Find the pattern

Dear Parent,
In our classroom, we are learning to reason inductively to solve problems, with help from the PBS
KIDS® series Odd Squad.
Find the pattern:
Gather a collection of small objects (blocks, books, crayons)
and arrange them in a pattern. For example, arrange
crayons in 4 rows alternating between 2 and 3 crayons in
each row:
•Model finding patterns.
• Point out the pattern of [crayons] in each row.
• For example, say, “I see 2 crayons in the first, row,
3 crayons in the second row, 2 crayons in the third
row and 3 crayons in the fourth row. This looks like a
pattern because 2 and 3 happen again and again.”
•Help your child predict how many objects are next in the

Help your child learn to use inductive
reasoning to solve problems in
fun and easy ways at home. To
help your child learn and use new
words, repeat these words often as
you talk about and explore these
mathematical practices:
•pattern
•conjecture
pattern.
• Ask your child to make a conjecture—a good guess—about how many crayons will go in the next row.
• Ask your child to check if the conjecture was correct by pointing out the pattern.
Repeat this activity with different patterns and objects.
Play an online game together:

As you play Code Breaker, prompt your child to point out the patterns and make conjectures about which
number is next in the pattern.

you view together, ask questions like these to talk with your child about how the Odd Squad agents solve
problems:
•What patterns did the agents notice?
•What conjectures (good guesses) did the agents make?
•Were their conjectures correct? How do you know?
Read together:
Visit your local library to check out books that will help your child learn more about noticing patterns and
making conjectures. Recommendations include:

•Pancakes for Breakfast, by Tomie dePaola (wordless)
•The Story of a Little Mouse Trapped in a Book, by Monique Felix (wordless)
