Parishioner Benefits
As we can see in Sacred Scripture, mercy
is a key word that indicates God’s action
towards us. He does not limit himself to
affirming his love, but makes it visible and
tangible. Love, after all, can never be just
an abstraction. By its very nature, it
indicates something concrete: intentions,
attitudes, and behaviors that are shown in
daily living. The mercy of God is his loving
concern for one of us. (S9)
The Diocese of San Jose will hold its annual Catholic
Education Appeal the weekend of September 10-11 at the
Diocese's 54 parishes. The appeal raises funds for the
tuition assistance program for the diocesan Department of
Education.

nosotros. Él no se limita a
afirmar su amor, sino que
lo hace visible y tangible.
El amor, después de todo,
nunca podrá ser un palabra abstracta. Por
su misma naturaleza es vida concreta:
intenciones, actitudes, comportamientos
que se verifican en el vivir cotidiano.
La misericordia de Dios es su
responsabilidad por nosotros. (S9)

First Letter of Saint Paul to Timothy
Liturgy Corner by: Deborah Ferry
(taken from The Introduction To The New American Bible)
The three letters, First and Second Timothy and Titus, form a
distinct group within the Pauline corpus. In the collection of
letters by the Apostle to the Gentiles, they differ from the others
in form and contents. All three suggest they were written late in
Paul's career. The opponents are not "Judaizers" as in Galatians
but false teachers stressing "knowledge". Attention is given
especially to correct doctrine and church organization. The three
letters are addressed not to congregations but to those who
shepherd congregations. These letters were first named
"Pastoral Epistles" in the eighteenth century because they all are
concerned with the work of a pastor in caring for the community
or communities under his charge.
The first of the Pastorals, 1 Timothy, is presented as having
been written from Macedonia. Timothy, whom Paul converted,
was of mixed Jewish and Gentile parentage. He was the
apostle's companion on both the second and the third
missionary journeys and was often sent by him on special
missions. In 1 Timothy, he is described as the administrator of
the entire Ephesian community.
The letter instructs Timothy on his duty to restrain false and
useless teaching and proposes principles pertaining to his
relationship with the older members of the community and with
the presbyters. It gives rules for aid to widows and their selection
for charitable ministrations and also deals with liturgical
celebrations, selections for the offices of bishop and deacon,
relation of slaves with their masters, and obligations of the
wealthier members of the community. The central passage of the
letter expresses the principal motive that should guide the
conduct of Timothy--preservation of the purity of the church's
doctrine against false teaching. On this same note the letter
concludes.
The principal divisions of the First Letter to Timothy are the
following:
I. Address
II. Sound Teaching
III. Problems of Discipline
IV. Duties toward Others
V. False Teaching and True Wealth
VI. Final Recommendation and Warning

ALTAR SERVER
Adoration
WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE AN ALTAR SERVER?
St. Lawrence the Martyr Parish and Education Center welcomes young Catholics,
4th grade and above, to participate in the Altar Server Ministry. This ministry is a
service to respond to our baptismal calling. God has given us a gift to serve one
another. As an altar server, you serve the assembly by helping the presider (priest)
throughout the celebration of the mass; you learn what it means to celebrate the
Eucharist and to be a good steward of God’s gift at this parish community!
All who are interested must have received first Holy Communion, can serve at one
of the weekend mass on rotation (approx. 1x month) and the Wednesday school
mass.
Training will be scheduled starting in September. Please complete form and return
to Parish Office or email the following information to Anna Chitwood at

No hemos hecho nada,
THE EXALTATION OF THE HOLY CROSS
September 14, 2016
The feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross celebrates two historical events:
the discovery of the True Cross by Saint Helena, the mother of the Emperor
Constantine, in 320 under the temple of Venus in Jerusalem, and the
dedication in 335 of the basilica and shrine built on Calvary by Constantine,
which mark the site of the Crucifixion.
The basilica, named the Martyrium, and the shrine, named the Calvarium,
were destroyed by the Persians in 614. The Church of the Holy sepulcher
which now stands on the site was built by the crusaders in 1149.
However the feast, more than anything else, is a celebration and
commemoration of God's greatest work: his salvific death on the Cross and
His Resurrection, through which death was defeated and the doors to
Heaven opened.
soberbia. Dios te quiere no por tus méritos, sino
porque es tu Padre; agradéceselo, pues;
cosas y no te engañes creyendo que has cumplido y
Padre Santiago Martin.
The entrance antiphon for the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross is:
"We should glory in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, for he is our salvation,
our life and our resurrection: through him we are saved and made free."
