalist cube might have been lacking in drainage to pick up the humours of the cultural body whose decease was certifying. ― I maintain that we do not devote ourselves today to things inasmuch as they are sheer representations and not motifs, the core of the concept of contemplation of the idealist aesthetics, but we have little by little undergone a great detournement with them, we have filled them up with impurity. We can devote ourselves to things with an engrossed look, admiration, carefully and taking our time because half way through, in the middle or inbetween, moments of [P. 76 - 86] reflection occur: we seek memories, comparisons, reminiscence surprises us, we project and associate. Our gaze can turn inquiring, discovering, analytical, In the latter years, the “painting” of Lecuona and Hernández becomes clearly baroque. surprised after all. This is why our body is no longer absent and with it, desire, Baroque is the time when artistic representation folds upon itself in order to extend questions about morals, identity, the world, the real world, that of sickness, meaning by means of the forcible passage through rhetoric mechanisms which make hunger, greed, sexual drive, envy and death. In the meantime, theories stop 123 being absent too, and they explain the relation between things and words, the The early work of Lecuona and Hernández was devoted to lucidity, to make it philosophy which accounts for “affections, precepts and concepts”. clear that they wanted to inhabit their circumstances, that their will to prepare Aurora Fernández-Polanco an area temporarily autonomous fell within the irrevocable crisis of the autonomy of art, to show that all the values are priced in games of power, that any attempt to end the conflict is a juggler’s trick trying to keep attention away The work of art has long been linked to the possibility of removing a limited from what is evident, that natural habitat is a stage and “life itself” a code of group of images from the stream of the visible, frame them and demand conduct. Once this catharsis is over, their simple desolate shapes, allegories special attention for them so that they can revive the eternal in the memory of nihilism conquered with shrewdness and suspicion, began to be filled up of viewers from all times and places. In order for this practice to be plausible it is necessary to imagine that these exceptional images are capable of corresponding to something, an entity or identity, an essence or idea, which remains apart from the flow of that contingent or transitory. It is not only necessary to imagine that such a thing exists –something that constantly denies experience, which is only of the fleeting- but that it can incarnate, with sparkling arms and gear of the old deserted warrior in the battle against horizontality. The silence of the elided fight began to shine, the first person stopped showing the uneasiness of the juggler who knows his tricks, the pathos of the clown who knows his jokes, and even the anguish of the tenant who is aware of being an exile in his own house, and the space defined by their many strategic withdrawals began to be intellectually furnished. With dry irony, that which was repressed emerged in the cold and steely surface of nihilism, through its representation, in an object of this world and ‘inhabit among us’. as if wanting to show the hidden face of the image, the phantom of that which Lecuona and Hernández decided to be artists some years ago, that is, had been immured live in its surface. But the figure did not meet again with its recognised themselves in that tradition. But, to be sure, became lucid background, the show cannot go on because in Lecuona and Hernández’s work artists, fully aware they inhabit a world where there are more images than character and stage always cross each other: sometimes it is the background experiences, which are perishable and demand careless and conventional that is disfigured and others figures have no background. The warrior does not perception, not an uninterested long term consideration but an effective im.mediate attention. No doubt because nobody believes there is anything immortal, true, universal or essential any more underneath the torrent of opportunist, biassed and operational perspectives. Can something similar to art be done then? Artists are devoted to answering this question, it could not be otherwise, with heart and soul, as their possibility of being relies on it (that find the place where his proclamations can be heard or his marches played. He only hints at his flagrant weakness, or his absence, through a baroque phantasmagoria which re.flexes the image on itself in order to find in its fold, in its fracture or in its un.folding, that delay which enables a sensory regime that suspends the logic of the spectacle and makes the most of the desert to plough it with the echo of reminiscence, relations and evocations. someone they have decided to be). Their concern is then mainly professional, intra-artistic, meta-linguistic. But at the same time their implications are vital, The old ecologist MacMillan said that ‘we must save the condors, not so much worldly, urgent. Being an artist is not an uncontrollable drive (Lecuona and because we need them but, above all, because to save them we must develop Hernández, who have proved versatile in several fields, cannot argue that “they the human qualities we shall need to save ourselves”. Perhaps we could say had no choice”) but a commitment with the possibility of nourishing a type of just as much of art. Skinned, endangered or embalmed, it insists on its agony perception that is reluctant to accept that everything (we see) is the same. Can perhaps only to keep the forensic habit of perceiving in what we see clues we see something on the surface that, without trying to take us aesthetically which reverberate, resound and establish relations, thus defining the scene of to a transcendent reality, is reluctant to subject everything that is immanent to the crime where artists have settled in and are examining their case. the law of “that which appears is good and good is that which appears?” 124 125 www.beatrizlecuonayoscarhernandez.com
