I hope that all of you have had a wonderful celebration of the birth of Our Lord into our world, and are now beginning a new calendar year full of hope and joy. The Church celebrates January 1 as the feast of Mary in her title as Mother of God. In this most mysterious event, a human being gives birth to our very God, to her own creator. When the bishops gathered at the Council of Ephesus in 431 declared this as truth, they were actually making more of a statement about Jesus than about Our Lady. They said, in effect, that his humanity and divinity are both so integral to who he is that you cannot separate them, saying that Mary gave birth to his humanity only. It is also a statement about us: the part of us, sometimes deeply hidden, that is created in the image and likeness of God, is integral to who we are. We are truly a marvelous creation, a mysterious intertwining of sinful humanity enlivened by the spark of divinity. May we always recognize ourselves and others for the mysteries that we are. Today’s feast, that of the Epiphany of the Lord, is the revelation of that divinity, that specialness, in the guise of simple humanity. The Magi who came from the East recognized it in Jesus. It was revealed at Jesus’ baptism in the Jordan, and once again at His first miracle at Cana. This feast is a reminder to me that it can still be revealed, even in the midst of the ordinariness of life. Also, January 2 is the feast of St. Basil the Great, who was chosen by our founders to be patron of the Basilian Fathers. St. Basil, a fourth century bishop and founder of monasticism in the East, had a special love for learning and the poor, and an appreciation of the gift of friendship. I pray that St. Basil may continue to bless all of you, all of this parish community of Most Holy Trinity, with these gifts of genuine friendship, of a love for learning, and a commitment to serving the poor. Fr. Padre Maurice The Epiphany of the Lord La Epifanía del Señor Reflection by Deacon Rob Ward I have heard many questions about Epiphany. Some ask who were these astrologers? And how come they are called that now when they were called the wise men. And one more question...Did the family sell these gifts to pay for their trip to Egypt? The trouble is, we do not ask the right questions. This is a story of a journey, a search. Who is really making the journey? We are. It is called life, and like those special excursion flights, we have to return to the point of origin, which is called God. To die and believe one will see God is an old and very simple statement of Christian faith. But to live and see God and to walk with God every day is even more challenging and perhaps takes greater faith. The first answer to the search for God is that we have to help one another. In the gospel Epiphany story, the wise men did not make the search alone. They traveled in a group, a like-minded community. They sought out expert advice, and they listened to those learned in scriptures. We are a community of faith called the Church. The Church helps us interpret the scripture and shares its traditions to help us on our journey. It is here to help us enter into God’s presence. Today on the Feast of the Epiphany, we are reminded that our search is for God, or more precisely, for that saving action through which God comes in contact with us, all of us. A star guided the wise men’s actions. So, too, with God’s revelation that happened long ago with the coming of Christ, but God’s revelation is radiated into our life anew each day of our lives. God, Christ, is in human life, and will be recognized if we have the eyes to see, ears to hear, and a heart to believe. If you want to ensure deductibility of your contributions to the parish, please use a check, direct deposit from your bank account, or your parish envelopes. The parish staff will track contributions made using parish envelopes and will, upon request, provide a written statement of contributions made during 2011. Cancelled checks and other bank records are also sufficient documentation. We cannot track cash contributions that are not in parish envelopes. Age of Technology Have you ever thought of getting a gift for the parish? We here at Most Holy Trinity are in need of new computers. Some of our present ones are still running versions of Windows so old that they cannot run the newer programs that we use for bulletins and some of the archdiocesan business. Sometimes we can’t open attachments that people send us because we have such old software versions. It would be a dream-come-true to have an up-to-date server and computer network for our parish offices. Anyone else wishing to donate to this endeavor is asked to contact the parish office. New Clergy Vestments! We are getting close to being able to purchase a set of green vestments for use at Masses! Cardinal DiNardo has stated that he wants all deacons to wear dalmatics (an outer garment with sleeves, worn over the alb and stole), and that the chasubles priests wear should be of the type that has the stole inside. It is time, then, to start updating. I hope to be able to purchase a set of vestments each year that are dignified, yet not extravagant, until we have all the liturgical colors. Since green, worn during Ordinary Time, gets the most use, I would like to start with that. Anyone wishing to donate to this endeavor is asked to contact the parish office. Thank you, Fr. Maurice Book Study January invitation The Book Study group will be reading Gift of the Red Bird by Paula D’Arcy for their January selection. Feast of the Epiphany of the Lord Epiphany means “manifestation” referring to the appearance of Jesus. The significance of this day is not just the arrival of the Magi, but the coming of Gentiles to adore the newborn King of the Jews. The event recognized Jesus’ rule over the entire world. Many traditions about the Magi, often referred to as “wise men”, have evolved over time. The scriptures speak of three gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh, but never say how many Magi brought them. Nonetheless, tradition claims there were three and even ascribes to them the names of Melchoir, Balthasar and Caspar. During this Christmas season, families are encouraged to keep the feast of Epiphany. Traditionally, we bless our homes on Epiphany. We recall the visit of the Magi and ask God’s blessing on our homes and all who inhabit them. An Eastern custom uses blessed chalk, called “epiphany chalk”, to inscribe the number of the new year; the initials C, M and B, representing the magi; with a cross preceding each initial, standing for “saint”, on the lintel of the front door of the home. The letters also abbreviate the prayer “Christus mansionem benedicat,” “May Christ bless this house.” Gather your household at your home manger scene and offer a “Blessing of the Home and Household.” Involve several family members in the blessing, especially the younger children of the home. Go from room to room asking the Lord’s blessing on those who inhabit them. Use your imagination for your own personal ideas to recall the importance of the message of the Magi. In place of gold, frankincense and myrrh, make your own special offerings: in place of gold, offer funds for the poor; in place of frankincense, letters to legislators on behalf of the needy; in place of myrrh, gifts for the homebound and dying. Add extra candles to the family dining table, as a reminder of the star the magi followed, and the light that the presence of Christ brings into our daily homes.
