“THEY ARE THE CHILDREN OF GOD”

Luke 20:27-38
Our Lord’s response to the Sadducees who posed a
question to Jesus about the resurrection of the dead
reminds us that “we are the children of God because we are
the ones who will rise.” It’s good for us to remember that
point. It’s like the story Rachel Naomi Remen tells in one of
her books. She writes about a king and a queen who ruled
a land that had prosperity and good fortune. Their son, the
young prince, studied to learn how to be a good sovereign
like his parents. All was going well until one day the prince
could not be found. The servants searched high and low.
Finally someone found the prince under the banquet table—
stark naked. “What are you doing?” they all asked the
prince. “And where are your clothes?” The prince answered,
“I am a chicken. I do not need any clothes.” The king and
queen were stunned. Everyone tried to persuade the prince
to end his foolishness, but he refused. “I am a chicken,” he
told them. He would not come out from under the table. He
refused to put on clothes. He would not eat anything, except
corn seed scattered on the floor. When physicians and wise
men were summoned to try and cure the prince of his
madness, none of them could convince the poor deluded
prince that he was not a chicken. Then one day an old farm
woman came to the castle and said she could cure the
prince. “But how?” the king asked. “You are not a scholar or
doctor. How can you cure my son?” She answered, “I will
cure your son because I understand chickens.” So the old
woman was allowed to enter the Great Hall where she
found the prince under the table. The old woman first
removed her own clothes and then sat down next to the
prince. She began to peck at the corn. The prince asked,
“Who are you?” The old woman said, “I am a chicken.” The
prince was happy to have another chicken to talk to. After a
while, he opened up to her and talked. The prince and the
old woman soon became fast friends. After earning the
prince’s trust, the old woman put back on her clothes. The
prince cried, “What are you doing? You have betrayed me!
You told me you were a chicken!” The old woman
answered, “But I am a chicken. I can wear clothes and still
be a chicken.” The prince thought about that for some time.
Then he had his clothes brought to the hall and he dressed.
The old woman asked that food be brought to the table.
When it was served, she sat down at the table and ate. The
prince was appalled. “You lied to me! You told me you were
a chicken!” She answered, “I am a chicken. But I can sit at a
table and eat and still be a chicken.” The prince thought
about it. Then he also crawled out and joined the old
woman at the table. And for the first time in a long time the
prince laughed. The prince went on to become the greatest
king his land had ever known. Under his rule, people were
free to be the persons they were meant to be and all were
wise and understanding of each other. The moral of the
story? I suppose you could say that God—through his Son,
Jesus—shows us “chickens” how to be “princes.” Jesus
came to show us that we are called to be children of God,
which means we move beyond our fears and selfishness
and live the new life given to us by Christ Jesus.
THIRTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME (C)
Eternity is not just “a very long time.” Eternity, in fact,
is a timeless state in which each of us is to be
captivated by the beauty of God. We can taste eternity
even here and now. We pray that we may be attentive
to God’s gifts which are right in front of us.

The St. Francis of Assisi Women's Guild will
be selling Brass Advent Candle Holders and
Advent Taper Candles after Mass on
Sunday, November 6th, 13th and 20th in
preparation for the Advent Season which
begins Sunday, November 27th. The cost
will be $15 for the set; or, if purchased
separately, $10 for the Advent Candle Holder and $7 for the
Advent Taper Candles. We hope that in addition to our
Advent Candle Lighting at St. Francis of Assisi Church, all
families will prepare for the true meaning of Christmas by
celebrating this beautiful Advent Wreath tradition in their
homes with their families during this Advent Season.

St. Mary’s Catholic School’s Annual Turkey Dinner is next
Sunday, November 13th from 10 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. in the
McCullough Center. Cost is $10 for adults and $8 for seniors
and children. Take out orders will be available beginning at
10 a.m. in the Parish Center. Please join us for turkey and
dressing, potatoes and gravy, green beans, rolls, and
dessert. Thank you for your support of Catholic education.
