Gospel reading ( Mark 6: 7– 13)
Jesus summoned the Twelve* and began to send
them out two by two and gave them authority over
unclean spirits. He instructed them to take nothing
for the journey but a walking stick  no food, no
sack, no money in their belts. They were, however, to
wear sandals but not a second tunic. He said to them,
“Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you
leave. Whatever place does not welcome you or listen
to you, leave there and shake the dust off your feet in
testimony against them.” So they went off and
preached repentance. The Twelve drove out many
demons, and they anointed with oil many who were
sick and cured them.
*The Greek word for “apostle” means “one sent out.”
Brief commentary
After the rejection in Nazareth by his own people,
Jesus went to other places to preach. Today we read
how he sent out his closest friends, the Twelve, with
special instructions and powers. Jesus gave them
detailed instructions as to what to carry and how
long to stay in any given place. These were
indications for the early Christians of the need to
move quickly and urgently. We find a strong
connection between these instructions and the ones
given by Yahweh to the Israelites before they fled
Egypt. The notion of traveling light, or to “take
nothing for the journey,” rather than being a burden
makes the traveling easier. There is no need to carry
heavy things; trust in God is enough.
We know that Mark wrote his Gospel around the
year 70 A.D. At this time of persecution and
rejection by both Jews and Romans, this early
Gospel encouraged his readers to always be
dependent on God’s care.
Today’s reading offers three significant messages:
 The disciples should not place their trust in “what”
they bring to the mission, but on “who” they
proclaim.
 Mark conveys urgency in the proclamation of the
Good News. Do not try to convince the reluctant.
The mission is pressing, so the evangelizers must
keep moving.
 Jesus and his followers lived on the margins of
society, always on the edge of rejection.
Evangelio ( San Marcos 6, 7 – 13)
En aquel tiempo, reunió Jesús a los Doce y
comenzó a enviarlos de dos en dos, dándoles poder
sobre los espíritus malos. Les ordenó que no
llevaran nada para el camino fuera de un bastón:
ni pan, ni morral, ni dinero; que fueran con
calzado corriente y con un solo manto. Y les decía:
“Quédense en la primera casa en que les den
alojamiento, hasta que se vayan de ese pueblo. Si
en algún lugar no los reciben y no los escuchan,
dejen a esa gente y sacudan el polvo de sus pies
como protesta contra ellos”. Fueron a predicar
invitando a la conversión. Echaban a muchos
espíritus malos, y sanaban a numerosos enfermos
con una unción de aceite.

Comentario Breve
Después de haber sido rechazado y ridiculizado en
Nazaret, Jesús continúa predicando en otros
lugares. En el evangelio de hoy, Jesús envía a los
Doce a la misión con órdenes muy precisas. Estas
recomendaciones nos recuerdan las que fueron
dadas por Yahvé a los israelitas antes de la huída
de Egipto. La idea de viajar “ligeros de equipaje”,
lejos de ser una carga, nos alivia para la jornada.
Es mejor caminar por el desierto sin mucho peso,
pero con una gran confianza en el Señor.
Sabemos que Marcos escribió su evangelio
alrededor del año 70 d.C. en tiempos de
persecución y rechazo por parte de judíos y
romanos. El Evangelio animaba a los cristianos a
confiar plenamente en el cuidado y la providencia
de Dios.
La lectura de hoy nos presenta tres ideas
importantes:
 Los discípulos no deben poner su confianza en “lo que
llevan” con ellos para la misión, sino en el Señor a
“quien” proclaman. Deben ir “ligeros de equipaje”.
 No perdamos tiempo en convencer a los que no aceptan
el mensaje ni de tomar represalias contra los reacios a
escucharnos. La misión es urgente y los evangelizadores
deben seguir su camino.
 Jesús y sus seguidores vivieron al margen de la sociedad,
siempre expuestos al rechazo y al desprecio.

The School of Ministry is looking for
parishioners with great love for the
Church and a desire to grow deeper
in their faith for the Class of 2015 –
2017.
The traditional in-classroom lay
ministry program as well as the
online program offer the opportunity
to draw closer to Jesus, to gain a
greater understanding of the Catholic beliefs,
and to learn how to better serve the community.
Traditional classes starting in mid-September
