Vicent Martínez Guzmán is awarded the
IV prize “City of Castellón for Peace”
Due to his recognized work linked to the strengthening of
the Studies in Peace from the education and research, the
city council of Castellón de la Plana awarded the IV prize “City
of Castellón for Peace” to Vicent Martínez Guzmán, honorary
director of the UNESCO Chair of Philosophy for Peace and
member of the Interuniversity Institute of Social Development and Peace (IUDESP).
The presentation of the award will take place next 23rd of
April at 20.00h at the main Theatre of Castellón de la Plana,
in a ceremony including artistic activities and a cocktail party
for the guests.
In accordance with the rules, “the prize has been awarded
due to his highest exemplary nature and to demonstrate in a
reliable way the international importance of his work connected with the development of the Culture for Peace, the peaceful change of conflicts and the cooperation for development.
When the verdict of the jury was known, Martínez Guzmán
received the congratulations of university authorities, colleagues and friends, among them the director of the Universitat
Jaume I, Vicent Climent, through UJI´s Consell de Govern.
in Peace, Conflict and Development Studies which had its
first promotion in 1996. Since its creation, 1000 students
coming from 50 countries of the world have registered and
taken their studies in two languages: English and Spanish.
This recognition is added to other prizes awarded to Martínez Guzmán as for example the Insignia de Oro (1997)
and Hijo Predilecto (2001), both of them given by the city
council of his home town, La Vall d’Uixó. He was also awarded the prize «Memorial Joan XXIII per la pau» (2009) by
the Institut Víctor Seix de Polemologiaand by the Universitat Internacional de la Pau de Catalunya. Lastly, his book
Migraciones, Conflictos y Cultura de paz, co-edited with
Eduardo Sandoval from México and written by scholars
from around the world, received the award «Manuel Castillo» (2010) by the Patronato Sud-Nord of the Universitat
de València.

The trajectory of Vicent Martínez Guzmán stands out for being
the founder of the program of the University Master and PhD
Trajectory
Vicent Martínez Guzmán is the honorary director of the
UNESCO Chair of Philosophy for Peace at the Universitat
Jaume I of Castellón and founder of the University Master
and PhD in Peace, Conflict and Development Studies. He
has realized research works at the Universities of Frankfurt
(Germany) and Berkeley (USA).
He is researching and publishing on Phenomenology, Philosophy of Language and Philosophy for Peace.

José María Tortosa launches a
new publication in Ecuador
The recognized researcher and honorary member of the Interuniversity Institute of Social Development and Peace (IUDESP), José María Tortosa, launched the last 15 of March in the Auditorium of the FLACSO, Quito, his latest
publication “Maldesarrollo y Malvivir. Pobreza y violencia a escala mundial”,
published by Abya Yala of the Salesian Polytechnic University of Quito, Ecuador.
In his book launch, Tortosa carried out an analysis of the internal and interstate relations within an economic crisis context. A setting which, according
with the speaker, is stressed by the poverty increase and the inequality.
In his analysis, Tortosa describes a series of concepts as for example Unsavory, Good Living, and Maldesarrollo (Baddevelopment). Related to the
latter, he pointed out that there is a “class struggle between those who are
up and those who are down” and this struggle is won by the first ones due to
their superior organization, internationalization and globalization. He adds
that the “excessive nationalism” of the second ones ends up dividing their
efforts.
For Tortosa (2011: 31) the “Maldesarrollo is a steady effect (that is, structural) of that class struggle and affects all basic necessities”, the people who
benefit from these structures as well as those condemned to “unsavory”,
that is, those who suffer from the systematic dissatisfactions of their basic
necessities such as the survival, the welfare, the security, the freedom and
the identity.

Trayectoria
José María Tortosa Blasco is an honorary member of the Interuniversity Institute of Social Development and Peace (IUDESP) at the
Universidad de Alicante. He was professor of the Department of
Sociology II from 1991 to 2009, and director of the Interuniversity
Institute of Social Development and Peace between 2006 and 2007.

IUDESP organizes the Conference
on Disarmament and Civil Society
The Interuniversity Institute of Social Development and Peace of
the Universitat Jaume I (UJI) organized the 12th of May in the
postgraduate building lecture hall of the institution from Castellon de la Plana, the I International Conference on Disarmament
Campaigns and Civil Society. Challenges and Future Perspectives.
The aim of this activity was to meditate upon the worldwide militarism and to make visible the work of the civil and social organizations around disarmament.
The introduction to the Conference was in charge of Inmaculada
Fortanet Gómez, vice-chancellor of Cooperation and International Relations at the UJI and of Irene Comins Mingol, director of
the International Master and Doctorate Program in Peace, Conflict and Development Studies. This activity is free and supported
by the Research Promotion Plan 2011 of the Universitat Jaume I.

IUDESP y PYDLOS organize an
encounter on Good Living
The Interuniversity Institute of Social Development and
Peace (IUDESP) and PYDLOS invite the submission of abstracts for its I International Meeting ‘Building the Good Living’ to be held at the University of Cuenca, Ecuador, from
November 9 to 11, 2011. This activity is coordinated by Mª
Dolores Guilló (IUDESP-UA) and Alejandro Guillén (PYDLOS-UC). Its web page is: http://encuentrobuenvivir2011.

