Darrin Greer, Principal,
Lent – Preparing to Live the Saving Mystery....
By Fr. Peter Bosque
…. Continued from… “In other words, as the Church moves through Holy Week, we experience the reality of
God’s saving work IN Christ’s living Body, the Church.” And THROUGH Her….
Most clearly, the saving mystery of Our Lord is signed and celebrated at the Easter
Vigil, which is why EVERYONE is invited to this holiest of rites! (We will pray the
Vigil on Saturday evening, March 30th – 8pm.)
IN and THROUGH the Vigil, the Church is caught up in the death and resurrection of
the Lord in OUR day and time, as we make present and celebrate the ‘paschal mystery’
of Our Lord Jesus Christ. Pope Paul VI wrote these words in promulgating the norms
for the new Church calendar in 1969:
“While we are celebrating his passage from death to life, we ask God that those who are reborn with Christ may
‘by their life hold fast to the sacrament they have received by faith’ [Opening Prayer, Tuesday of Holy Week].
In the words of Vatican Council II, ‘recalling the mysteries of redemption, the Church opens to the faithful the
riches of the Lord’s powers and merits, so that these are in some way made present in every age in order that the
faithful may lay hold on them and be filled with saving grace’ [Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, no. 102].”
Celebrating our reality as the “New Jerusalem,” our Holy Week begins with Palm Sunday (also called Passion Sunday because
this is the only Sunday when the Passion of Our Lord is proclaimed). The liturgy of this Sunday begins with a celebration of the
Lord’s entry into Jerusalem, with a proclamation of the Gospel outside of the church proper. We carry palms on this day not
merely for historical remembrance of a past event, but as a sign of our commitment to Christ, and struggle to follow Him, in OUR
LIVES, today! St. Andrew of Crete in the eighth century put this point well when he wrote:
“Let us go together to meet Christ on the Mount of Olives. Today He returns from
Bethany and proceeds of His own free will toward His holy and blessed passion, to
consummate the mystery of our salvation. . . . So let us spread before His feet, not
garments or soul-less olive branches, which delight the eye for a few hours and then
wither, but ourselves, clothed in His grace, or rather, clothed completely in Him. We
who have been baptized into Christ must ourselves be the garments that we spread
before him. . . . Let our souls take the place of the welcoming branches as we join
today in the children’s holy song.”
On Palm Sunday, going from outside the church to inside, processing with our palms, we are not pretending to enter the new and
eternal Jerusalem of long ago. We are preparing to enter the New Jerusalem that Christ promises to His faithful people and into
which we have already received initiation through baptism.
…. more to follow….
Blessing of Easter Baskets
An old tradition in many European countries is the Blessing
of an Easter Basket filled with special foods to be shared and
eaten at the Easter Sunday morning meal. Foods that would
be included: hard boiled eggs, butter, cheese, homemade
bread, chocolates, sweet cakes, jam, salt, pepper, beet
horseradish, ham, kielbasa, and etc. are
usually blessed, This is a wonderful way
to start the Easter celebration. Baskets
will be blessed at approximately 12:00
pm Holy Saturday, March 30, 2013, at
St. James Church. All are welcome to
bring their baskets to be blessed. For any
questions please call Pat Colenzo at 7563636 ext. 207.

fácil encontrar a Dios.
domingo tercero). El Dios de Abraham, el Dios de Isaac Y el Dios de Jacob (Primera Lectura del Éxodo 3)... Más la siguiente
semana. Que el Señor los bendiga.
