«We are no more than servants; we have only done our duty»
Today, Christ’s message is once more about service. The Gospel is always insisting upon the spirit of ser
vice. And it helps to see how the Verb of God Incarnate —Yahweh’s, Isaiah’s servant— «took upon him the form
of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, He humbled himself, and
became obedient» (Phil 2:2-7). Christ also said: «But I am in the midst of you as one who serves» (Lk 22:27), as
«the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many» (Mt 20:28).
Jesus’ example was clearly apparent when He washed his disciples’ feet, thus accomplishing a servant’s task. With
that gesture He wanted to make quite evident that his followers were to serve, help and love each other, as brothers
and servers to all, as He proposes in the parable of the Good Samaritan.
We have to live all our Christian life with that sense of service and without believing we are doing anything
extraordinary. All our family, professional and social life —in the political, economical world, etc.— have to be
imbibed by this spirit. «To serve, to serve», asserted St. Josemaría Escrivá; he wanted us to understand that “to be
useful” we have to live a life of generous service without seeking honors, human glory or applause.
In the old days they said that phrase “nolentes quaerimus” —«amongst our rulers let us look for those who
do not have ambition for power; those who do not want to show off»— when it was time to nominate someone for
the Hierarchy. This is the actual purpose of those good pastors that are ready to serve the Church, as the Church
wants to be served: to assume the condition of servants as Christ did. Let us remember the well-known words by
St. Augustine stating how the ecclesial function has to be exerted: «Non tam praeesse quam prodesse»; not so
much to command but to serve, being useful.

HOLY HOUR. The members of the Sacred Heart Society will
have their monthly Holy Hour this Sunday, October 2nd after
the 7:00 a.m. mass in the St. Michael Chapel.
The Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament in the St. Michael Chapel continues next Tuesday, October 4th from 7:00
a.m. until 6:00 p.m.
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION. The Religious Education classes
are already started and are from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Please
bring your children on time. There is still time to register your
child on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. in the
Trailer Please bring your children’s Baptism certificate when
you come to register them. Thank you.
THE ALTAR SERVERS PRACTICE for new and returning
students will resume next Saturday, October 8th from 11:30
a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Please come to the practice.
St. Joseph Fund Raising Committee. The raffle
which was scheduled for September 24, 2016 is now scheduled
for next Saturday, October 8, 2016. Please show your support
and purchase a ticket. The prizes are: an Apple IPad Air; a
32” smart TV and a two night stay at Buccaneer Hotel. All
proceeds go towards the church operation. Thank you.
OUR SECOND COLLECTION next weekend October 8-9th
will be for the electricity and maintenance of the church.

be held at the Frenchman’s Reef Hotel on Saturday, February
l, 2017. The awardees for this year’s benefit are the Knights
and Dames of Malta from the Diocese of St. Thomas. They are

It is the Bishop’s hope that the profit from this affair will pay

“JUNTOS CONSTRUYENDO EL REINO DE DIOS”
«Somos siervos inútiles; hemos hecho lo que debíamos hacer»
Hoy, Cristo nos habla nuevamente de servicio. El Evangelio insiste siempre en el espíritu de servicio. Nos
ayuda a ello la contemplación del Verbo de Dios encarnado —el siervo de Yavé, de Isaías— que «se anonadó y
tomó la condición de esclavo» (Flp 2,2-7). Cristo afirma también: «Yo estoy entre vosotros como el que sirve»
(Lc 22,27), pues «el Hijo del hombre no ha venido a ser servido, sino a servir y a dar su vida en rescate por todos»
(Mt 20,28). En una ocasión, el ejemplo de Jesús se concretó realizando el trabajo de un esclavo al lavar los pies
de sus discípulos. Quería dejar así bien claro, con este gesto, que sus seguidores debían servir, ayudar y amarse
unos a otros, como hermanos y servidores de todos, tal como propone la parábola del buen samaritano.
Debemos vivir toda la vida cristiana con sentido de servicio sin creer que estamos haciendo algo extraordinario. Toda la vida familiar, profesional y social —en el mundo político, económico, etc.— ha de estar impregnada
de este espíritu. «Para servir, servir», afirmaba san Josemaría Escrivá; él quería dar a entender que para “ser útil”
es preciso vivir una vida de servicio generoso sin buscar honores, glorias humanas o aplausos.
Los antiguos afirmaban el “nolentes quaerimus” —«buscamos para los cargos de gobierno a quienes no
los ambicionan; a quienes no desean figurar»— cuando había que hacer nombramientos jerárquicos. Ésta es la
intencionalidad propia de los buenos pastores dispuestos a servir a la Iglesia como ella quiere ser servida: asumir la
condición de siervos como Cristo. Recordemos, según las conocidas palabras de san Agustín, cómo debe ejercerse
una función eclesial: «Non tam praeesse quam prodesse»; no tanto con el mando o la presidencia sino, más bien,
con la utilidad y el servicio.

unción para que el Jubileo de la Misericordia sea
un año de gracia del Señor y tu Iglesia pueda, con
renovado entusiasmo, llevar la Buena Nueva a los
pobres, proclamar la libertad a los prisioneros y
oprimidos y restituir la vista a los ciegos.
