First Sunday of Lent
February 26, 2012
“ Your ways, O LORD, make
known to me; teach me your paths.”
- Psalm 25:4
REPENT AND BELIEVE IN THE GOSPEL
Lent is the time of year we devote to scrutinizing our lives in the light of our baptism into the death and resurrection of Jesus. Today’s readings are a nice shorthand catechism of what our baptized lives mean. As Noah passed through the waters of the flood to a
covenant with God, so did we enter into a covenant, a promised relationship with God through our baptism. Peter’s letter gives an
explicit explanation of what our baptism means: it is an appeal we make to God for a clear conscience. How do we obtain this clear
conscience? The words proclaimed by Jesus immediately following his temptation show us the way: “Repent, and believe in the
gospel” (Mark 1:15). It might be a good spiritual exercise to keep these readings before us throughout the entire season of Lent, a
means to help us return to a life lived by our baptismal promises.

LENTEN SCHEDULE
2012 DIOCESAN SERVICES FUND
Thank you for answering the call to express God’s love and
compassion through your commitment to this year’s Diocesan
Services Fund. Catholics throughout our Archdiocesan Church
are uniting in faith, sharing their blessing and giving gifts in
Christ’s name. If you have not yet responded, we urge you to
consider offering your commitment at this time; each gift helps.
With every parishioner’s meaningful participation, we will succeed in reaching our goal of $65,000.00 and provide hope and
help for those among us who are most in need. If you prefer to
donate online, visit archgh.org/dsf/Donate.
Guidelines For Lenten Observance
Good Friday - is day of fast and abstinence.
Fridays during Lent - are days of abstinence.
Fasting - binds all persons who have completed their 18th
birthday through those who have completed their 59th year,
unless prevented by poor health. On days of fast, one full meal
is allowed. Two other meals sufficient to maintain strength,
may be taken according to one’s own needs. Eating between
meals is not allowed although fluids may be taken.
Abstinence - binds all persons who have completed their 14th
birthday, unless prevented by poor health. On days of abstinence, the consumption of meat is not allowed. The Church
strongly encourages the observance of Friday abstinence, but
failure to do so is not regarded as sinful.
Religious Education News
The children in our religious education
programs soon will be busy preparing
candy filled eggs for the Easter Egg
Hunt. We need plastic eggs and small,
wrapped candy to put inside. We want to
start as soon as possible, because every
year we need to lay more eggs. Please
bring your donations to the Church Office.

Primer Domingo de Cuaresma
26 de Febrero 2012
“Descúbrenos, Señor, tus
caminos guíanos con la verdad de
tu doctrina ” - Salmo 25:4
