l País Vasco, a pesar de su reducida
dimensión, es un gran consumidor y
productor de literatura.
Respecto al volumen de producción de
libros en lengua vasca, cabe señalar que,
según los últimos datos disponibles (2006),
alcanza la cifra de 1.710 títulos anuales. De
ellos, 482 títulos corresponden al sector de
la literatura infantil y juvenil, y 251 al de la
literatura para adultos. Cifras significativas,
sin duda, para un idioma que cuenta, en
la actualidad, con alrededor de 800.000
hablantes.

Sin embargo, más destacable es aún la
calidad de la aportación que las letras vascas
vienen realizando a la literatura universal,
como prueba la excelente acogida que
han registrado varios de nuestros autores
traducidos a otras lenguas: Bernardo Atxaga,
Mariasun Landa, Anjel Lertxundi, Ramón
Saizarbitoria, Joseba Sarrionandia…
La literatura vasca ha recorrido, por
tanto, un exitoso camino en los mercados
internacionales, y contribuir a esa expansión
es, precisamente, el propósito de la
ASOCIACIÓN DE EDITORES EN LENGUA VASCA
al editar, en colaboración con la Consejería de
Cultura del Gobierno Vasco, la presente Guía
de Derechos.
Esta guía, destinada a agentes literarios y
editores, ofrece las siguientes informaciones:
• Fichas y reseñas de obras literarias en
lengua vasca con derechos disponibles
para su traducción a otras lenguas.
Los libros se presentan según el índice
alfabético de autores.
• Datos de las editoriales pertenecientes a
la ASOCIACIÓN DE EDITORES EN LENGUA
VASCA, dispuestas a atender ofertas
de edición en lengua vasca de obras
procedentes de otros idiomas.
En cualquier caso, la ASOCIACIÓN DE

he Basque Country, in spite of being
small, is a great consumer and
producer of literature.
As for the volume of book production, it is
worth emphasising, that it reaches 1,710 books
annually, according to the last reports. Among
them, 482 books belong to children and
teenagers literature, and 251 to literature for
adults. These are obviously important figures
for a language that currently has around
800,000 speakers.
However, the quality that Basque
literature has added to the universal
literature is even more important, and a proof
of that is the good reception several of our
authors, whose works have been translated
into other languages, have received: Bernardo
Atxaga, Mariasun Landa, Anjel Lertxundi,
Ramón Saizarbitoria, Joseba Sarrionandia…
Therefore the Basque literature has done
a successful work in international markets.
And the reason why the Basque Language
Publishers’ Association has published the
present Guide of Rights, in collaboration with
the Department of Culture of the Basque
Government, is actually to contribute to such
expansion.
This guide, intended for literary agents
and publishers, provides the following
information:
• I nformation about publishing
companies that have published the
originals in Basque, as a way to establish
a link with authors.
• I nformation about publishing
companies that belong to the Basque
Language Publishers’ ASsociation, in
order to meet offers to publish in Basque
works written in other languages.
In any case, the Basque Language
Publishers’ Association would be
kind of answering any question or giving
information.

a Consejería de Cultura del Gobierno
Vasco establece anualmente el régimen
de subvenciones para la traducción a
otras lenguas de obras literarias originalmente publicadas en lengua vasca, así como el
régimen de subvenciones para la traducción
a otras lenguas (excepto a la lengua vasca)
de obras originales en castellano escritas
por autores nacidos o domiciliados en la
Comunidad Autónoma Vasca.
En el convencimiento de que resultará
de interés para aquellos editores que
deseen publicar obras de autores vascos en
otros idiomas, detallamos a continuación
los criterios básicos que rigen estas
subvenciones:

• I mporte de la subvención: la ayuda podrá
cubrir hasta el 100% de los costes de traducción de la obra.
•S
olicitantes: podrán solicitar las presentes
subvenciones los editores (es decir, personas jurídicas) que publiquen las obras
traducidas.

very year, the Basque Government’s
Department of Culture establishes
a subvention scheme for the translation of literary works originally published
in Basque to other languages, and another
subvention scheme for the translation of
original works in Spanish to other languages
(excluding Basque) which have been written
by authors born or residing in the Basque
Region.
Below is a list of the basic criteria governing
these subventions for those publishers who
are interested and wish to publish works by
Basque authors in other languages:

pplicants: publishing companies (corporations) that publish the translated work
may request these subsidies.

bruja. Habrá de repetir el curso de natación, pero el próximo año el profesor es Ibon, y eso cambiará las cosas un poco, o un mucho incluso.

