Weekly Reflection
Reflexión Semanal
To know and to believe
El saber y el creer
Today’s readings and prayers reflect the jubilation we
experience because we have come to know and believe
in the love God has for us (1 John 4:16). This truth is
illustrated in the gospel passage which recounts the
wedding feast at Cana. A problem exists, a shortage of
wine, and Mary’s concern for the wedding couple compels her to intercede. She knows and believes that Jesus can help in this situation, so she does not hesitate
to inform him of the problem. Her confidence is shown
in her directive to the servers, “Do whatever he tells
you.” Mary models the confidence that God’s love has
given her. She knows that her life has been “full of
grace.” Our lives are also grace-filled. Saint Paul
speaks to this truth in his letter to the Corinthians where
he reminds us that “to each individual the manifestation
of the Spirit is given for some benefit.” God loves each
of us and has given us gifts purposeful for our salvation.
The graces and blessings each of us receives enrich
not only us but each other. This is God’s intention, that
we will bless each other and proclaim his goodness
when we use our talents and gifts. The Alleluia tells us
that, “God has called us through the Gospel to possess
the glory of our Lord Jesus
Christ.” This is what our lives
must reflect as we minister to
one another, caring for the
needy and those who are hurting. Our ordinary lives can
become extraordinary witnesses to the Lord’s goodness as
our actions and words “sing to
the Lord; bless his name, [and]
announce his salvation, day
after
day”
(Responsorial
Song).

Parish News
In today’s readings we are told
of the different
gifts, forms of
service,
and
workings that come from God. These manifestations of
the Spirit come to fruition through us, for we have ability
to give the gifts of faith, healing, and of mighty deeds.
Today God calls upon each one of us here to share our
gifts with our brothers and sisters in Christ that are in
need of them. Through Together in Mission we can share
our mighty deeds and give the healing and faith to the
communities that simply would not be here without them.
Though our church is large, our strength lies not in our
numbers but in our compassion and ability to respond.
Every gift, regardless of the size, matters so long as we
give what we can and answer the calling of our faith. During all Masses next weekend, we will conduct the in-pew
process for the collection of gifts and pledges to this
year’s appeal. Together we can make sure God’s love
and presence are felt by all, especially those in need.
God bless you for your generous response and support.

Did you Know?
How do parents handle an admission of abuse?
No parent wants their children to suffer from abuse of any
kind. However, if a child discloses any instance of abuse,
how you handle this information is critical to their wellbeing. One of the most important things you can do when
a child discloses their abuse is not over react, despite the
strong and often overwhelming emotions of anger that
you are experiencing at that moment. Be certain that you
show the child great love and concern through calm, reflective words of understanding and compassion. For a
copy of the Virtus® article “After Abuse is Disclosed” and
more tips on how to handle abuse disclosures email [email protected].

St. Thomas Aquinas College Walk for Life
Aunque somos muchos Somos Uno
A group of young adults from Thomas
Aquinas College will be hosting our Friendship Sunday this week. Three bus loads
of these college students, about 200 in
total, will be heading up for the Walk for
Life West Coast in San Francisco on January 23. They will be joining tens of thousands of other people witnessing to the sanctity of human
life from conception to natural death. Thomas Aquinas
students lead the walk, provide security, and witness
around the city of San Francisco throughout the weekend.
This pilgrimage is a great blessing and opportunity to
show the joy and gift of life. Please consider joining us at
the Friendship Sunday to listen to these students' experiences and to offer them prayers and support.