The introduction in some Andean constitutions of the concept of Buen Vivir or Good Living (Sumak Kawsay in Ecuadorian Kichwa) or Living Well (Suma Qamaña in Bolivian
Aymara) is a challenge for the Government performance
and calls for the building of a conceptual and methodological framework based on scientific standars. We need to
seek new paths towards a full life, creating opportunities
for full human development (individual and collective),
based on a harmonious relationship with Nature. The Buen
Vivir is another way to raise life to the full social welfare.
The aims of this meeting are:
* To create a platform for discussion of theories, methodologies and practices of the Good Living based on the experience of those working in them.
* To analyze the implications of the Andean proposals
and their possible applications to different contexts.
* To advance in the construction of the Good Living as an
alternative model of well -being, providing a framework
for the design, implementation and evaluation of policies.
‘Building the Buen Vivir’ will revolve around four topics:
1. Advances in the discussion of the BV concepts.
2. Epistemological history of the BV. Recent developments in the measurement of BV. New measurements.
New indicators.
3. The Design and Management of the BV. Design, implementation and evaluation of policies from the standpoint
of the BV.
4. Population and Territory. Management, construction
and occupation of the territory from the perspective of
the BV.
The structure of the meeting consists of plenary lectures given by well-known professionals and parallel sessions (workshops and communications). Proposals for
papers should include summary and work plan, maximum 600 words in total, and should be submitted in
pdf format.
The deadline for submitting proposals is June 30, 2011.
The communication of acceptance will be July 10, 2011.
This activity counts with the support of the Spanish
Agency of International Cooperation for Development
(AECID).
The official language of the Conference will be Spanish,
papers can be submitted and presented either in Spanish or English.

IUDESP researchers debate
on recent publications
The researchers of the Interuniversity Institute of Social Development and Peace of the Universitat Jaume I, Teresa Burgui,
Monte Santolino and Eloísa Nos, launched the last 23 of March
in the lecture hall of the ONG’s Catalan Federation of the city
of Barcelona, the book “Comunicando para la Solidaridad y la
Cooperación. Cómo salir de la encrucijada”.
According to its coordinators, Javier Erro and Teresa Burgui,
this book is “a first previous reflection to what we consider
that it should be the systematization of the experiences and
suggestions arosed in the last years about communication and
solidarity.
The reflections which are being carried out on the communicative models of the Non-Governmental Organizations for
Development, are also relevant. On this matter, Teresa Burgui
mentions that nowadays, some entities are more interested in
the collection of funds than in the understanding and sensitivity of the development structural problems.
In this way, the book carries out a diagnosis of this setting in
order to subsequently raise choice changes. Montse Santolino
points out that this is the result “of a learning which begins in
the South, as a means of understanding and using the communication in order to articulate and cohesion communities
to maintain them informed and to make dialogues and
exchanges easy”.
Lastly, Eloísa Nos states the necessity of the NGODs members to be aware of the cultural consequences of their
speech in their advertising campaigns, acting in concordance with the conduct codes of these organizations.
The book Comunicando para la Solidaridad y la Cooperación. Cómo salir de la encrucijada (2010) was published
by Foro de Comunicación, Educación y Ciudadanía, a space of periodical encounters about the reflection of these
topics, whose third and latest version was carried out in
2010 in Córdoba.
This publication has two parts: the first one is entitled
“Epistemological Bases to educate in a culture for solidarity”. Here write Joaquín García Roca, Irene Comins Mingol, Rosa María Alfaro, Mari Luz Ortega Carpio and Joan
Férres i Prats.
The second part is entitled “Communicating “from” the
education when we refer to the Third Sector, to the NGOD
and to Development”. Eloísa Nos Aldás, Teresa Burgui Jurío, Manuela Mesa Peinado, Montse Santolino Prieto and
Carlos Ballesteros participate in this part.

Master and PhD students participate
in the Congress on Peace and Culture

40 students coming from 20 countries different to the University Master and PhD in Peace, Conflict and Development
Studies of the Universitat Jaume I, participated in the XXI International Congress on Culture and Peace of Gernika.
This congress entitled “(Im)-perfect justice and peace building. New theories and practices about the approach to human rights and abilities”, was carried out on the 18th and 19th
of April in Gernika-Lumo, the Basque Country.
The themes dealt during the congress are related to comparative justice,to the recognition and love as personal abilities
or as a study of human needs. Moreover, practices of nonviolent social resistance will be approached in controversial
contexts and in their focus towards human development and
positive peace. This pretends to invite to reflection and to give
continuity to the previous congresses proposals.
Among the researchers participating are Vicent Martínez Guzmán, honorary director of the UNESCO Chair of Philosophy for
Peace and member of the IUDESP, who carried out the conference entitled “Imperfect justices and abilities to make peace”.
The academic proposals are developed by the UNESCO
Chair of Philosophy for Peace at the Universitat Jaume I,
the conferences “Not a single life more for Toga” of the
Faculty of Law by Eugenio María de Hostos from Puerto
Rico, Gernika Gogoratuz and by Bak-Ehu, an interdisciplinary group of art and culture from the Universidad del
País
Vasco.
The XXI Congress on Culture and Peace is framed in the
commemorative acts of the 74th anniversary of the Gernika bombardment which receive the collaboration of
Gernika’s Museum of Peace and of Gernika-Lumo town
council.
Adjacent to the attendance to this event, Master and PhD
students had the opportunity to visit the Museum Euskal
Herria and Gernika Museum of Peace as well as the opportunity to visit the cities of Bermeo and San Sebastian
where they got to know more about the region’s cultural
expressions.