Synopsis
Helena doesn’t like her swimming classes, or the swimming pool, because
water gets in her mouth and ears, her eyes turn red, and especially because she hates the teacher, Sorkun, who looks like a witch. She has to repeat the course, but next year’s teacher is this fellow called Ibon, so things
may go a little better. Or even a lot better!

Pottoko’s first adventure in 1984. Later he stopped teaching and has

Synopsis
In the forest of Irati there are old stories, simple people’s tales to
explain things they did not fully understand, legends in which witches, dragons and fairies appear… No one believes these stories any
more and they are just told to children on stormy days when thunder
and lightning rule the Earth. But it could just possibly be that the
magic creatures of the forest are the ones who do not want humans
to discover their existence and who hide behind the myths.

regularly publishing stories in different magazines, a few successes in
different literary contests encouraged her to make a vocation of her
writing. Her tale Frog for a Day reached the finals of EDEBÉ publishing
house’s Children’s Literature Prize.
Nació en Arrigorriaga (Vizcaya) y vive en Lezama con su familia. Tras
publicar regularmente cuentos en varias revistas, algunos éxitos en
varios concursos literarios la animaron a cultivar definitivamente
su vocación literaria. Su relato Rana por un día quedó Finalista del

Synopsis
Some say that a black cat crossing your path brings you good luck, whilst
others think the opposite. Go and find out which ones are right – or
whether none of them are. However, if adventures aren’t your speciality,
when you find yourself with a black cat don’t look at it whatever you do
and, most important of all, don’t take it into your head to follow it, because you might just have the same experience my Uncle Charles and I
had when we decided to rescue from the ruins of an old house an – apparently – sweet and innocent black kitten.

una hoja con un mensaje escrito: “!Emprende tu camino!”. Y Lorea ha
empezado a caminar…

In a distant forest, a woman planted a seed. The seed grew into a plant
and the plant became a half-flower-half-girl called Lorea. Lorea has grown
up now, and the woman’s life has reached its end. She has left Lorea a note
saying: “Find your own way!” Lorea has begun to find her way.

Es un libro adecuado para cualquier edad, pero preferentemente para

El tema principal que trata el relato es, sin lugar a dudas, la creatividad. Las
dos autoras han querido resaltar, que la vida misma es creación al fin y al
cabo y que hasta de las cosas mas absurdas y aparentemente desechables
se puede crear algo bonito y útil siempre que se crea en ello.
Synopsis
This book may be read by anyone but mainly targets the 9-11 age group
because that is the time when children begin to go out just with their
friends and relate to each other in a new way. At times they adopt roles
and patterns of behaviour that do not reflect their true feelings because
of group pressure or a mere passing fad.
Creativity is the main theme of this story. The authors convey the message
that life itself is ultimately a creation; from the most absurd and seemingly useless things it is possible to create something nice and of value if
only we believe in it.

Synopsis
Grandma has a cherry tree that is always in flower. She looks after it as if it
were a baby. When she opens the windows in the morning she says good
morning to it. She picks its fruit every day before it falls to the ground.
Grandma hides the cherries where I can’t get to them, in places that are
high up and hard to reach. But Mummy always know where to find them.
She has a good nose for cherries.

Armspach). Kattalin Totorika adapted the narrative to Euskara.

vasco francesa Sylvet Caro y el conocido ilustrador Marko (Marko

It is the summer of 1888, and horrible things start to happen in
Whitechapel. A criminal destined to fame, called Jack the Stripper, starts
murdering women, mainly prostitutes.
There are more and more murders and they get progressively crueller, but
the hero of our story suspects that he knows Jack the Stripper’s true identity.

Basque philology and since then he lives in Vitoria-Gasteiz. He has
particularly written children’s and juvenile literature (Usoa, hegan etorritako
neskatoa, Arroza eta tinta, Midasen eraztuna…), achieving several awards
in this genre. Although he has also worked in the adult literature and
translation field (Jeans-ak hozkailuan, Printze Txikia…). Enthusiast of
literature and fond of the Arab world, several of his works and translations
can be framed within this scope, such as Eztia eta ozpina, Atlas
sentimentala, and the antology Mila gau eta bat gehiago itself.
Nació en Ordizia, (Guipúzcoa), en 1964. Estudió Filologia vasca
y desde entonces vive en Vitoria-Gasteiz. Sobre todo ha escrito
Literatura Infantil y Juvenil (Usoa, hegan etorritako neskatoa,
Arroza eta tinta, Midasen eraztuna…), cosechando en este género
varios premios. Aunque también ha hecho inclusión en la literatura
de adultos y la traducción (Jeans-ak hozkailuan, Printze Txikia…).
