Parents What Helps Teens make Healthy Decisions about Sex? ♦ A close relationship with parents and family ♦ Feeling connected to their school ♦ Parents are clear they do not want their teenage children to have sex ♦ Feeling they have a positive future and lots to offer their community ♦ Learning about both abstinence and contraception Have the Power ! What Parents Can Do Show them you care • Close relationships with parents protect teens Talk to your kids about sex • Talking is important for boys as well as girls • Be clear that you do not want them to have sex—and why • Tell them teens who have sex must use condoms and birth control Supervise your teenage children 5 STEPS for TALKING 1. Bring up the subject 2. Find out what your child thinks 3. Give clear messages 4. Let your child know WHY you care 5. “Keep the door open” for more talking • Know where they are going and what they are doing • Get to know their friends and their school • Protect your children from sexual pressure and abuse Answering Qustions → → → → → Validate the question and the questioner: “That’s a good question” Understand what your child is asking: “Help me understand better what you are asking” Answer the question with facts Offer to find out if you don’t know the answer You don’t have to tell about yourself • Too much supervision can backfire Help them choose activities that will protect them • Discourage dating older partners • Discourage working more than 20 hours a week • Encourage girls to participate in sports REMEMBER: → It’s not just one “Talk” → Don’t just talk.
