Pastor’s Corner
“Bear much fruit and…Be my Disciple!
Be my Disciple and…Bear much fruit!”
On Monday we will celebrate the
240th anniversary of the historic
pronouncement by the founding
leadership of our nation, declaring
independence from Great Britain.
Ironically, the United Kingdom
declared its ‘independence’ from the
European Union just last week.
Signing the Declaration of Independence in 1776 was a heroic act.
Those who inscribed their names to this revolutionary document
were risking everything for a noble ideal. The future was not certain
for them, but they were committed to their beliefs; and their bravery
and resolute determination brought about a ‘new nation’.
Today we revere these courageous men, whose names are written
on the original parchment. (a local point of fact: Richard Stockton
University is named for one of the 5 New Jersey representatives who
penned their name to the Declaration).
On the 4th of July, while acknowledging the ‘freedom fighters’ of
1776, we also salute the many women and men who have served
and sacrificed in our armed forces for nearly two-and-a-half
centuries to defend the liberty proclaimed so long ago. Their names
also, are etched and printed on numerous monuments and
memorials, not just in our country but around the world!
It is right to remember their heroism. But let us not forget to pray
for them; for acts of self-sacrifice are ‘heroic’ only if connected with a
noble intention. We know this from the all too common term “suicide
bomber” – in which a person sacrifices their life in committing an evil
act. It is good for us to reflect on what the true root of heroism is.
Jesus, in this Sunday’s Gospel, challenges His 72 disciples not to
‘rejoice’ over the outstanding deeds they were able to do but to
rejoice that their “names are written in heaven.”
Here we learn that heroism must be connected to Discipleship in
Christ, because the noble ideals of our great country are based on
the Judeo-Christian principles revealed in Sacred Scripture and
Tradition; and Christ was the personification of these truths because
He was a faithful Jew who fulfilled the old covenant and began the
new covenant through His self-sacrifice!

SEMI-ANNUAL BLOOD DRIVE
The Villa Marie Knights of Columbus Council #6342 will
be hosting, in association with the American Red Cross,
a blood drive, Monday, July 25, 2016 from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at
the Assumption Regional School Gym, at 146 S. Pitney Rd. Galloway
08205.
Every minute of every day, someone needs blood. That blood can
only come from a volunteer donor, a person like you who makes the
choice to donate. There is no substitute for your donation. When
you make a blood donation, you join a very select group. Currently
only 3 out of every 100 people in America donate blood. If you
desire to make an appointment or for more information please
call: Joe Nock (609) 404-0503.
BINGO - St. Nick's cafeteria next Thursday July 7th. Doors will be
open at 5:30 pm. Refreshments will be available. All Parishioners are
welcome. $1.000 in prizes. Come out and enjoy the fun.
We rejoice, therefore, that through the mercy of God, those who
offered their lives have the opportunity to share in the peace of
heaven. And we should never forget to recognize the real heroes –
those who did the will of God, His Disciples!!
We know these people as ‘Saints’, and I am referring to the ones
who have been canonized by the Church and the ones who we have
known; our parents, siblings, friends and relatives who sacrificed
each day because of the greatest cause – love: love of God and love
of neighbor. They were Disciples and therefore, their names are
written in the book.
As we celebrate the memory of all who offered their lives for love
and now share in the eternal love of God, we are also inspired to do
the same: to declare our independence from sin and death and
pledge our allegiance to Christ as His Disciple!
Peace,
Fr. Nick
Thank you for the opportunities and freedoms we have in the United
States of America. Help me never to take these blessings for granted.
Help me to live my life in a way that glorifies you, Lord. Give me the
strength to be a blessing in someone's life today, and grant me the
opportunity to lead others into the freedom that can be found in
knowing Christ. Amen

pasarla mejor: comiendo, durmiendo, estudiando, orando, jugando,
conviviendo, etc.
tendencia a fabricarse ídolos (cantantes, deportistas, personajes), a
PLEASE TAKE NOTE!
We will open the 2017 Mass books on July 1st to take intentions.

HOUSE OF CHARITY
Close to the finish line!
We’re over 80% of the way to our House of Charity goal for 2016,
but we need to make up that extra 20%. Have you given to the
annual fund? If each family who has not participated spared $60
(that’s $1.15 a week for the year), then we would reach our goal. If
you’re not sure about what the fund means, go to
camdendiocese.org/hoc and read about all the ways your donation
gives back to the church and community. Whatever you give from
the heart comes back to you two-fold, and though it may not be in
dollars, we can all benefit from a surplus of blessings. Thanks for
your continued support
