What are you doing this weekend?
It’s a simple enough question: “What are you doing this weekend?” We probably say it or hear it every
week. But does it really sink in, the amazing thing that we Catholics get to do every weekend? We get
to meet the living Jesus—in the flesh. Sometimes we might think, “Oh, if only Christ appeared in
person. Then great crowds would gather around him again, just like in the old days.” Well, don’t forget
that great crowds crucified him in the old days. And yet here he is, in person, the same Jesus Christ in
your days. He cries out, “This is me. This is my Body, this is my Blood.” And he waits for crowds of
friends and family to gather around him here and now. He’s just counting on you to bring them.
It all starts with that simple question, so make sure you ask it. We should ask our friends and family, “What are you
doing this weekend?” Then we listen and let them share. Then we share our plans, too. This mutual exchange helps to
grow our friendship with those around us. So be simple and natural and share your plans: “I’m going to watch the Cubs
lose. And I’m going to 10am Mass at St. Matthew’s.” That’s just an example; you share your own plans. And while
that’s a good example; we can do better. “I going to watch the Cubs win. Then I’m going to meet Christ at Mass.” That’s
very different, isn’t it? Mass isn’t just another thing on our list for the weekend. It is our weekly meeting with Christ in
person. Just to say it that way—with Jesus in the middle—that changes us on the inside. You’ll notice it will have an
effect on those around you, too.
Sometimes they’ll answer back, “You can talk to God anywhere.” This sometimes feels like we’ve entered a debate, and
we might be worried that we’re not equipped to handle the fight. Well, there’s no need to fight: simply agree. “You’re
right. You can talk to God anywhere. Even here. Let’s talk to him now. Is there anything you want to pray for?” If they
answer, ‘no,’ then say, “Well, could you pray for me?” If they’re open to it, you might even pray the Our Father
together.
They’ll probably smile at your response. Your friendship will grow. And later on, or the next week, you’ll share your
plans again. Many times our plans are the same: watching sports, getting together for dinner. So it’s no surprise that our
weekend plans with Christ repeat themselves, too. When you pick up this habit, one day the Holy Spirit will nudge you
not only to share your plans, but to invite your friend to Mass, too. “I’m going to noon Mass at St. Matthew. Do you
want to come?” And probably much later, they’ll come along for the ride.
Everyone in the parish can easily set the goal of sharing their weekend plans with two people every week. This is
not something your pastor is asking you to do. Christ himself is counting on you to share your faith. The life of our
Catholic Christian faith in Glendale Heights depends on you fulfilling this mission, a mission given to you by Christ
himself. If we share our faith, it will grow; and so will our parish grow and our village grow. If we do not share our faith,
our own faith will weaken and possibly die here and even within you. I’m sure you’ve all read in the paper about closing
parishes in the city of Chicago. Parishes close when the faith does not grow. We have a wonderful, stable parish. Christ
is calling you to make St. Matthew vibrant! I am showing you a simple way: each week every parishioner should share
his or her weekend plans with two people; and those plans include the living Jesus. You simply need to be a good friend
and ask the question. Our Lord will do the rest. Let’s all pick up this habit of sharing our weekend plans and our faith.
It is Christ who calls out to you and me. He says, “Hey, what are we doing this weekend? When are you coming to see
me? Who are you bringing?”
Who knew Sunday Mass was so exciting? We only need the eyes of faith to see it.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONTINUING
GENEROSITY TO OUR CAMPAIGN.
YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS MAKE THESE
REPAIRS AND IMPROVEMENTS POSSIBLE.
My dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
“Mercy Changes the World!”
On World Mission Sunday, October 23, Pope Francis invites
each of us to be part of that change for our world of great need,
calls us to announce the mercy of God, “the beating heart of
the Gospel” (Misericordiae Vultus, 12).
On this 90th World Mission Sunday, our diocesan family joins
our brothers and sisters around the world who will gather at the
Lord’s Table to celebrate, with great joy, our common vocation
as missionaries. Our prayers and financial help, through the
Society for the Propagation of the Faith, support the work of
the Mission Church, its witness to Christ and service to the
poor.
“Let us not close our hearts within our own particular
concerns, but let us open them to all of humanity.”
Message for World Mission Sunday, 2016
I echo these words of our Holy Father, asking you to open your
hearts as you connect on World Mission Sunday with every
corner of the globe… with the Americas, where catechists
travel to remote areas to bring the Good News of God’s great
love to families; with Europe, where new churches are built to
welcome faith communities, renewed after years of
persecution; with Asia, where six million children receive an
education from Religious Sisters in some 16,000 Church-run
elementary schools; with the Pacific Islands, where 1,000
young men are preparing for the priesthood, to bring the Lord’s
healing hope and peace to those in need; with Africa, where
those who are sick are provided with loving care at 6,400
Catholic hospitals and small clinics.
And don’t forget the corners of the globe where the Diocese of
Joliet serves. Your support helps us to continue our missionary
work in the Philippines, in Bolivia, in Africa and in the Navajo
nation. Each year hundreds of adults and young people donate
two weeks of their time and talent to connect with other people
in diverse cultures and live their vocation as missionary
disciples.
Grateful always for your generosity of spirit and heart, and
confident of your missionary commitment to share the joy of
the Gospel and help the poor, I pray for blessings for you and
your families!
Faithfully yours in the Lord,
Most Reverend R. Daniel Conlon
Bishop of Joliet

(18:8). ¡Responderemos sí, y además misericordia!
