The Mamas & Papas is a support group for
relatives who are raising their grandchildren,
nieces, nephews, cousins, etc. These caregivers
are often called “kinship” caregivers. Our group
has existed since the spring of 2005 and we
meet once per month in the evening on the
second Tuesday of the month. We have a
partnership with Y.E.S. (Youth Eastside
Services)—the building behind Kindering.
We meet in their building and they provide a
concurrent support group for the school-age
children of the support group members. Any
kinship caregiver is welcome to attend a Mamas
& Papas meeting. Please contact Julie Fisher,
MSW, at 425.653.4314, if you are interested in

GRANDPARENTS OF KIDS WITH
SPECIAL NEEDS
The Kindering Center's Sibling Support Project is pleased to
announce GKSN—Grandparents of Kids with Special
Needs. We believe that no one understands a
grandparent’s unique joys and concerns better than
another grandparent of a child with special needs.
On the GKSN website, grandparents will have a chance to
meet other grandparents through our Yahoogroup or
Facebook groups, share ideas for supporting their kids and
grandkids, and even post pictures of their grandkids!
Please visit www.gksn.org and help us spread the word!

APRIL NEWS
APRIL IS CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION MONTH
Blue
PINWHEELS FOR PREVENTION {www.preventchildabuse.org} are
spinning in Kindering's courtyard.
April is child abuse prevention month.
Prevent Child Abuse America’s Pinwheels for Prevention® campaign is an effort by to
change the way our nation thinks about prevention and how we can deliver on our
commitment to America's children. As the new symbol for child abuse and neglect
prevention, the pinwheel is an uplifting reminder of childhood and the bright futures all
children deserve.
What you can do? Reach out!
Anything you do to support kids and parents can help reduce the stress that often leads to
abuse and neglect.
Be a friend to a parent you know. Ask how their children are doing. Draw on your own
experiences to provide reassurance and support. If a parent seems to be struggling, offer
to baby-sit or run errands, or just lend a friendly ear. Show you understand.
Be a friend to a child you know. Remember their names. Smile when you talk with
them.
Ask them about their day at school. Send them a card in the mail. Show you care.
Talk to your neighbors about looking out for one another's children. Encourage a
supportive spirit among parents in your apartment building or on your block. Show that
you are involved.
Give your used clothing, furniture and toys for use by another family. This can help
relieve the stress of financial burdens that parents sometimes take out on their
kids. {www.babycorner.org}
Volunteer your time and money for programs in your community that support
children and families. {www.youtheastsideservices.org, www.kindering.org/services/
